About
The Honours Project is an autobiographical walking simulator about a moment where I was struggling to come up with an idea for my University project in 2024. You are tasked with helping, by inspiring me with music. Enjoy a narrative experience by adventuring through dream-like levels, solving an occasional puzzle and listening to the dark and sometimes comical dialogue that acts as a commentary about being a student and game development. Move along at your own pace, enjoy the audio experience in a fully 3D soundscape. Find notes that explore extra lore, and get an extra sense of who I am.
The year was likely the toughest I have ever faced, and I wanted to depict these moments as an audiovisual experience with light puzzle mechanics and gameplay. The game takes around about 25 to 35 minutes to complete. The aim of this game was to help others who are in education to understand that it is okay not to know, and that the ideas will come. I too wanted to express myself in the only way I know how, and figured this would be the best platform to be able to do so.
Voice work done by the talented Josef Boon
While the game is completed, I am still relatively new in the world of game development and I expect bugs and issues, which I will hopefully have a chance to iron out. I am also not the best at optimizing due to Audio Design and narrative being my field of expertise. The game was created over the course of 5 months and was submitted as my fourth year University project that focused on how audio and narrative work together to better player experience.
This game should work with mouse + keyboard, and an Xbox controller.

хорошая игра с интересной историей и с искренностью автора
The (incredibly relatable) story being told and the way that story is being told are immaculate. Highly recommend!
Nenhuma experiência é individual mesmo. Me identifiquei com o mesmo problema que o dev teve. De saber do que quer trabalhar, mas não ter certeza do que fazer Você quer ser engenheiro, mas não sabe se quer fazer pontes, programas ou motores

The Honours Project is a short walking simulator that explores the concepts of being a student at a university, developing a computer game for school, and dealing with loss and other challenging topics. Much of your time is spent walking down hallways with some pictures and notes worthy of reflection by the developer and the player. For much of this, a narrator speaks to the player and explains his mindset at the time. The graphics are pretty realistic and straightforward, with some nice lighting effects at times. But really, it's the audio that stands out. There are about 5 "levels" to the game, and it can be completed in around half an hour. Each stage ends with a musical Simon Says kind of game. No musical knowledge is required to complete these little bits of gameplay. I really enjoyed the reflections and meanings behind the game. this game is an insane game to play, i love the idea of a game starting out in someone in denial and finally ending in a spark of ideas
I was really needing to go wee wee's but I needed all of the achievements as I am a sweaty pig rooting around the dirt for truffles, and my only solace in life is leeching after every award I can attain.
absolutely beautiful experience. It's short and hardly a game but after staring at my library deciding what to do, I couldn't have chosen a better "game" to open. Exactly what I wanted and I will be chasing the feeling of experiencing this for the first time just like many games I have played before
The Honours Project is a rare walking sim that delivers surprising emotional weight. It blends surreal exploration, honest vulnerability, and moments of humour into a deeply personal experience that still feels universally relatable. From the start, the atmosphere draws you in. The main menu sets a reflective tone, and the music adds a quiet emotional charge. Visually, the environments are subtle yet purposeful. Every space feels thoughtfully crafted to support the narrative as much as the aesthetic. The emotional impact comes not only from the strong voice-over and internal monologue, which are often raw, funny, and sincere, but also from the personal spaces you explore. The rooms, letters, photographs and scattered details speak volumes. This is environmental storytelling at its most effective, where discovery and emotion go hand in hand. The tone shifts effortlessly. One moment you are laughing, the next you are quietly devastated. That contrast is one of the game's greatest strengths. Despite the emotional weight, the experience never becomes overbearing. There are moments of levity and absurdity throughout, like the clever aspect ratio change or the perfectly awkward "♥♥♥♥ Idea" gag. Even the horror sequence, (with its Alien Museum nod), managed to both terrify and amuse me. The audio work, from voice acting to music to ambient sound, is consistently excellent and well-timed. What stood out most, from a design perspective, was the pacing. Progression feels intuitive without being overly directed. I always knew where to go, yet felt free to explore. Unlike many walking sims, I never felt aimless or frustrated. This is a compact, heartfelt experience that balances emotional honesty with creative playfulness. It made me laugh, caught me off guard, and left me thinking. A beautifully executed piece of autobiographical game design that is absolutely worth your time.
