I played this back in the day on my dads computer and saw it pop up on steam, so i got it, for me its worth the nostalgia value, and a decent game given when it was released, enjoyable despite some flaws, like no proper tutorial, or starting with no weapons, hard to figure out controls etc..
Space Trading/combat/mining/upgrading aplenty. seriously overlooked, grafixs bit dated but eminanly playable, joystick or keyboard and mouse both have good control, get the HD version, definately worth the small price you have to pay.

It still plays great and without any issues, but not many will go for it today. Gameplay doesn’t feel old-school and keeps it simple. That’s fortunate because tutorial is just a bunch of messages that doesn’t teach you anything. Most actions, such as aiming and firing, can be done using a mouse, while more complex actions require a keyboard. You may regulate your speed using the scroll button or by matching the speed of your target. There is also a temporary boost for swiftly going somewhere or getting out of a battle. The left mouse button fires lasers, while the right is tied to missiles. These are extremely valuable because you only have a limited supply. Laser firing consumes energy, although it recharges rather quickly. Energy is also used to power shields, which replenish when not taking damage. If you're in trouble, you can transfer energy to the forward or rear shields. Although new ships and weaponry can be purchased, all upgrades must be completed using resources obtained in a variety of ways. Once you acquire the requisite amount, you can upgrade eight statistics, including speed, weapon damage, and targeting. Everything can be done immediately from your inventory, so there's no need to visit a space station. The space is open, allowing you to go anywhere. It is populated by 10 factions who will either allow you to fly freely or shoot you on sight. By docking at stations, you can do secondary tasks for whatever faction you desire and increase your ranking. Bribing someone with money is the simplest option, but it can be costly if they are hostile toward you. The majority of information is available at all times, however you must dock to trade or accept missions. This might be a space station or trading ships that often travel through friendly systems. Jumping between systems is a bit awkward because you have to fly to the jump point. Although there is a quick jump to the point, it can only be used when you are far away from stations. You’re free to do whatever you want. You can try to gain money through trading valuable goods between systems, do missions, or take the pirate route and attack vulnerable ships. There are also story missions, but they aren't that enjoyable. You accomplish a variety of tasks, but the script is not that interesting. Also, the font is too small on big resolutions. Time spent in the game will depend on how you remember the old days. Graphics might not be great, but gameplay is still there.
An old classic space sim, not for everyone but for adventurer who dare go to space.
Spaceforce Rogue Universe HD, developed and published by Dreamatrix, is one of those hidden space simulators that aimed far beyond the expectations of its time. Built as an open-world science-fiction adventure, the game combines elements of space combat, trading, exploration, and role-playing into a single package. Although its original release dates back to an earlier era of PC gaming, the HD version gives it a second life by improving visual fidelity while preserving the ambitious foundation underneath. From the outset, the game invites players to step into a sprawling galaxy where survival and success are entirely dependent on personal choices rather than a rigid campaign structure. The title's greatest accomplishment is the sheer scale of its universe. Players are given access to numerous star systems populated with planets, space stations, asteroid fields, and hostile territories. Exploration feels rewarding because the game constantly presents opportunities to uncover new sectors, engage in profitable trade routes, or accept contracts from various factions. Rather than forcing a single playstyle, Spaceforce Rogue Universe HD allows players to become whatever they choose, whether that's an honest merchant transporting goods across the galaxy, a feared pirate hunting vulnerable ships, or a mercenary taking on dangerous combat assignments. This flexibility gives the experience considerable replay value and helps the universe feel dynamic despite its age. Progression is another area where the game performs well. Ships can be upgraded extensively with improved weapons, shields, engines, and specialized modules, giving players a constant incentive to earn credits and seek better equipment. Watching a humble starter vessel evolve into a heavily armed spacecraft capable of surviving intense engagements is satisfying throughout the lengthy campaign. The RPG-inspired mechanics, including faction reputation and character development systems, add a layer of depth that rewards long-term investment. Every accomplishment feels earned, especially since the game rarely holds the player's hand. Combat remains entertaining, even if it occasionally shows its age. Battles are fast-paced and filled with laser fire, missile launches, and large-scale encounters between competing forces. The HD enhancements improve environmental details and ship textures, making space itself an attractive backdrop for these encounters. However, enemy behavior can sometimes feel simplistic, and prolonged combat sessions may become repetitive. Likewise, the interface and controls reflect design philosophies from the mid-2000s, which can make navigation and management feel cumbersome for players accustomed to modern conveniences. The lack of comprehensive tutorials also means newcomers should expect a period of experimentation before becoming comfortable with the game's numerous systems. The story serves primarily as a framework for the sandbox experience rather than the main attraction. While there is a narrative to follow, complete with missions and major events, the most memorable moments are usually those created by the player. Unexpected encounters during exploration, desperate escapes from overwhelming enemy forces, and profitable discoveries hidden in distant sectors contribute more to the game's identity than its scripted sequences. In many respects, Spaceforce Rogue Universe HD embraces the philosophy that a space simulator should provide tools for adventure rather than dictate every step of the journey. Despite its rough edges, Spaceforce Rogue Universe HD deserves recognition for its ambition. Dreamatrix attempted to build a living galaxy filled with opportunities and player agency, and the result remains compelling years later. Its dated interface, steep learning curve, and occasional mechanical shortcomings prevent it from reaching the heights of genre-defining classics, but they do little to diminish the sense of freedom it provides. Players willing to invest the time to learn its systems will discover a surprisingly deep and rewarding experience that still stands apart from many modern indie space titles. Spaceforce Rogue Universe HD is ultimately a love letter to classic space sandboxes. It may not possess the polish of contemporary releases, but its expansive universe, meaningful progression, and emphasis on player choice ensure it remains an enjoyable journey through the stars. For fans of exploration-heavy space simulators, it is a worthwhile adventure that continues to demonstrate how far passion and ambition can carry a game. Rating: 6/10
Well, this was a non-starter for me. Literally. Started the game in the "activate five satellites" mission, but one problem: the ship I spawned in had no equipment, no weapons, no missles, no energy cells, nothing. Only managed to beat the first mission by colliding with the pirates. Was left thinking, okay maybe now they'll give me some weapons. Nope. Got sent on a second mission to destroy pirates...with no weapons. I have a pretty low bar as far as giving games a fighting chance. This one didn't clear it. Uninstall.
Got it for free.
I had this in my late teens, great little sim atmosphere is top notch and the music is awesome.
