United Penguin Kingdom: Huddle up is a cute little city builder that surprised me with how much management is actually packed into the penguin theme. I am building a settlement on the ice, looking after my penguins and trying to turn a small village into something much bigger. The basic idea is easy to understand, but I quickly have to start thinking about food, materials, energy, housing and the happiness of the penguins living in my settlement. I like that the game does not take itself too seriously while still giving me enough things to manage to make building the colony feel worthwhile.
The part I enjoy most is watching the settlement gradually come together. I can build workplaces that produce food, materials and medicine, while energy generators allow me to support more buildings. Housing is not enough on its own either because the penguins need entertainment, education, spirituality and other things to stay happy. I can build schools, libraries, cinemas, ice rinks, gyms, shrines and other facilities, so I am constantly making decisions about what my settlement needs next. The penguins moving around and using the things I build also makes the town feel much more alive than an empty collection of buildings.
There is a nice economic side to it as well. I have to be careful with gold, find ways to produce useful resources and sometimes trade or barter to get things that I cannot easily produce myself. Selling products gives me another way to bring in money, while the settlement reputation system gives me a reason to keep improving the overall quality of the colony. I like that progression is not just about making the settlement bigger. I have to make it better too, and reaching higher levels eventually lets me expand my kingdom and make decisions about new settlements.
The survival side gives me something else to worry about. Killer whales can attack buildings, while thief seals try to steal food from my storage, so I cannot simply build a peaceful little penguin town and forget about defending it. Defense towers give me a way to protect the settlement, although I think the threats could have been a little more varied. I enjoy having some pressure on the economy because it stops the game from becoming completely passive, but the attacks are not so demanding that they take over the whole city building experience.
The biggest weakness for me is the free version being limited to one year of in game time. That is enough for me to get a proper taste of the systems and build a decent settlement, but I can definitely feel the point where I am reaching the end of what this version is meant to offer. It is basically an introduction to the larger United Penguin Kingdom rather than the complete experience. I think that is fair for a free version, but it does affect how much I can rate it because I am judging the amount of content I can actually play here.
I also think some of the management systems could have more depth. There are plenty of buildings and needs to keep me busy, but after I understand how the basic economy works, the decisions become fairly predictable. The cute presentation does a lot of the heavy lifting, and I genuinely like watching the penguins go about their routines, but I would have liked more surprises and more complicated problems as the settlement developed. Even so, I appreciate how clearly everything is presented. I can usually tell what my penguins need and what I need to build to fix the problem.
Overall, United Penguin Kingdom: Huddle up is a charming city builder that gives me a good amount to manage without becoming overly complicated. I like building the settlement, balancing resources, keeping the penguins happy, dealing with seals and killer whales and gradually improving the colony. The biggest issue is the limited one year time span in this free version, along with the fact that some systems do not become as deep as I would have liked. Still, the penguin theme gives it plenty of personality and the core city building is genuinely enjoyable. For a free introduction to the series, I think it does a good job showing what the full game is about.
