If you have just the right expectations and are willing to fully commit to learning U-boat warfare, this game is for you. This is a sink tub game for sink tub enthusiasts. It gets better the more you put into it. It's best with higher realism settings, those settings make the game overwhelming. I highly recommend save scumming encounters. Practice on the same ship over and over until you start getting better before you try a serious campaign. It's faster then trying to intercept ships each time while learning. Go to Bergen on your first patrol and practice on the docked freighters there. Type II and Type IX Uboats are hard mode choices. Type II's have few torpedo tubes and only a short time submerged. Type IX dive slowly are easy to detect. Type VII and early war are where you should start. Highly recommend a manual transit of the Kiel canal. Never take returning to port for granted.
Poorly designed interface with overlapping and contradictory layers that is utterly counterintuitive. That isn't a good start. Then you hit the bugs. Dear Lord, the bugs... I bought this game when it came out and it wasn't very good. I thought, "Well, it's undercooked. I'll give it some time." I came back to it four years (!) later, and it's still a janky, directionless, frustrating mess. Just go play the modded versions of any of the SH titles and you'll have a far better experience.
First of all, THIS IS A GOOD GAME! But because steam only allows yes or no, I need to make it negative for now. The game is bit "arcadey" if you are coming from the silent hunter world, and that might bother you for a while. But that passes and the simulation is quite good. If you are into WW2 subsims, this game is an easy yes. But what makes it thumbs down for now? THE BUGS! UI dissapears and you need to restart, buttons wont do anything, stuttering and clanking. I've read that it was worse before, so I guess the devs are working on it. I will keep playing and will change to thumbs up when the bugs are fixed.
I wanted to like it so much, but the problem is when it works, it works. But when it glitches or a bug hits you mid fight in the Atlantic and your save becomes corrupted now I have to start over AGAIN for the 4th time. I was sitting in a port, accepted a mine laying mission, then went to unload torpedo to swap for mines. Yeah the whole game broke, I cant unload torpedo, i went to the quartermaster and he wont even let me look at the warehouse, I cant see my sub anymore in port its just a blue screen that looks like im under water. When I loaded an earlier save I went to leave port, and I used the world map to naviate out, well guess what, my sub disappeared from the screen and I couldnt access any menus or do anything, i couldnt slow time, i couldnt move crew, it just bugged out, I have been holding off on this review until I had more game time but at this rate I have had to re-load the game 3-5 times in a few hour session is insane, ive had to start a new save TWICE in a week, TWICE. Man they just cant fix the bugs in this game for me to even finish the campaign. Id check out Naval War: Sea battle instead.
Can't even finish the tutorial due to the bugs. How is this considered a finished product?
It's June 2026 and the game is still ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. The dev or the devs (there's only a handful I believe) should have fixed the game first before selling out and making that dlc. Even the mods are not enough. The chance of having a game breaking bug somewhere is about 99%. Oh, and let's not forget to mention that the type IX stats are exactly the same as type VII :DDD. UBOAT is the black sheep of the subsim genre. Such a shame..
I assumed the reviews were overstating the crashing issue, but after a 4 hour install I literally could not finish the tutorial. On mission 3 of the tutorial it'd hard crash my game every time and reset all my settings. Happened 6 times so I'm refunding this trash
