This was a good game, one of the greatest puzzles in gaming at the end
Tunic is a Zelda-like game. Except not really, it LOOKS like Zelda but deep down the core of the game lies in solving puzzles, which I personally loved. This game is a very mixed experience of being so peak at times, and then being so awful it made me want to just uninstall. Spoiler-free review, will just mention stuff but without going deep on them.
The world
This game is presented as a 3D environment world, to which I can only say wow. Some parts of the game are really stunning visually, and it also gave me some motivation to keep on exploring. The camera is semi-fixed so your angle may have some blind spots, being able to create neat hidden shortcuts at times. There is bare to none story told to you, the player. In fact, the little dialog options you might get is in a foreign language that you are unable to understand if you just started playing it. As for me, I love the "bare story thrown at you, just discover on your own" settings, so I'm biased here. But damn, it fits so well. The only piece of lore you can get that is somewhat understandable is through the manual, which is another great detail. You collect pages of it through the entire world, and sometimes you can get for example the map of a section or tutorial parts like the controls. In fact, it's through here that you can learn extra "hidden" details like additional mechanics you might not know at first but they do in fact exist. In short: the manual is amazing and is one of the best parts of the game, even more when you open it and see that your "screen" looks like a normal monitor screen.
The combat
So this is sadly where the game sucks, and so much that I almost ragequitted. In fact, I do appreciate that the devs added the "invincibility" option, because while it removes the difficulty by a lot it's just not a fun combat system. To start with, you have no idea what you items do unless you use them or somehow know how to read the language. Even the manual only displays the icons and if there's any kind of explanation, well, you guessed it. I feel like by this I underused by tools, I've only used like 3 items at most that are not equippable ones. They also, at least for me, don't feel like a major advantage so I just stick with the sword swing. You have one whole weapon for the entire game, and that is the sword. Your main source of damage, even if you get magical weapons midway. Sucks that you can't really upgrade it in any way, and the most you can do is enhancing your stats for which I appreciate that the manual tells you roughly what do you need to beat the first boss. Other combat inputs are shielding (once you get it) and rolling, plus parrying but I don't think I ever had that happening. As to why it sucks, it's simple: bosses are a constant fight against the own controller. Words can't put how much I HATED fighting the second boss, the one in the vault (and before I enabled invincibility mode). Not only I had to track it down, but since it spawned minions and it had 2 hit locations my focus mode kept on moving and locking on another enemy. Please, PLEASE, why can't the focus mode be LOCKED onto an enemy? It's just extra difficulty that's not necessary at all. I had lost boss fight runs due to the camera going crazy since, guess what, movement is tied to the direction you are facing. I can take skill issue against a boss if I just can't match the required amount of skill it demands me, but this time it's just a matter of the bosses being incredible tanky, which is fair and makes the fight last for a loooong while, and the player having to fight not just against the boss but also against the controls themselves.
Part 2 of the game: puzzle hunting!
Most of the first half up to the credits scene was just going through different zones, beating some enemies and gather items to unlock the final boss. Upon going back to the save file, I started to spend some time to gather what remained of the game which also serves to unlock the "true" ending. And wow, it's really fun! Doing puzzles, decrypting them and all of that is probably the best part of the game. The game manual gives you some hints as to where to head or do, and for the stuff I've done so far it was incredible enjoyable.
Do I recommend this game?
I find myself in a weird spot because on one hand the combat really made me despise the game, but on the other hand it has so many good points it feels like a waste to not recommend it. If I were to recommend it, though, I would advise to turn on the "cheat mode" because really, it was THAT bad. Tunic is an awesome game with lots of secrets, epic presentation and sadly a lackluster combat side. If you love taking notes, this game is probably for you!
de los mejores juegos indies que he probado, visualmente hermoso y con una jugabilidad sencilla
The amount of thought and creativity that went into this game is astounding. Even just a normal playthrough, totally oblivious to any of the many secrets, is enjoyable enough to recommend wholeheartedly.
puzzles, action and foxes, perfect
An incredibly fun game about learning about how the world works and how to fight and travel using that knowledge
