Stumble Guys

Stumble Guys is one of those games I can load up without really having to think about what I am doing. I am thrown into short obstacle course matches where I have to run, jump, dodge things and try not to get knocked off the map. Up to 32 players can be in a match, and the rounds get smaller as the game goes on until there is one winner. I like how easy it is to understand because I can play for a few minutes or keep going when I get into a good run. It has a very simple idea and it does not waste much time getting me into the action. The maps are probably the best thing about it for me. There are more than 60 maps, and they range from straightforward races to courses where I have to survive moving platforms, traps and other hazards. Some are mostly about getting to the finish quickly, while others are more about staying alive when the whole area is trying to throw me off. I like learning the layouts because once I know where the shortcuts and dangerous sections are, I can start making better decisions instead of just running forward and hoping for the best. The physics can also create some ridiculous moments when I get hit at exactly the wrong time. There is more progression here than I expected when I first tried it. I can level up through the Stumble Journey system, collect cosmetics and work through different rewards, while ranked tournaments give me something more competitive to work towards. There are also limited time events and special modes that change the usual gameplay. I like having these extra systems because without them I think I would probably run out of reasons to keep coming back much quicker. The crossover content and large amount of cosmetics also give me plenty of things to collect, although most of that is obviously about appearance rather than changing how I play. The main problem for me is that the actual gameplay loop can become repetitive. I am still running through obstacle courses, and even with a lot of maps there is only so much variety I can get from jumping, dodging and trying to stay on the platform. Some rounds are also more about dealing with chaos than showing any real skill, especially when a group of players reaches the same obstacle at once. I find that funny sometimes, but it can also be annoying when I get knocked off because several things happen at once and I have very little control over it. The free to play side is another thing I have to put up with. The game is free and I can play the actual matches without buying anything, but there are loads of cosmetics and in game purchases around the progression systems. I do not need to spend money to enjoy the basic gameplay, which I appreciate, but the amount of cosmetic stuff can make the reward system feel more focused on collecting than actually improving. There are also plenty of events and rotating content, which is good for keeping things fresh, although it means some of the experience can feel tied to what is currently available. What I really like is how accessible the whole thing is. I do not need to spend hours learning complicated controls before I can start doing well. The basic movement is easy, but there is still room for me to improve my routes, timing and knowledge of each map. Cross play between Steam and mobile is also useful because I can play without being restricted to one platform. I think the game works especially well when I just want something colourful and silly that gives me quick matches without demanding a huge time commitment. Overall, Stumble Guys is a fun party game that does exactly what I expect it to do. I like the large selection of maps, simple controls, short matches and the extra progression that gives me reasons to keep playing. The biggest issue is that the core gameplay does not change enough to keep me interested forever, and the free to play systems can sometimes put too much attention on cosmetics and rewards. Still, when I want something casual that I can jump into quickly and have a bit of chaotic fun with, it works really well. It is not deep enough for one of my really high ratings, but it is polished and entertaining enough to sit comfortably above average for me. Rating: 8.2/10
