This game isn't for those who want to experience hope
and happy endings.
It's a tragic, beautiful, and heartwrenching story about The Creature and honestly? I was a big fan of it, even if I cried rivers while playing. I understand why the story goes on like this, I did, but it still kicked me in the feels every single time. The soundtrack, I think, is what continues to bring me back to this game. It's beautiful, capturing, and so beautiful. I do agree that some puzzles make so sense and are too vague, which disrupted by experiences quite a bit when I was replaying it to see different endings, but otherwise? It was an enjoyable casual game for 1-2 runs. It does stay with me to this day.
“Midway upon the journey of our life I found myself within a forest dark, For the straightforward pathway had been lost.”

A New Lens on a Classic Myth
It is hard to find a better opening for The Wanderer: Frankenstein's Creature. Playing as the creature, you awaken lost in a world where you must rediscover your essence and find where you belong. But what is scarier: finding yourself lost, or rejected? Mary Shelley’s classic has seen countless interpretations, yet this artful, watercolour point-and-click game feels remarkably relevant and deeply resonates with the player. Your decisions directly influence the creature’s fate, forcing you to reimagine the story of a monster on a much more personal level.
Atmosphere & Gameplay
The atmosphere is deeply immersive, with music that sets the mood perfectly throughout the journey. As the story unfolds, you solve light puzzles and interact with the inhabitants. However, make sure to explore thoroughly, as subtle choices and interactions quietly alter the final outcome.

Fair Warnings & Considerations

Branching Endings: Initially, I felt a slight sense of disappointment upon reaching the credits, having arrived at an entirely unintended outcome. However, it may well be designed this way to reflect the harsh, cruel nature of the world. If you are particularly sensitive to choice-driven narratives with unyielding consequences, this might be a game to approach with caution.
Darker Themes: Frankenstein’s Creature touches on darker themes and elements of violence. Do not be deceived by its colourful promotional art featuring a deer on a bright green meadow — you will find yourself navigating graveyards among the dead as well.
Language Threshold: Given its narrative-driven nature, language comprehension is vital. If you plan to play in English (which features a beautiful font) as a non-native speaker, I recommend having a CEFR C1 Advanced level or higher. The game uses sophisticated, nuanced vocabulary essential for making choices and ensuring you don't miss crucial story beats.

Final Verdict
Ultimately, it’s a worthy little game where I spent 7 hours over 3 days. I am not sure if I want to chase a different — and hopefully better — ending, but I am certainly curious... and I hope you will be, too.
"Does not love see beyond appearances?" This game was not even on my radar; I saw a friend purchased it on my Steam's activity feed. I loved how it looked, with its watercolor-ish visuals. Plus, it was discounted to 90% off. So, why not? It started off oh-so-slow-that-I-wanted-to-giveup, but the story picked up in the second half. I wished there was a button to speed up the movements, especially for a fast reader. + Absolutely adored the way the game looked + Loved the story and choices, especially the Carnival part.
(It was a glimmer of hope that bro finally had a chance at happiness, but alas!)
+ Enjoyed the soundtrack + Loved the unapologetic ending - Some puzzles were too vague - OMG TOO SLOW It was good for a one-time playthrough for those curious about the story. I don't think I'd be back for another to get a different ending. My rating: 7/10

The Wanderer: Frankenstein’s Creature is a narrative-driven adventure developed by La Belle Games in collaboration with ARTE France and published by ARTE France. Rather than retelling Mary Shelley’s famous novel from the perspective of the scientist Victor Frankenstein, the game places players directly in the role of the creature itself. This shift in perspective transforms the familiar story into a reflective and emotional journey about identity, discovery, and rejection. Instead of focusing on horror or action, the game emphasizes introspection and empathy, presenting the creature not as a monster but as a newly born being struggling to understand the world and its place within it. The story begins shortly after the creature’s creation, with the protagonist awakening in an unfamiliar world. At first, the environment is almost empty and colorless, symbolizing the creature’s lack of knowledge and perception. As the player begins to explore and interact with the surroundings, the environment gradually fills with color and detail, representing the creature’s expanding awareness. This visual transformation becomes one of the game’s most powerful storytelling tools, illustrating the character’s emotional and intellectual growth without relying heavily on dialogue or exposition. Through wandering forests, mountains, villages, and isolated landscapes, the creature slowly learns about nature, human behavior, and the complicated emotions that define existence. The narrative structure focuses on a series of encounters and experiences that shape the creature’s understanding of humanity. Along the journey, the protagonist observes people from a distance, listens to conversations, and occasionally interacts with individuals who respond with curiosity, kindness, or fear. These moments gradually form the foundation of the creature’s developing personality. The game frequently presents players with choices that influence how the creature reacts to the world—whether it responds with compassion, curiosity, anger, or despair. These decisions ultimately shape the direction of the narrative and determine which ending the player receives. By allowing players to influence the creature’s emotional development, the game explores themes of nurture, empathy, and the consequences of rejection. Gameplay in The Wanderer: Frankenstein’s Creature is deliberately simple and contemplative. The experience is centered around exploration, environmental interaction, and narrative choices rather than complex mechanics or challenging combat systems. Players guide the creature through a series of beautifully illustrated environments, interacting with objects and completing small puzzles that symbolize the character’s learning process. Some sections involve musical interactions or pattern-based challenges, while others focus on observing the environment and triggering narrative events. These mechanics are intentionally light, designed to support the storytelling rather than dominate the experience. As a result, the game often feels closer to an interactive storybook or art piece than a traditional adventure game. The artistic presentation is one of the game’s most distinctive and memorable qualities. Each scene resembles a hand-painted watercolor illustration, with soft textures and flowing colors that evoke the style of Romantic-era artwork. The color palette constantly shifts depending on the emotional tone of the moment, creating a visual representation of the creature’s inner state. Bright landscapes and warm colors appear during moments of wonder or discovery, while darker tones dominate scenes of loneliness and despair. This dynamic visual style gives the game a dreamlike atmosphere that perfectly complements its reflective narrative. The audio design also contributes significantly to the experience. The soundtrack blends orchestral music with subtle atmospheric sounds, creating an emotional backdrop that evolves alongside the story. Gentle melodies accompany peaceful exploration through natural landscapes, while darker compositions underscore moments of fear or sadness. Environmental audio, such as rustling leaves, distant voices, or echoing winds, further enhances the sense of immersion. Together, the music and sound design create a contemplative mood that encourages players to slow down and absorb the emotional nuances of the story. Despite its artistic strengths, the game’s minimalist gameplay may not appeal to everyone. Players who prefer more traditional adventure mechanics, such as complex puzzles or extensive exploration systems, may find the experience somewhat limited. Movement can occasionally feel slightly awkward, and the interface does not always clearly communicate what actions are available in certain situations. The pacing is also deliberately slow, focusing on quiet reflection rather than constant activity. While this approach supports the narrative themes, it may test the patience of players expecting a more dynamic gameplay loop. The overall length of the experience is relatively short, with most playthroughs lasting only a few hours. However, the presence of multiple narrative paths and endings encourages players to revisit the story and explore different choices. Each playthrough can reveal new emotional perspectives on the creature’s journey, emphasizing how different interactions shape its understanding of humanity. In this way, the game encourages players to reflect on the moral and philosophical questions embedded within the story. What ultimately makes The Wanderer: Frankenstein’s Creature stand out is its thoughtful reinterpretation of a classic literary work. By focusing entirely on the creature’s perspective, the game highlights the tragedy at the heart of Mary Shelley’s original story. It portrays the creature as a being driven by curiosity and a desire for acceptance, only to encounter fear and rejection from the world it longs to join. This interpretation transforms the narrative into a meditation on empathy, loneliness, and the human need for connection. Overall, The Wanderer: Frankenstein’s Creature is a unique and emotionally resonant experience that prioritizes storytelling and artistic expression over traditional gameplay mechanics. Its painterly visuals, reflective narrative, and atmospheric sound design combine to create a deeply contemplative journey through one of literature’s most iconic stories. While its minimal gameplay and slow pacing may not satisfy players seeking action or complex challenges, those who appreciate narrative-driven games and artistic experimentation will likely find it to be a memorable and meaningful experience.
