Squeakross: Home Squeak Home

This game is basically Picross gameplay fused with Animal Crossing-style home decoration, where every puzzle you solve builds a piece of furniture for your rat's house. Genius really is adjacent to madness. The whole thing is very mechanically sound, with an interface and controls are clean and well thought-out across every input method, be it pad, mouse, or Steam Deck trackpad. There are also some genuinely useful features for newcomers, like logic hints that flag rows/colums that are illogical, or contain cells that can be safely inferred. It's the kind of polish that makes a puzzle game feel welcoming without dumbing itself down. The amount of content is just staggering, easily dozens upon dozens of hours. Maybe too much content even, considering that having furniture as the subject matter for nearly every single picross grid gets limiting pretty quickly: the images you solve rarely bear much resemblance to the object they're supposed to represent, which slightly undermines the satisfaction of the reveal. The decoration side of things also struggles to keep up with the puzzle side. since space for all your newly crafted furniture runs out fast, and unlocking new rooms requires solving an almost prohibitive number of puzzles. Considering that each one adds yet another piece of furniture to place, the vicious cycle continues. But at least you have loads of customisation choices. The whole thing simply radiates love and care. A favourite little feature of mine is the newsletter: the game is tied to a real-life association for the care and rehoming of retired lab rats. This means that you periodically get little emails full of adorable rat facts and pictures. That's a really wholesome touch that I genuinely cherished.

i'm already 7 hours in and I feel like I've barely scratched the surface as i've completed 80 levels out of 800 i think? needless to say there's so much content to this game! this is definitely the best nonogram game on steam and possibly the best I've ever played. the artstyle is so cute and completing levels is so rewarding as you unlock new furniture for each level. this game is an absolute gem!!

I love picross/nonograms and this is a game where you can do that and also make a home for your pet rat. That makes it a good game. Thank you for reading my review.

So much fun! I LOVE nonogram puzzles, and there's SO MANY in this game. I'm 100 hours in, and I haven't finished yet! That's an astounding amount of puzzles. A previous nonogram puzzle game only lasted me an afternoon, but I've been enthralled by this game for weeks. The perfect game to listen to an audiobook or podcast to.

theres SO many puzzles. the decorating is animal crossing style, so not great. but SO MANY PUZZLES. great if you love nonagrams, great if you love rodents.
