Very nice game if you like lovecraftian themes. The mechanics are so-so overall but at the same time are surprisingly polished. I absolutely loved the characters. The plot is quite nice too, being short isn't a negative when it means not overstaying the welcome (beat it in about 4 hours). It's not super scary but builds a lot on body horror, fear of the sea, and fear of structural failure. Chase sequences aren't overplayed either which I think lends a lot to my positive review. I'd recommend it as a horror game for people who are starting to dip into the genre. 7.5/10 for me but I could understand it being a 9/10 for people who aren't as used to horror games.
The Chinese Room's best work to date. I'll say outright that the visuals and the audio are just perfect. I've never been to one, much less a 70s one, but this is really how I'd expect a 1975 Scottish oil rig to look. There is an unbelievable amount of little details in every area you go to. When people start turning, the monster designs are also quite unique. The thing, whatever it is, melts flesh, but doesn't fully dissolve it. There is a little bit of a nautical vibe to them, but on the broad strokes, it's not anything you'd call a rip-off. The thing (it's not named in-game) does sort of remind me of Amnesia's Shadow; it's a big meaty sprawling creature. But it's way more visually colorful than the Shadow, resembles a muscle more than the Shadow's lump of meat look, and isn't implied to be something that has its own mind. Speaking of color, don't let the screenshots mislead you either, it's a very colorful game. Without breaking immersion, you can be going from pitch black to emergency red lights to otherworldly blues. I bet this game would look awesome on an OLED screen if you have one. Finally, performance was fine. Use DLSS or FSR instead of UE's own upscaler. The voice acting, as you might have heard, is also great. The game is fully voice acted in vernacular Scottish English. It's the right amount of vernacular to put in a game, if that makes any sense. I don't know how the writing process went, but when an uninformed writer tries to have vernacular speech, it can often confine itself to simple stock phrases or swear words. While Still Wakes the Deep has many many many swears, it's not grating or caricature-ish. The soundtrack was composed by Jason Graves of Dead Space fame who did an amazing job here. The game's credits feature Maggie MacInnes, a Scottish Gaelic singer, who voices a traditional Scottish folk song about [spoilers] not being able to return home. [/spoilers] In terms of gameplay, I really liked the idea, though I wish they had gone further. The best way I can describe the gameplay is a horror procedural. A "procedural", especially in TV shows, is a type of series where the point of the show is to have the main characters do their job. Think CSI, Law & Order, or ER; and Better Call Saul or House as a mix of procedurals and straight up fiction. So here, Still Wakes the Deep is quite close to the realistic end of that spectrum. Most of the game is going around fixing electrical faults in the failing oil rig, or turning on devices, and even putting out fires with extinguishers. I only wish, maybe, they had made the electrical stuff deeper (no pun intended), since our main character is an electrician. But that could make them add a minigame, which could make the game infinitely worse. In sum, this is way more of a "game game" than TCR's walking sim portfolio. The story and the writing are quite good. Without spoilers, I found that this game had the strongest, and the most personal theme, out of any TCR game. It's mostly about courage and responsibility, and how things that seem obvious to us might not always be in the best interest of people whom we think we are protecting. As I said before, the writing itself is great. Continuing from the "procedural" idea, most dialogue is practical, but they have managed to put an insane amount of personal, endearing dialogue that gets across a lot of character for the cast. For most of the game you will only have about 7-8 characters to keep in mind, including the main character, all of whose personality really comes across with dialogue, especially since they're mostly heard through phone calls and flashbacks. As a final note, don't expect empty philosophizing from this game like other "walking sims" or TCR's own Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs. At its core, it's a very simple theme and story that the game wants to tell you, but that simplicity is what makes it unique combined with the "Scottish workman struggling with life" perspective that it brings. I had played this in 2024 on Xbox Game Pass, and I bought it again because I liked it so much that I had to have in my library, and also to support the devs one more time. I did not regret double dipping and playing through it again even if it might appear to be a "walking sim". To be fair, it's only 4 hours or so, but tightly paced and you might just finish it in one sitting if you have no other place to be. Overall, this was very enjoyable. It's got way more than just walking, has very unique aspects to it and, so far, is The Chinese Room's best game.
The graphics are nice the gameplay not all that fun just a walking sim. the story is ok nothing that sticks out just hey this thing happend now you have to survive with alot of walking for the sake of streaching the gameplay that's about it. performance was fine in till after the flare part then the cutscenes got choppy and fps drop during some gameplay. there's really not enough monster encounters so it really just feels like walking sim for the sake of dragging out gameplay.
The story was alright, especially near the end. However, I can not recommend this game, especially at full price. It took me about 4.5 hours to complete, which given the price is not worth it to me. I got in on sale, though, so it's okay. The worst part about this game are its technical issues. I have an RTX 5080 and upon launching the game I got errors about some UE LowLevelFatal error that my GPU has run out of graphics memory. Yeah right! Turns out when googling this issue there exist a few workarounds for this, all of which require you to jump through some hoops and/or change the paging size in your OS. Yeah no thanks. How about you fix your game? This error has been posted on reddit and youtube numerous times, and yet there is no fix after years, even though this makes the game practically unplayable. The fix that worked for me was to force the game to run in DX11, which worked. However, now I could not use FrameGen, which takes me to the next problem: The performance is abysmal. As soon as you step out on the deck of the oil rig, you get to watch your fps drop from 100+ in my case to about 18. On an RTX 5080, mind you. DLSS does nothing and changing the settings provides some relief. I never got above 40 fps while outside, though. Fps is fine while indoors, except for the occasional frame drop. The worst part about this game is that upon starting the game in DX12 mode, it would freeze my entire pic to the point I couldn't even launch the task manager or shut it off. I had to hold the power button of my PC down for 5s to force a shutdown. What a joke! It even happened at random points while playing the game, too. I've been playing video games on PC for more than a decade at this point and never have I had a game just lock up the entire PC to the point that you have to force shutdown by holding the power button down. So no, I can not recommend this game due to the severe technical issues. You can see my specs in the review.
tl;dr: the true horror was the OSHA violations all along I enjoyed the game enough that the issues I had with it, i.e. having to uninstall and reinstall the game to resolve the game getting stuck on the .NET installer on launch and having really bad stuttering, are forgiven. Not the most original of horror monsters, but a very thorough and original setting. It felt like playing through an SCP article, which I like in my horror games. Very few jump scares, always appreciate when a game doesn't rely on startling me to make me feel crawling dread.
