I wish I could give a neutral review. I did play the game story through to the end, so make of that what you will. The game isn't bad, but it doesn't quite live up to my expectations either. I was told I'd love this game because I really enjoyed the Stanley Parable, but beyond both games being in first person and largely walking around, there is little in common between them. The unique perspective mechanic is admittedly cool, but quickly becomes mundane, and the game doesn't have much to offer beyond that. Very short, and if I hadn't gotten it at a 60% discount I'd be much more unhappy. Took me around 2 hours to complete at a leisurely pace, and I have no desire to redo the stages to complete achievements etc. I also found one 'hidden ending' in my playthrough by pure chance, and it was just odd. Not particularly interesting or funny, which it seemed to be going for, and also not obvious that it was a hidden ending. I initially thought I'd completed the game much earlier given that the credits rolled, and I was kicked back to the main menu. I only clicked continue again from the main menu because I was sure that couldn't be it, and there were things I remembered from the store page that I hadn't seen yet. The commentary from the doctor and the robotic voices is largely uninspired, and the game can't seem to decide whether it's trying for a positive 'overcoming adversity' message, or 'wacky' 'lol sooo randum' nonsense. The one or two puzzles where I got slightly stuck for 5 minutes didn't feel particularly satisfying when working them out, being resolved in the instances I can think of by figuring out 'oh so that's the thing I'm allowed to click on', and by
realising that the solution was to tediously (and trickily) jump and release the same block awkwardly over and over until it was big enough
. It also got very frustrating that the game very often
rug pulls you by having you drop through the floor as you're heading toward something in the distance. Once or twice is fine, but it got to the point that whenever I was heading down a corridor I anticipated being dropped into a new environment and was often right.
I'd say if you can get it at a steep discount, and are happy for a short exploration of the perspective mechanic, then go ahead and give it a go, but don't expect anything more than that. Certainly don't go in expecting charm and humour to the level of the Stanley Parable, to which this is often compared.
Not for me. I get why a lot of people love this game. It's well made and the perspective scaling can be a lot of fun. I just expected a competent puzzle game and that's not what I got. Every challenge boils down to, make big, make small, and/or find the right angle, which I don't find fun. I went in with the expectation of this being a puzzle game that uses perspective mechanics. What I got was a tech demo showcasing a bunch of cool ways to use perspective in a game and the same puzzle 50 times in a row. Maybe you'll enjoy Superliminal, but if you're looking for a challenging puzzle game, I suggest you stay clear of this one.
10/10 mind twister game now I just have to grind all the achievements to fully complete the game Edit: Alright after just 2 days of owning the game I alredy have 20 out of the 27 achievements. I'll most likely won't get all of them like the Superluminal where you have to beat the game under 30 minutes, but hey I'm just loving this game! Edit 2: I got all the achievements without using any glitches or what not, just straight up completing the puzzles as fast as I could.
A relatively short experience but a good one nonetheless. It is an excellent and fun puzzle game that relies on out-of-the-box thinking with a unique liminal space level design. Highly recommend you check this out if you're also into puzzle games.
