Space Invaders Extreme

As a huge fan of the Space Invaders IP since the arcade days, I can confidently say that this is definitely the worst game in Space Invaders history.

Fun! Not as great as its sequel, which only ever released on the Nintendo DS. I had no idea the original was remastered in 2018. If you've never played, think Pac-man championship edition, Lumines, Geometry wars for highscore chasing. Lining up things to get bonuses in this game feels a bit like pinball, too. The world needs more highscore chasing games like this, all we get are roguelikes/lites. Its still worth a play and feels a little distinct from the sequel thanks to some improvements. If you like this style of game, or the classics, snag it.. I'm not a fan of the warioware-esque bonus stages to get into fever, or the mechanics on the bosses being extensive in comparison to the sequel, so the very short five stage runs feel samey for those periods. They're not nearly as fun as the moment to moment gameplay and I don't remember the sequel being that way. The sequel is also much showier when you get the big payoffs. Since the formations don't really change in this one, memorization might be a little too important. It could also use a guide for its very convoluted score mechanics. Despite that, the shorter runtime for a full game keeps it fun and fever into a ton of points feels as great as ever. I think its an overlooked gem and would love the sequel to get similar treatment, or to see a third game. I don't think its popular enough but I'd be very happy to see it.
