The Wolf of Derevnya

Lovely game. Liked it a lot. Would love to explore a bit more of it at a later date to explore the new paths as I feel there's more to the story besides what I caught from that first playthrough I did.

I first came across [i]The Wolf of Derevnya[/i] during Spooktober Jam on itch.io last year. Even though only one chapter was available then, I was already fully drawn into the story. What I like most about the game is the writing -- it is evocative and haunting, and the art style and music used in the game are perfect accompaniments to it, making the game an extremely immersive experience overall. I really enjoyed Zvezdana's little riddles and her character as well. Even though it took me a while to decipher her lines, I got used to her way of speaking as I got further into the game, and found her words extremely poetic and beautiful. Be prepared to run around A LOT if you are no good with directions (like me), but the game does a good job of helping to steer you back onto the right path. There is a realism to the story of the game that is not for the faint of heart, and the ending is quite sobering. I remained hopeful and optimistic till the end, and I was heartbroken by the turn of events and misplaced trust. The game really reminds me of [i]The Village[/i] by M. Night Shyamalan. Even though I am usually no good with such genres, it was truly a worthwhile experience. All in all I'd say the game makes a perfect read for the Halloween season, when it is cold (if you are in the Northern Hemisphere) and quiet outside! And it is best accompanied by a cup of hot cocoa! *EDITED* Misspelt Zvezdana's name!!

Great atmosphere and well written tension, with just the right pace of background lore being slowly revealed. The choices generally felt reasonable and responsive, which makes me curious how much things branch, since it felt like I did make some significant choices.

A nice little visual novel full of atmosphere and tension (the subtle music and sound effects really compliment the writing here), complete with twist ending that felt right and I probably should have seen coming.
