Stray Review
Rating: 8.7/10 Stray is a game built around a simple but incredibly effective idea: what if you could explore a mysterious cyberpunk city as a stray cat? The result is a charming and atmospheric adventure that combines exploration, light puzzle-solving and storytelling into a relatively short but memorable experience.
A World Full of Atmosphere
The game's biggest strength is its setting. The futuristic city is beautifully designed, filled with neon signs, narrow alleyways, abandoned buildings and countless small details. Even though the world is not particularly large, it feels alive and mysterious. Playing as a cat also makes exploring the environment surprisingly enjoyable. You can climb through windows, jump across rooftops, scratch furniture and interact with objects in ways that make the character feel like an actual cat rather than simply a human character in disguise.
The Cat Is the Star
The protagonist is undoubtedly the highlight of Stray. The cat has a convincing range of animations and behaviors, from stretching and sleeping to rubbing against characters and knocking objects off surfaces. These small details give the game a huge amount of personality. The relationship between the cat and B-12, the small drone accompanying you throughout the adventure, is also one of the game's strongest narrative elements. Their relationship develops naturally and gives the otherwise quiet story an emotional core.
Exploration & Gameplay
Exploration is generally relaxing and enjoyable. The game encourages you to look around, investigate your surroundings and search for hidden objects. The puzzles are relatively simple, however. While this makes the game accessible, players looking for challenging puzzles or complex gameplay systems may find Stray somewhat shallow. There are also sections involving stealth and combat. These provide some variety, but they are not nearly as polished as the game's exploration. Combat in particular feels functional rather than exceptional.
Story & Characters
The story is surprisingly emotional. What begins as a simple journey to find a way back home gradually develops into a story about humanity, artificial intelligence, loss and the remnants of a civilization that no longer exists. The game does not explain everything immediately, allowing the player to gradually understand what happened to the world. Some characters are memorable, while others receive relatively little development. Because of the game's short length, certain parts of the story can feel like they end just as they start becoming interesting.
The Biggest Weakness: Length
The biggest problem with Stray is its length. The game can be completed in roughly five to eight hours, depending on how much you explore. While the relatively short runtime keeps the experience focused, it also leaves you wanting more. There are several areas that feel like they could have been expanded significantly. More exploration, additional puzzles or deeper character interactions could have turned an already good game into something truly exceptional.
Art & Sound
Visually, Stray is excellent. The combination of neon-lit cyberpunk environments and abandoned industrial areas creates a distinctive atmosphere. The soundtrack complements the setting particularly well, switching between relaxing ambient music and more intense compositions when necessary. The environmental sound design also deserves praise. The constant hum of machinery, distant noises and small details make the city feel much more believable.
Final Verdict
Stray is a beautiful and charming adventure that succeeds primarily because of its atmosphere, world and protagonist. Its relatively simple gameplay, short length and underdeveloped combat prevent it from being a perfect experience. However, the game never overstays its welcome and manages to tell an emotional story without becoming unnecessarily complicated. Most importantly, Stray proves that sometimes a great game does not need complicated mechanics. Exploring a beautiful world as a cat is already enough to create something memorable. Final Score: 8.7/10 Pros: • Fantastic atmosphere • Beautiful cyberpunk world • Excellent cat animations and interactions • Emotional story • Memorable relationship between the cat and B-12 • Great soundtrack and sound design • Accessible gameplay Cons: • Relatively short • Simple puzzles • Combat is underdeveloped • Some characters lack development • Limited gameplay variety Verdict: Stray is a charming and atmospheric adventure with an unforgettable protagonist. It may not offer the deepest gameplay, but its beautiful world, emotional story and unique premise make it well worth experiencing.
Stray is just a good game. It has nice environments and scenery, especially considering we're in underground cities. The developers have made them actually look nice, not just dull. Playing as a cat of all things in a run-down city inhabited by robots is a good, unique concept, and the story ties it all together well. The graphics are also good, and the game is better than plenty of triple A games, which considering it's a indie game is also very good. Overall, It's worth a play.
I love this game so much, I hope the developers make a sequel/spinoff or something. This game was the perfect mix of adventure, exploration, puzzles and action. I got so emotionally invested in this game my brian chemistry will forever be changed.
this game is absolutely gut wrenching in the best way possible, i have been crying for 5 minutes now at the ending, the end really makes you feel the emotional bond u didnt think u even had

A very chill game. I would love a sequel to learn more about this game's world. Hell, I'd even like to play a sequel with a new Cat or even a Stray Dog.
stimmig gehalten, und auch mal was anderes eine Katze zu steuern. Aber das Gameplay ist leider langweilig. Habe es zurückgegeben.
