Sonny Legacy Collection brings together two cult browser-era RPGs that built a reputation around tactical turn-based combat, character customization, and an unusually thoughtful take on the zombie apocalypse. Developed by Krin Juangbhanich and published by Armor Games Studios, the collection preserves Sonny and Sonny 2 for a modern audience while retaining the structure and personality that defined their original releases. Rather than attempting to disguise their age with a complete remake, the package embraces their legacy, making it particularly interesting for players who remember the Flash gaming era. The premise immediately separates Sonny from conventional zombie stories. Players control an undead protagonist who awakens with fragmented knowledge of his circumstances and begins searching for answers about his resurrection. Instead of portraying zombies purely as disposable monsters, the narrative places an intelligent member of the undead at its center. Sonny's journey gradually exposes him to hostile survivors, dangerous creatures, mysterious organizations, and the ZPCI, all while raising questions about what happened to him and what is occurring throughout the deteriorating world. Combat provides the collection with most of its lasting appeal. Battles are turn-based and place greater importance on planning than reflexes. Players must consider offensive abilities, defensive techniques, healing, status effects, equipment, and the strengths and weaknesses of individual opponents. Straightforward encounters can often be handled aggressively, but tougher enemies encourage a more calculated approach. A character that appears powerful on paper can still struggle when equipped with an unsuitable ability setup, making experimentation an important part of progression. Character development complements this tactical focus. Sonny can be shaped through different abilities and equipment choices, allowing players to create builds suited to their preferred strategies. The system becomes especially interesting when difficult encounters force a reassessment of previously successful tactics. Instead of relying entirely on grinding for higher statistics, players may need to change their ability selection, improve survivability, alter attack priorities, or develop a more efficient sequence of actions. This makes progression feel more involved than simply watching numbers increase. Sonny 2 represents a noticeable evolution of the formula. It expands the available classes and abilities while providing seven zones to battle through. The larger selection of character-building options gives combat additional strategic flexibility, and the sequel's encounters generally make better use of those systems. Players who enjoy experimenting with builds can spend considerable time finding combinations that balance damage output, resource management, defense, and utility. The continuation of Sonny's story also gives the collection a satisfying sense of progression when the two games are played in sequence. Difficulty can occasionally become one of the collection's more divisive qualities. Some encounters are significantly more demanding than the battles surrounding them, creating noticeable spikes in challenge. These moments can be frustrating when a favored build suddenly becomes ineffective, but they also demonstrate the strength of the underlying combat system. Winning after adjusting abilities or discovering an opponent's weakness is considerably more satisfying than simply overpowering every enemy without changing tactics. The visual presentation inevitably reveals the games' browser origins. Character artwork, environments, interfaces, and animations have a distinctly older 2D aesthetic. Players expecting the extensive animation and environmental detail of a contemporary RPG will find the presentation modest. However, the artwork possesses its own recognizable personality, and the darker visual direction suits the bleak setting. The collection is best approached as preservation of classic games rather than a complete graphical reconstruction. Its age is also apparent in the pacing and general structure. Repeated battles can become somewhat monotonous during extended sessions, and certain aspects of navigation and presentation lack the refinement expected from newer RPGs. Storytelling is comparatively economical, relying on dialogue and atmosphere rather than elaborate cinematics. Nevertheless, these limitations rarely undermine the central appeal because combat, progression, and character building remain strong enough to carry the experience. Having both games together is particularly valuable because it highlights how much the concept developed between installments. The original establishes Sonny's identity, world, and fundamental combat mechanics, while the sequel builds a broader and mechanically richer adventure from those foundations. Modern conveniences such as Steam achievements and cloud functionality also make returning to these games easier than revisiting their original browser versions. Steam Deck compatibility is officially categorized as Playable rather than fully Verified. Performance with the default graphics configuration is considered suitable, and the game can run successfully on SteamOS. However, handheld players should expect compromises. Some functionality is not fully accessible through the default controller configuration, touchscreen interaction or a community controller layout may occasionally be useful, and text entry can require manually opening the virtual keyboard. Some interface text may also appear small, while certain prompts can display keyboard, mouse, or non-Steam Deck controller icons. It is therefore functional on the Deck, but the experience is less seamless than a fully optimized handheld release. Sonny Legacy Collection ultimately works because it preserves more than nostalgia. Beneath the aging presentation are two genuinely engaging tactical RPGs built around an unusual protagonist, meaningful character customization, challenging encounters, and a story that gives its undead hero more personality than the premise might initially suggest. The sequel is the stronger and deeper experience, but playing the original first makes its improvements more meaningful. For veterans, it is an accessible return to a memorable chapter of browser gaming history. For newcomers, it offers an opportunity to discover why these seemingly modest RPGs developed such a lasting identity. Rating: 8/10
Considering it's a port of a legacy game, it's a job very well done. yes there are a few things, like end of text a bit cut off - but since it's almost a direct port from flash, it's all well understood. a good review, and a good piece of nostalgy being kept.
It's the games we know and love, and it's the best way to get them and be 100% positive they're working versions, also buying them supports the OG dev and Armor Games, plus it's cheap!
