About
The Message from Deep Space is an odyssey of puzzles. Take the role of the mission's Translator, working alongside a scrappy band of scientists, and venture headfirst into the world of deciphering an alien language --- completely from the ground up.
Set in 1973, Earth is the recipient of a meteorite that broadcasts radio waves. In the role of the mission's Translator, the player is responsible for designing responses to the meteorite's transmissions, which, if correct, will elicit new messages from the meteorite. Only through this radio wave dialogue will patterns, words, syntax, and meaning all take form, leaving but one question:
What is it the aliens want to say?
Translate an alien language
Learn about an alien civilization
Interface with a retro computer
Manage a user-driven dictionary
Design radio transmissions by frequency
Collaborate with scientists that respond to your actions

Inspired by The Golden Record aboard the Voyager I space probe, The Message from Deep Space takes a realistic approach to deciphering an interstellar message. Beginning with the limited universal constants available to technologically advanced civilizations, the message spans a range of real-world fields of math & science. Decoding the message is tough, but with the support of the game's meticulous linguist, the single-minded computer programmer, and the affable astronomer, it is a challenge fit for anyone with Curiosity and Perseverance.

My brain is not braining. I like it.
This game is fascinating and very good at what it does... but also deeply flawed and frustrating in some very specific ways. As a result, I would recommend it to some specific people, but I can't blanket recommend it. Since this game is about discovering a message from deep space, it is most interesting the less you know going in. So, I will try to explain my issues in vague terms first, and get more specific (and spoilery) in subsequent paragraphs. You are receiving a message from aliens. It is to be expected that aliens do not think, or talk, exactly like we do. And the aliens who crafted The Message do not - that is a good point of the game! However, it is expected that they will think/talk/act in *consistent* ways, especially as they are specifically trying to communicate with someone else. Moreso, if there are inconsistencies, one would expect them to be on the part of the aliens, as opposed to introduced by the game itself. These inconsistencies are the core of my frustration. More specifically (slight spoilers for things introduced in the first ~30 minutes of the game): At the beginning of the game, you start communicating via mathematical concepts. It quickly becomes apparent that the aliens use octal (base-8) instead of decimal (base-10) to represent numbers. By itself, this would be a good point showing how they think differently than us! Unfortunately, to smooth the experience a "base conversion" feature is introduced to (theoretically) allow the message to be translated to base-10 and your base-10 responses to be converted back to base-8. This is unfortunate, because the way the puzzles (and, later, UI) is implemented makes it obvious that actually, everything has just been switched to base-10: there is no "translation" happening. If you attempt to solve certain puzzles as if there really is a translation layer, you will get the "wrong" answer and won't progress. This kills the immersion (for people like me), because it brings the flawed existence of the game itself front-and-center, instead of letting you submerge in the illusion that you are translating a message from aliens. There are other examples, but that is both the one that appears the earliest, and the most concrete one to explain. If you read all this and thought, "what's the big deal," then perhaps this is a game for you.

PLAYER AT GAME LOVE DO
brilliant game
If you like math and science fiction this is for you!
Like crack but for nerds
Might appeal to a more mathematically/logically inclined audience more, but WOW what a journey. Loved it.
the game is a language discovey game, i have barely done 1/6th of the whole game but im having so much fun!! the start is very maths based but ive deeply enjoyed myself in it (i do love maths tbf)
You will get stuck at times trying to wrap your head around what a message is trying to convey, or what it's asking of you before you can proceed to the next message, but when you do, it's very satisfying.
This game is such a wonder. If you are a fan of games like Chants of Sennaar and Lingo prepare to find your new favorite game. Somehow The Message from Deep Space has you looking forward to doing highschool homework questions as you work to decypher an alien language. Each step forward you make, you begin to make a connection with these aliens that will keep you hooked. Each puzzle you solve leads you to more forms of communication which broadens the topics that are able to be covered. I look forward to all the progress I am making, and am sad to know that there will eventually be an end to these messages.
