Best game in the series right after NMH1.
I think the black sheep of the series is my favorite one. Unfortunately, the visual style of the first two games is lost in the move to UE4, but Travis Touchdown is still Travis Touchdown. The music in this one is excellent. This game gives Travis some much needed characterization in the visual novel sections (which were the highlights for me personally). Suda got meta and pulled in characters from all his other games in a way that was quite fun. There's 8 main levels of top down, super basic hack and slash gameplay. The levels were widely creative and varied in the what they set out to do, but not all of them were winners. The Coffee and Donuts (awful platforming and too much backtracking), CIA (too long and the combat really wore thin at this point), and Killer Marathon (so many traps and gank squads) levels were all unpleasant to trudge through. I like a vast majority of the bosses (with the exception of the Coffee and Donuts one because that half-hearted side-scroller camera perspective is truly atrocious). Sadly, the combat is the weakest part. The hack and slash gameplay needed a few additional mechanics and hooks to really make it feel like more than a means to an end. It's just far too simplistic and wears thin well before the credits roll. Enemies were cookie cutter and there wasn't nearly enough variety. This was clearly a deeply personal game for Suda, and while relatively flawed, it was a damn good time.

Great if you're a fan of Suda 51's other work. The soundtrack was great. The gameplay was quite simplistic with damage sponge enemies and levels that overstayed their welcome. If you haven't played a lot of the other games in the overall franchise a lot of this game will NOT make sense at all. I liked it and I think it was worth its playthrough. Though if you wanted more "No More Heroes" gameplay this one is more like a spin off that takes place before 3 and explains a lot of the missing context in 3.
its not no more heroes but at the same time its no more heroes
Suda51 becomes broke and homeless after making the atrocity that is NMH2 and then wakes up in a cold sweat one night realizing that he can make good games and TSA is created. Definitely not an amazing game , given the generally mediocre level design and enemy types that range from nothing more than screen pollution to worse than some bosses, but at least characters and settings are fun unlike NMH2. I really wish Badman got more time to shine, but I understand the limitations this game faced with it's budget and all really hurt the chances of that. If you're a NMH/Suda51 fan and are thinking of skipping TSA for any reason, I would heavily advise against it. It's absolutely worth playing, and unlike NMH2, it has significance to the overall plot of the series. The issues I have with it aren't THAT bad either, I just couldn't bring myself to play more than 1 level a day with how drawn out some can be. Especially the first few and the final base game level. God I hate CIA.

its peak
Suda games are almost always 10/10 in style and rough gameplay and that's generally still the case. It's got co-op and it's intentionally more simplistic. The game is infinitely more enjoyable with better skills -- the dash feels almost mandatory. I never took it off. Must have been doing something very well for me to 100%
Sorry, Goichi Suda, i admire your work and everything, but i paid for a No More Heroes game, not to hear (well, read) you vent about your frustrations with the creative, development, and corporate sides of the gaming industry, even if said critiques are well founded. This game is basically Suda51's therapy session regarding his long experience in the industry and ends up being more about him than Travis. What the game adds to the actual NMH story and the references to Suda51's previous works are actually decent, but you have to put up with the worst gameplay in the series by far and a lot of unnecessary narrative fluff to experience that. I recommend this game exclusively to people who really love the series and want to enter No More Heroes 3 as prepared as possible after playing 1 and 2. However, if i have to judge it as a game on its own, it is definitely a thumbs down, as much as it pains me to leave a negative review for a game from this series.
This is definitely going down as one of my favorite games I've ever experienced. I don't need to justify myself this is beyond peak, please write more visual novel Suda.
