Enjoyable little walking-sim with haunting themes and retro vibe that doesn't overstay it's welcome. I've not read the source material, but it's worth remembering this is intentionally not a direct interpretation of the book, but a different story, with different characters set before the events in the book. I personally think this is an entirely valid, if not far better way to tackle an interpretation where due to preference or limitations in scope, there's a desire to make something pretty different to the original work. Perhaps almost as fascinating as the story and setting itself, for some reason this appears to have set of the culture-war nut-jobs, when the story presented does not in anyway touch on topics of gender or sexuality, and the protagonist could just as easily be played by any gender without impact, since aside from the audio track, there is very little that stands out as obviously gendered in the presentation of the protagonist. Equally, discussion of anything remotely political is fairly minimal, and if anything I was left wanting for a bit more exploration on the politics and conflicts of the world in the story, although I acknowledge that such a discussion would have been a diversion from the central themes of the story. So all-in-all there's not much controversy to be seen in the actual game itself. So if the story and setting aren't enough to intrigue you into playing what is a fairly affordable little romp, you can also play it just to try and work out what the hell that lot are foaming at the mouth about.
The game is a really mixed bag, even as an item itself - there is the storytelling and there is the functionality as a game. The story is told quite well. Even if the book is familiar, there is still a constant unease in the overall mood without being too much on the nose. I particularly liked the fact that the game creates a new story that is nicely tied in to the story of the novel. The whole look-and-feel is awesome and it literally feels like "What if Cold War but space?". The atom-punk aspects are consistent and presented really well. There is an issue that is also part of the actual novel and that is characters reaching conclusions extremely quickly. In the game the progression from "this obscure thought one of our crew members had" to "this is exactly what happened" is quite fast, which does not seem very scientific. However, this is similar to how conclusions are reached in many Lem books. Then there is the actual gameplay and that one is hilariously bad. In essence, the game is a walking simulator with minimal interactions now and then. Most of the interactions are trivial like "click on that one item that is clickable" to a point where one may wonder why there is interaction at all. There are occasions where a certain choice needs to be picked, but this often gives an entirely unnecessary feeling of urgency and may be difficult to do correctly if one is still reading through the given options. The movement is clunky and awkward, the scenery is littered with invisible walls and you often can't go back even a tiny bit once you have reached a certain point. Essentially, the game is a minimally interactive movie with multiple endings, but even that was messed up - you cannot skip large parts of the talk. Particularly in the very end, you need to sit through the exact same chat several times if you want to experience all endings. Given all the previous background of the company in particular (i.e. work on well-known, beloved games), it seems very off that the gameplay in The Invincible is as bad as it is. If you care a lot about the story, but not about all possible endings and/or achievements, this game is just fine, but if you are not, all the small failures will likely win over the enjoyment.
It’s a great game—the graphics really deliver and the story is truly engaging. It’s a "walking simulator," but the kind that’s great to play on the couch with your wife. I feel it’s time very well spent, especially given the visuals and the narrative; even though the path is linear, the game creates a genuine sense of agency. It might be an illusion, but it’s so well done that it doesn’t detract from the experience at all—in fact, it becomes a real strength.
Fajna gra, ciekawa historia, ładna grafika, klimatyczny soundtrack.
I really liked this one. Exploring a mysterious planet and good voice acting while you're doing it. I never understood why more games don't do this. Instead of standing still to listen to an audiolog, explore the world through dialog while you're playing the game instead of bolted down. I also like that people are actually competent in the story, as opposed to people being obviously stupid to further the plot.
Интересная история, отличный визуал и сеттинг. Рекомендую
Legalzinho.
Similar style of game to soma, with incredible atmosphere, helped by an incredible sound track to immerse you into the game. The story is great. A little bit of stutter and a bug here and there within the game, but overall a very well made game and looking at the achievements, there are multiple endings. A good 6 to 9 hour long story game, worth buying.
