The Short Bread Game is a cozy platformer where you help a piece of bread get to the bakery for breakfast. Though your path there may not be the most direct, you'll get to explore charming places. Jump high, run from enemies, and engage in witty dialogue with your odd new friend. Adventure awaits!
Revenue comes from in-game items and microtransactions, which our price-based model doesn't estimate. The player count below is how many people own it, not what they spent.
About

Being a piece of bread, you naturally crave a stack of pancakes for breakfast. To start off your day and, more importantly, fill your stomach, you set off on a journey to get the best pancakes in town. However, you soon realize you have no clue where the bakery is. Thankfully, it seems like an intruder in your house may just know where you can find it...
In this casual platformer, you explore environments ranging from your home to space. Though getting to your end goal doesn't seem hard at first, you soon find that the path there is a tad convoluted, with enemy desserts jumping around at every turn, trying to stop you. Not to mention, your new friend seems to enjoy messing around with you a bit.
If you're looking for a low-stress way to take a break, this may just be the game for you. :)

I'm assuming this is the developer's first game, so I would like to say I'm impressed! It's very cute visually and has some fun elements to it. However, I do feel that it's lacking story-wise, as well as game-play wise. The story wasn't super coherent, and I feel as if some things were thrown into the game purely for aesthetics rather than with an actual purpose. Now that's okay in moderation, but it definitely was repetitive. They told us the objective at the beginning, but as I continued playing I was just very confused as to what was ACTUALLY going on. It seemed as if the goal was to add some silliness, but it just seemed sporadic and unnecessary to me. I also was not a huge fan of the dialogue, it wasn't very immersive and it didn't entrap me into the story. Especially not with the 4th wall break. The actual game-play itself was honestly very frustrating. There were some bugs with the controls and I would just randomly stop moving, and would have to jump to get them to work again. And with jumping and going under enemies it was really annoying cause I would make it past the enemy by just a few pixels off and it would still register as a death. This seems like it was just be a minor inconvenience, but it was REALLY annoying for me. I also would have appreciated just more leniency overall with the game-play, it felt like there wasn't much room for free will movement wise. I felt trapped, and felt like I was forced to do it exactly as it was programmed (if that makes sense). I also was confused with some of the enemies.. Why would a cinnamon bun try to kill a piece of bread? We're both baked goods. And why would a meringue be out to get me in the wild? It just didn't make a whole lot of sense to me. I feel like there were ways to incorporate those elements without making them the enemy. The birds and the ducks made sense however, and I did enjoy that. Overall, I do recommend this since it's free and you lose nothing from playing it. It's cute, it's just frustrating at points and a little confusing. But then again, I'm a big nerd when it comes to story-based games, and this game never even claimed to be story-based in the tags, so maybe I'm being too critical. Anyways, I hope this was constructive for the developer and I hope it isn't seen as too harsh. Keep at it!

This game is as short and sweet as short bread
Strengths

The biggest selling point of the game is the cute pixel art of the animals, background, and bakery items
Each level has new scenery/background and a few with new mechanics
Funny dialogue between bunny and short bread
Liked special whale level
Short and sweet game (takes 30 minutes-one hour to beat)

Growths

Controls need some work. Here are some things I noticed: when original played it felt slow, floaty, and a bit unresponsive, then I got used to the controls. However there are some things such as occasionally getting stuck and can't move on platforms, etc. (Definitely needs more fixing there)
Developer(s), I am very grateful to you that you have made this game. You deserve a pat on the back for all the effort and care you put into developing this. For it is both really fun, free, and such a huge feat to actually spend months creating a game from scratch.Kudos to you! Sending best wishes to you, the game, and future developments.
Macera sizi bekliyor!
The bread moves SOOOO SLOWLY that it's a pain to try finish the game Not too mention that it's super sensitive, the bread didn't even touch the enemies yet but just a few nano pixels close and the bread died just by being too close to them :( The art is cute but i'd rather not waste my time
I'm currently doing a challenge to play through a free game in every single category on steam. I then give an honest review using ChatGPT.
Game: 127 / 447 Category: 2D Platformer "Cute, but Crusty Around the Edges" In this game, you play as an adorable piece of bread making its way to the bakery. The concept is charming, and the overall vibe is super chill. The pixel art is delightful, with some genuinely cute designs, but a few of the background assets feel unfinished, which pulls you out of the experience a bit. The biggest frustrations are with the gameplay mechanics. The controls have an annoying delay when stopping, which makes navigating tight spaces unnecessarily tricky. And the hitboxes for enemies? Bad. In a pixel art game, hitboxes should be pixel-perfect, but here they feel inconsistent—dying when your bread slice isn’t even touching an enemy is just plain unfair. With some polish—tightened controls, better hitboxes, and a bit more care in the art—this game could rise like a well-baked loaf. For now, it’s more of a slightly undercooked snack than a fully satisfying meal.
if by 'cozy' you mean 'rage bait' because my STUPID bread moves SLOW as ♥♥♥♥ then sure, it's cozy
Congrats! You've done it. With a search combination of 'short' and 'free', you've officially reached the bottom of the barrel. The Short Bread Game is a game about pancakes and trust. Beat it in 45 min using a combo of the keyboard and mouse. Difficulty is: Rage Bait. This game feels like a 'first game' for a developer. In which case, good job! You made a game! For anyone playing, be prepared for 9 levels of slow toast, and controls not responding. Sir Toasticles cannot walk a straight line without hitting an invisible pixel and getting stuck. The story is bare bones and halfway incomprehensible. Enemies can one-hit KO you, and their hit boxes extend well beyond their touch radius. The breadite runs about as fast as dinner with Grandma, and jumps about as well as her, too. On one occasion, I had to walk past the platform and stand on air in order to make a jump to another platform. Other times, the rocks would spin and make jumping unresponsive. There are no directions for what the controls do anywhere. I started with the keyboard, and then couldn't find the key to advance text to had to move to left-clicking on the mouse. Bringing up the menu? Not esc. Not Enter. Right-click. Does the menu take you back to the levels? Yes. Does it quit the game? No. To quit, I had to manually close the game by escaping to my desktop for air. Is the game cute? Nauseatingly so. Is it cozy? As cozy as bricks in a fire. Is it short? Without the issues, you could bean this game in under 10 minutes, with it, longer. Do I recommend this game? Only if you're sadistic and a special sort of bored.
"The Short Bread Game" is at least genuinely made... it's one of several thousand godawful 2D retro pixel platformers infesting Steam and lowering the average quality of video games everywhere. This one at least has a cute, novel breakfast theme, but that's not really what the tired old platformer genre needed to revive it from the dead. This features really godawful, lazy pixelcrap "art" instead of real graphics. It's hard to say if this was because the developer didn't have the skill to do the job of creating 3D visuals, or couldn't afford to hire someone who does, but it also doesn't matter. What matters is that this looks bad because of that decision, and that's a major deterrent to gamers. Games like Terraria and Stardew Valley succeeded despite the bad graphics, not because of them. Not every "free" game really is. There's often MTX, or content locked behind DLC, or donations being requested, or any other number of things that could mislead gamers, but in this case I'm glad to say this really does appear to be a fully free game. Nothing demonstrates a developers belief in themselves and their work than giving it away without any remuneration. This is a service to themselves, and the gaming industry, and should be applauded. Of course, just because something is free, doesn't necessarily mean it's valuable. Even though this is "free", it failed to appeal to the 120 million+ gamers on Steam. SteamDB showed the game peaked at only 3 concurrent players... this is a dismal public reception. This was so bad they couldn't even give it away. Sure, it's only been out less than 2 weeks, but if you look at the trends for these kinds of games, it's not going to get any better. Bearing in mind that free games don't add +1 to your game collector count, should you bother adding this to your library and downloading it? Not this time. This isn't worth downloading. While this won't cost you any money, you get what you pay for, and sometimes, even when the game is free, it's still not enough.
