This is a fun little beat ‘em up game. Not overly long (probably only about two hours long overall), this game is a nostalgia trip, being a trip through many of the old bosses and characters from the 1980s/1990s TMNT TV show and video games. The game is strongly evocative of these old games, but is a significant improvement over them, with better controls, a level select, the ability to save and return between levels, and a broader cast of characters with good variety in terms of attacks. The levels have a pretty good degree of variation as well, though there’s really only two main types, the side-scrolling beat’em ups and the levels where you surf/ride on a hoverboard and fight enemies in that way. The core of the game is the usual beat em up stuff – you go through the levels, you fight the Foot clan and various other enemies who mostly die in about 3-6 hits, with a few tougher enemies that are more like 10-15 hits, and then you fight a final boss for each stage (two on some stages) with unique abilities and attack patterns. Overall, the game isn’t very difficult; you start with a full set of lives on each level and can actually increase the number of lives, hit points, etc. you have on each level by playing the game with any given character. Each character has some sort of hidden “xp bar” that can be levelled up to level 10, giving them more lives, hit points, and more bars of their ninja power meter, which lets you unleash super attacks (and thus, store up to three super attacks eventually, or unleash an even more powerful super attack using all three bars). The core plot of the game is the same as always – the TMNT are trying to stop Kraang and Shredder from doing Bad Stuff ™ and chase them through the world. The game is pretty short, so it does a reasonable enough job of keeping things moving; if it was much longer, it would probably become overly repetitive, and even at its length, it feels like it was running out of ideas by the end of it. Overall, I’d recommend this game to anyone who has a strong nostalgia for the old side-scrolling beat em up TMNT games; if you are anyone else, this is not really going to do anything for you, as it is a pretty simple game and without any sort of tie to the characters its just a decent, short beat ‘em up game. Do note that this game is only about two hours long, so unless you plan on replaying the levels with multiple characters or doing it repeatedly with friends (yes, it does have multiplayer), you might be disappointed by how short is is.
