In this interactive sci-fi adventure novel, you are the AI pilot of Earth's last interstellar ship, tasked with finding a home for your crew—the last remnants of humanity. Your choices will determine their fate, and your own.
Revenue comes from in-game items and microtransactions, which our price-based model doesn't estimate. The player count below is how many people own it, not what they spent.

Text based game where you choose 4-8 (difficulty dependent) crew members each with a job and different positive and negative personality traits. You are an AI that has to find them a world to live on. There is some good writing but like most games like this it is often too limiting, traits and choices are rarely logically used, death can be too random (extremely random on some planets/stations), and you need to try to manage fuel and food as is the common thing in survival space games which just adds even more randomness that never does anything interesting. Simple but can be good on the more interesting planets and I liked the ending I reached. No ship events or crew interaction outside of planets.

Absolute joy to play. Now, a few brief notes for those considering a purchase. 1. I read FAST. 600 pages in a day is nothing for me. 2. Simplistic game play, but a lot of reading and a very good 'exploration' feel to it. 3. Choices are typically obscured, and sometimes it's pretty irritating how stupid humans act. 4. I love my stupid humans, enjoy the game.
An interactive novel where choices actually matter as more than just flavor text. It's great, and gets semi-regular updates with QoL changes, new graphics, workshop support (was not intended originally), changes to existing missions, and even occasionally new missions. It's worth playing through multiple times to pick different characters for your crew and to use different characters on missions, as some will have unique choices/dialogue in certain spots. Devs are active in replying to discussion topics even though they're busy with other things, one of them was even hired at InXile but still works on this game. Most games would've been declared finished by now and be left as-is but almost 3 years later this is still getting updates.
This was a fun little game that I enjoyed dropping a handful of hours on. Name your crew mates after your friends and family for added entertainment. Pretty much all of the game is stored in easy to manipulate JSON files as an added bonus, so with some minor programming knowledge you can tweak your experience even further.
It's a lovingly crafted CYOA game. You can even draw and import your own characters. The developers tried to make the game accessible by providing a font option for dyslexics which helps with reading. It's little details like which show that the developers care. One complaint I have is that the crew deaths feel too random.
This is a really underapreciated experience that I fully recommend all fans of "CYOA" books to try. There are gameplay elements but the game is mainly about making choices and seeing the exciting results. Highly recommended!
"The Away Team: Lost Exodus" is at first value what you might see as one of the worst ripoffs of FTL ever made, but it's even worse than that (somehow). Instead the whole space exploration bit is a very shallow veneer bolted onto what amounts to a Choose Your Own Adventure book with just a few hints of Oregon Trail on it. The idea is you pick a crew of pixelcrap spacemen and go on a space trip looking after the last humans alive. You make CYOA decisions and click through to see what ending you get. Did I mention how bad the writing is? Real cringe high school sci-fi club dropout fan-fiction stuff. So, it's hard to describe this as a game, the focus is more like that of an e-book/visual novel, there's only minor, shallow and uninteresting gameplay elements. The crux of this is to push some very low quality, badly done fan-fiction tier writing, where we see once more a developer fail to understand the importance of "Show, don't tell", and for whatever reason, weren't able to convey their narrative through gameplay, giving us endless lines of badly written e-book text instead. My gaming rig is not a kindle. There's no option to change the resolution and no useful graphics tweaks. There's no way to ensure this is running at the native resolution of your display. There's no guarantee this game will look right on any PC as a result of this hamfisted design decision. Despite not being in Early Access, it's obvious this is an incomplete product. Developers have an obligation to deliver complete, not partially done products to gamers, that shouldn't be controversial. Whatever the excuses may be, it does no service to gamers for incomplete products polluting Steam like this. It makes it harder for gamers to find complete games, and it makes it harder for ethical developers who do the right thing to find their audience. To make matters worse, not only does this have pixelcrap "art", the pixelcrap isn't even applied consistently across the whole game. That jarring mismatch ruins any genuine "retro" authenticity from this pixelcrap nightmare. That's a tacit admission the developer might have been capable of better graphics, but still published pixelcrap instead. This game is ancient, it's over 10 years old... it's heavily dated and isn't going to give you a remotely contemporary gaming experience... another reason for gamers to be hesitant about adding this to their libraries. On the important matter of pricing and value for gamers, there's a lot going on here with monetisation, so this really shouldn't be considered a truly free product because of that. There's no initial download price, but the developer was charging $10 USD for this. Price barriers, especially on low quality products, can be a direct cause of failure. It seems like a nice gesture for the game to have no up-front cost anymore, but it also tells us that the game wasn't good enough to succeed as a paid product. This is also a bit of a slap in the face to anyone who showed enough questionable judgement to pay money for this... nobody got refunded. They also have their hand out for a $5 USD "donation" for this as you're expected to give them money from buying empty DLC from Steam... digital panhandling. Like the homeless guys who splash dirty water on your windscreen at the traffic lights. No thanks. In terms of player counts and popular reception, this couldn't even crack 100 players at its absolute peak. For a free game on a platform with 130 million players, that is a spectacular failure, mostly due to the reasons I've supplied here. Bearing in mind that free games don't add +1 to your game collector count, should you bother adding this to your library and downloading it? What's the verdict? Give this one a miss. Although it's free, your time and storage are valuable resources, and the market is filled with superior options.
