I received this game as part of a bundle. This game is ok for what it is, but overall it's poorly designed. Would not recommend. Achievements don't work either.
The asskickers feels like a homebrew someone put a lot of work into. I don't want to slam it because I don't think I could make a better game. However I can't recommend the game in its present form. If I could recommend anything to the developers of this game going forward it would be:[list] [*]The graphic style being hand drawn is quite nice, be careful of artifacts on the frames as they are glaring even if its one pixel. [*]Play the game a few times on various difficulties, at present some of the enemies patterns present an irritation instead of a challenge, as well the game gives me notifications that I completed tasks tied to achievements, but steam doesn't register the achievement. [*] Bug test, bug test, bug test: 30% of my playthroughs end at the first screen because the trigger to move me to the next area never goes off! So, in general for the steam community I can't recommend this game. It's basically a two button side-scrolling beat em up with a lot of issues. ALSO: if you are reading this, and considering a retro beat 'em up style game. If you have not already check out mother russia bleeds. It's a solid game that fills the niche I wanted this game to be a part of.
very charming. if it weren't for the broken achievements I would defend the game a bit more but I will say what I liked about it. lots of deliberate choices that are intriguing. the character movement has a unique motion or friction to it where when you let off the controls you still slide in whatever direction for a moment, turning around has a very deliberate delay involved. when you jump and attack you get an unprecedented amount of air control and can hit people with large opposite sections of your attack hit box. while the brawling is mostly bad there were some good flinchy moments where I would grab a guy stunning him, instantly cancel the grab, back kick a guy to death, regrab the same guy i grabbed before refreshing the stun, jump in the air, wiggle back and forth 3 times moving my attack hitbox around and grabbing what i can including probably the guy who is still thinking about how i grabbed him twice. the first level was kind of a meh primer not really a big draw but the second level from the beginning was very strong, I really like the guard enemy type with the shield, hitting his shield sees it recoiling back with each hit you give it to emphasize you aren't really doing anything to him. the detail in the backgrounds and scale of the level being not as alice in wonderland as the first level make it stand out in a good way. the music for the second level is quite nice also, the beginning of the stage is mostly atmospheric and then you are on top of the vehicle dodging signs, the music speeds up to let you know the speed of the vehicle is speeding up and the signs begin coming in faster, eventually you engage with enemies as the signs come flying at you but that was the moment I died. not sure what else I really liked from what I played. the entire reason the game is named asskickers is not because of the general ass kicking in the streets and other whereabouts its about finishing a stage and spanking the ass of the boss as fast and as many times as you can in some kind of weird mini game that comes off as someones fetish or something, the closest thing i can think of but there are plenty of other examples in fighting games is the car smash minigame in street fighter 2 as you are basically button mashing with a bit more complexity to a timer, it's probably some kind of odd french humor or something. you get a sense of this when the first boss you defeat is basically just a pushover that calls in regular dudes to defend him over and over until you can catch him but the store page would lead me to believe this happens after every boss since it shows it happening again in another setting. I don't feel like the combat warrants continuing but thats just me personally, i would like more moves, juggling, being able to run and less of a weird vibe with slightly better art especially when it comes to proportions regarding the first level if i am desperate for a beatemup experience maybe I would consider returning but its a wide world out there I didn't play a whole lot cause its just too busted and forgotten to even care about even for someone like me. from the menu being so ugly and feeling slightly stretched in aspect to the graphics options being a single resolution selection and the way the game launches some command prompt launcher sdl yadiyadi so 2 windows that stay open just for one thing the fidelity of the gameplay is akin to that of a basic 8 bit brawler, there's no juggling of enemies or tires to throw and watch roll around. you can get a combo going but mine seemed to stop at 2 even though I would bust up 4 or 5 guys pretty quick. might be worth a dollar but at this point games like this are becoming their own class of steam abandonware that really shouldn't be engaged with for any reason except for i guess historical time capsule
