Undertale is a game i only started liking in retrospect, i had bought the game years prior on a steam sale because, well its Undertale its just one of those games you buy cause you know its good. I had seen a playthrough of the neutral route of the game and knew the some of the other big stuff that most people online know, but there were key story elements i did not know and had never seen. after u bought the game i played a tiny bit, got past the opening part of the game, but was just never motivated to keep making progress. until the other week one of my friends asked me to play through the game because he wanted to see me play Deltarune but he wanted me to play Undertale first. so i played through the game not really seeing too much of the appeal at first but wanting to push through so we can get to the game he actually wanted me to see, playing through the game can be tricky because it is hard to see the appeal of the game at first, the actual gameplay is honestly pretty bland, and so when i was going through the game i just felt as if it was a slog, near the end of the game though the tone shifted in a way i didn't expect, without getting into spoilers because this is still a review, the games vibe the whole rest of the game has been very cheery and unserious, so once the story started getting intense it really took me off balance. suddenly one day i had the chance to just knock out the true ending so i decided to just go for it, this is the part where the story really started to show its face, every aspect was super well done in the area leading up to the true final boss and i had somehow not known anything about that whole part of the game or the true ending. so once the story gripped me at the very end i went to beat the true final boss which the ending of that fight is genuinely so heart breaking, its one of my favorite moments in any game period it genuinely had such an impact on me. once i beat the game for the first time i spend the next 2 days just thinking about it, i couldn't get the game or its ending out of my head, so i decided to buy the game on switch so i could replay it while having it on a different platform. and that time i understood the game. i still think the gameplay is probably this games weakest element, however what i had completely not understood the first time was how good every other aspect of this game is. the world is so well crafted, i found myself looking at every little detail wanting to know what it was about, wanting to see if it was important or see its place in the world. the music was so good it is easily in my top 3 game soundtracks of all time and its probably only that low because the other 2 games i am super bias towards, but i would often be motivated to progress just so i could hear the next boss song or area theme. the characters were super well written which i didn't expect and its easy to miss too because all of the dialogue is so ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ funny, reading the lines in this game will genuinely make my day better which i found shocking because even in my top games ever i would find myself skipping at least some dialogue but here, i didn't skip any, i went out of my way to read more. which the other thing i could do when replaying the game was fully appreciate the games story from the start, and it is indescribable honestly, again im not gonna spoil what happens in a review but the games story is such a nice change of pace from other games, because its simple, its simple but its incredibly deep. once i beat the game i could not play other games because i would open one and if would feel wrong, the story would by comparison be complex and shallow. even if i hear an ending to a game that tries to be as cinematic as possible it just wouldn't work for me. because even in my second playthrough knowing what's coming i would still feel myself starting to cry and my heart starting to shatter, while watching an ending i have seen before not even a week ago. if your sitting on this game, as long as you go in with the right expectations its something i would call lifechanging with no exaggeration. 10/10 game, broke my top 10 games as soon as i beat it and might have even broke my top 5, please don't sleep on this.
holy 10/10 game spent my whole time exploring and doing the pacifist route.
