Found the page for SUPER ALICE DOLLS back in April while checking Steam for any upcoming Touhou fangames, and bought it as soon as I noticed it was released in Early Access. After completing both a Normal and Challenging playthrough, and getting all the achievements, here are my thoughts. If you've ever played a Mario game before, this shares a lot of similarities with its platforming style, hitting blocks, and some of the powerups that Alice grabs in the form of dolls. Interestingly, the game seems to share some traits with Sonic in terms of momentum physics, where doing things like sliding down slopes or running into the sides of the large puffballs (I don't remember if that's their actual name) like they're springs can provide high speed that's not possible by simple dashing. Wish there were more stages that could make the most of this speed potential, but if more stages are gonna be added later on, maybe this will be seen there. Powerups are pretty good for the most part. You got four combat-focused dolls (Fire, "Hammer", Laser, and Invincibility), and four platformer/puzzle focused dolls (Grapple, Air, Shield, and Knight/Decoy). Overall, a substantial amount to get through stages with. You got your combat-based dolls like the Red Dolls (basically Mario's Fire Flower), Black Dolls (works like Mario's Hammer Suit), the Yellow Dolls (a piercing laser), and the White Dolls that give you speed and invincibility. Along with them, there's the more puzzle/platforming focused ones, like the grapple doll that lets you grab walls, the air doll that gives you a hovering double jump like NSMBWii's Propeller Suit, the green dolls that provide shields, and the knight doll that you throw as a decoy. The levels have a notable amount of variety, being a mix of straightforward platforming, and puzzle-solving, and a few speedier ones. The puzzle-solving trait becomes more notable as you try to obtain the grimoires, and odds are you'll have to hit Reset in the pause menu if you wish to collect them all. The Point Item (the blue icons) aspect comes off underwhelming at the moment. By collecting said Point Items, you can use them either to buy more lives, or to unlock the bonus stages. While fine in itself, you're able to find so many Point Items and get so many lives, odds are you won't feel a need to buy extra lives, and unlocking the bonus stages don't cost that much. Since the game is in Early Access, maybe more things will be added that Point Items will be used for, so I'll hold off on any final thoughts on this for now. There's likely things I've overlooked, but at the moment, the game appears to be at a solid start for being in Early Access. Looking forward to future updates.
i have no idea what the hell im doing\ edit after 1.0 came out : i still have no idea what the hell im doing but. game good. fun even
Cute and fun.
This is a difficult one to recommend, making me wish for a "maybe" option. Super Alice Dolls starts off relatively simple and feels relaxed, then a few levels in feels as if there's a sudden whiplash of difficulty. If it weren't for the generous checkpoints and health bars, coupled with other handy things like being able to move your start point after falling, I would only recommend it for the absolute hardcore bullet hell and/or platformer crowd. There's enough levels that are part of the base stages where one can easily get stuck and trapped in a no-win scenario, furthered by some stages requiring extremely precise timing and reflexes that will give a casual user too much frustration. There were more than a few times where I wanted to throw my controller out the window! The parts I really liked were extremely good, so the frustrating parts were perplexing to me as they didn't follow the pattern of expectations. These stages made good use of the available powerups to solve unique puzzles without pressuring for time and reflexes, making for a fun experience as failing didn't suddenly mean damage/death. Then the next stage would be total whiplash, requiring precisely timed jumps and speeds where failure meant falling down a bottomless pit. It's a bit confusing and felt as if the designer was trying to cater to both a hardcore and casual crowd at the same time, but I'm not sure if either would be totally satisfied. The bonus stages beyond 8-4 are absolutely different and are most definitely not for the casual player. 8-5 was an extremely rude awakening, being an extremely long sequence of precise timing and unforgiving of mistakes. It was a time-consuming segment that could easily have been split into three sections due to the difficulty. The target audience for these stages is definitely not the casual crowd as they will find themselves extremely frustrated in short order, plus the inability to easily quit and leave these long sections will make it difficult to attack in bite-sized chunks. As I can only recommend yes/no, I'm only slightly leaning toward the "yes" side, if only because it is a pretty well polished experience, it's not overly expensive, the fun segments are definitely fun, and the unique take on using the doll powers for various puzzles can make it worth it. However, the frustrating segments that intend to pressure over time, reflexes, and no-win situations will demand patience, grit, and perseverance to get through them. That's a hard sell for a casual audience with limited time, and the hardcore audience won't appreciate the majority of the relaxed parts before they get to the Dark Souls-like bonus content.
