Terminus is a surprisingly ambitious survival horror shooter that I found especially interesting because of its setting. I play as Charles Mercier, a former soldier working for a secret organization during the unrest in Paris in the late 1960s. His mission takes him deep into the Paris Metro, where what starts as a dangerous investigation quickly turns into something much more sinister. I liked the contrast between the historical setting and the supernatural science fiction horror underneath it. The third person shooting gives the game a more action focused feel than a traditional survival horror title. I have to move through underground areas while dealing with hostile creatures and managing my ammunition. I enjoyed the feeling of moving through the tunnels because the confined spaces make every encounter feel more dangerous, especially when I cannot easily tell what is waiting around the next corner. The Metro setting is easily my favorite part. The game uses the underground railway system to create a strong feeling of isolation, with dark tunnels and abandoned spaces making the journey feel increasingly oppressive. I liked that the environment feels connected to the real history of Paris while still becoming something much more fantastical as the story develops. The creature design also helps the atmosphere. The game is not afraid to show gore, dismemberment and some unsettling enemies, which gives the encounters a much harsher tone. I thought this worked well with the survival horror direction because the threats are meant to feel genuinely dangerous rather than simply decorative. My biggest issue is that the game can feel uneven. The action sections are enjoyable, but some moments feel closer to a student project than a completely polished commercial horror game. The pacing can also shift between tense exploration and more straightforward shooting, and I found myself enjoying some sequences much more than others. The historical setting also feels like something that could have been explored even more deeply. I liked the idea of connecting political unrest with a supernatural crisis, but the story sometimes feels more interested in getting me through the next encounter than fully developing the world. There is definitely potential for a bigger narrative here. Overall, Terminus is a solid short survival horror shooter with a memorable setting and some strong atmosphere. I enjoyed the Paris Metro environments, the combination of historical and supernatural themes and the more action oriented combat. It is not always consistent in its polish, but there is enough ambition and personality here to make the experience worthwhile. Rating: 6.9/10
