Tokyo Underground Killer takes elements of Doom and Shadow Warrior and blends them into a slick and stylish action slasher. Combat can take some getting used to, with guns being tricky to aim on the fly, but the sword and blood-arts are the star of the show. Each level feels different and challenges / tools ramp up as you play. Bosses are serviceable, but just cutting through waves of enemies is where things really shine. It has elements of countering and perfect dodging, but you might also end up just swinging wildly as everything catches fire. The plot and characters are fun and interesting, and the use of lights and simple touches really shine out to give even shops, levels and even your apartment a distinct feel. An absolute gem if you want an anime action slasher or wish Killer 7 just let you cut loose and start chopping!
Saw the trailer, played the demo, bought the game, did not regret it! The music pumps, the action is fast and the art style and atmosphere reminded me in a positive way of Killer is Dead. Besides the main missions, there are also additional arcade missions, lots of things to collect and mini games to play. Some small bugs, but nothing game breaking (In one case, had to reload a boss fight). To be honest, I don't get the low price they ask for this game ...

Very fun, fast-paced first-person combat game. Once I got into it I honestly had a hard time to stop playing. I had played the demo a couple months back, and had found it very difficult but I'm happy to say that the full game seems well balanced. It's not perfect optimization-wise though. Watch out for heavy framedrops when you're surrounded with too many enemies and killing them left and right. And there's a part of a mission near the end of the game that had my system going full-throttle on cooling for some reason. As a hired assassin, you take on missions where you run through some vivid neon lit depictions of famous Tokyo districts at night while killing hundreds of enemies, in order to kill a designated boss target. The story is told through very cool interactive comic strip sequences, with fully voiced dialogue lines. After completing a mission, you start again from your apartment, and must pay a bribe to the subway ladies to be able to do the next one. Money can be earned either in missions, or by playing mini-games in town after exiting your apartment (part-time bouncer, pachinko, arcade VR missions, ...). The fact that you can relax a bit right after a mission helped with immersion and kept me playing. What I liked: - Very fun, dynamic and juicy combat. Once you get the hang of it, you can chain enemies and it is very satisfying. On that aspect, the game having you incarnate a blood-trance-driven assassin works perfectly. - I recommend taking on the VR missions at the arcade, going from the very easy ones to the harder ones in order to nicely ramp up the difficulty while you get comfortable with the gameplay mechanics. That way you'll be ready when the game gets difficult, and difficult it does become! - There are many ways to approach a situation. Melee sword combat is central to the gameplay, but you can play either defensively by relying on parry/counters or very aggressively by tanking a bit of damage and refilling your health with the blood enemies drop when they die. You have powerful supernatural blood abilities to unleash whenever they are charged, and you can also pick up range weapons, but they have little ammo so they're more like another tool to help you out of a tough spot or make short work of a very annoying kind of enemy (like those flying pests). - Tokyo by night is beautiful in this game. Over-the-top colors everywhere, reflective materials, and good environmental story-telling with lots of details to look at. It feels lived in, a lot of care has been put into the design of the different locations. I loved looking at all the hand-drawn pieces of art used as ads everywhere. - All characters have very quirky designs, and the way the story was written felt reminiscent of reading a manga or watching an anime that does not take itself seriously and just wants to show you cool stuff. What I disliked: - I wish side-characters would have been modeled in 3D instead of showing up as billboards when encountered in locations - most of the time you only realize you've found somebody because a dialogue UI shows up. Then again I assume it's more a budget/time issue than an artistic choice. - Although it did not bother me that much personally as I enjoyed doing arcade VR missions, I feel like the game should not force you to play intermission minigames if you're not into it. If you want to collect figurines and stuff, fine. But here, transportation is more expensive the more progress you make and you'll eventually have to grind, especially if you want to upgrade your blood abilities. If you're looking for an intense fast-paced FPS game with cool visuals, you'll likely enjoy this one. It's also damn cheap, so you don't have to wait for a sale to grab it!
Really solid game. Like Shadow Warrior meets Doom. Can get repetitive but it's a fun gameplay loop that doesn't break the bank.
The other reviews on here weren't joking. Tokyo Underground Killer is like someone asked Suda51 to make a FPS. And it's awesome! The characters are crazy and the levels punch you in the face with neon and big Japanese signs everywhere. Combat feels solid and very fast. It's all about moving forward, stabbing, dodging and more stabbing. That can become somewhat repetitive over time, but tbf it makes up for it with the different blood skills and new upgrades for the katana. There's also a lot of bosses and they all have different backstories and strategies. There's one boss that appears three times that I could have done without, though at least they changed her attacks each time. I enjoyed my time with this and recommend it if you are looking for a crazy hack-and-slasher that has maybe more in common with Grasshopper action than New Blood shooters.

Fix the optimization pls.
