Stratego® Online

Quite possibly the best strategy game on Steam, and most certainly the best port of any board game. How good is this game? I played it in the 1960's and you can still buy it in any board game section of any store today. Longevity is a great barometer for how good a game is. The essence of the game is this: You have an army of 40 units including a flag that you must protect. Your opponent cannot see your units until he reveals them one by one and vice versa. You reveal the opponents pieces by killing one, getting killed by one, or using a scout to spot one. Your highest piece is the Marshal. The marshal can take any piece except for a bomb. The only pieces that can take a Marshall is another Marshal which sacrifices them both in a tie, or a Spy, which can killa marshal outright, but only if the spy attacks first. The spy is otherwise super vulnerable and should be kept hidden for ambushes at all costs. The idea is to lure the opponent's Marshall to your spy which is hidden before he takes out your higher units, especially your General, the second highest piece. You will usually find the spy lurking near the general to protect him from the Marshall...hence my comment about luring the Marshal earlier. Hitting a bomb with anything but a miner kills it. So placing bombs strategically is paramount. Some players place them around their flag to protect it, but I've seen strategies where they don't use bombs near their flag at all. Both methods work depending on the player you run up against. Playing against the A.I. was fun, but the real fun is PVP. Getting a match happens pretty quickly. I've waited about a minute or two maximum. You rank up the more you play. Strategy is huge, but luck can also play a part. Example: If you were an aggressive player, you might storm his front line through the middle channel with your Marshall. As you enter the zone where his forces are, you must either keep going straight or make a left or right. Choose wisely and you may take several of his men. Choose the wrong direction and you may run into his spy or a bomb. There are also certain times when you did successfully overrun him, but he manages to get behind you and goes into your own zone. At this point it's whoever gets lucky and avoids the bombs or the spy since you've each made it to each other's side. But that's only a smidgen of the strategies involved; barely a sliver of all the different strategies you can use. One of the cool parts of the game is that once you set up your men, you can save that setup. You're allowed three different ones, and if you want to tweak them before a match starts you can. Be warned....this game is super addictive and extremely fun. There's a reason this game has been around since 1946. It's freaking awesome!

What a great game! It’s very fun and challenging. However, it would be even better if players were allowed to upload their own images for their avatars.

This is a fine break from serious MMO and MMORPG or Survival gaming. It helps that I'm a boomer and Stratego was a top end family game when I was young.

Plays like Stratego. I've enjoyed it.
