A culmination of Janky Gunplay, horrible keybinds, and bad balancing

very fun with friends, add a lot of lives per round so that everyone can play the whole round
fun for fighting family and friends
UpGun is a free multiplayer FPS where I fight through short deathmatch rounds and get to choose a new skill after each round. That upgrade system is what makes it different from a normal arena shooter. Instead of every round feeling exactly the same, I can slowly build a completely ridiculous loadout depending on what skills I pick. The upgrade system is easily my favourite part. There are more than 50 skills, ranging from simple health increases to things like explosive bullets and grenades that can spawn more grenades. I can build around a particular playstyle or pick upgrades that are meant to counter what is happening in the match. Some combinations can get pretty silly, which is a big part of the fun. The actual shooting is simple but feels good enough for the kind of game this is. The matches are fast and I do not have to spend ages waiting around before getting back into the action. The different maps also have their own layouts and can make certain abilities more useful, so I cannot always rely on exactly the same setup. I also like the robot characters and the amount of cosmetic stuff. There are more than 200 cosmetics and hats to collect, so I can make my character look completely different without changing the actual gameplay. The colourful cartoon style fits the game nicely and stops the whole thing from taking itself too seriously. The biggest problem for me is that the experience can become repetitive. The shooting itself is fairly basic, and once I have tried a lot of the upgrades, the main reason to keep playing is experimenting with different builds. That can be really fun for a while, but I eventually start wanting more maps or different ways to play. The free version is also a little limited compared with the full game. I can play for free and get access to three maps and 50 upgrades, but the full version adds more skills, maps and other features. I appreciate that the free version is still a proper playable game, although the difference between the versions is noticeable. I also think the upgrade system can sometimes create some ridiculous situations that feel more chaotic than tactical. That is fun when everything comes together, but it can also mean I get killed by a combination that I did not really have a chance to understand or counter. I like the idea of adapting each round, but balance can feel a little messy when several upgrades start stacking together. Overall, UpGun is a fun little FPS with a genuinely good idea behind its progression. I like getting a new skill every round and seeing how far I can push a particular build, and the simple shooting makes it easy to jump into. It can get repetitive and the free version leaves some content locked away, but there is enough creativity in the upgrade system to make it worth trying. Rating: 7.4/10
