I picked up Solenars Edge II: Aurora of The Seventh Dawn on a whim because it's free, and I was pleasantly surprised. This is a classic-style JRPG with a lot of heart and an ambitious, dual-narrative story. The game switches between two protagonists: Thedo, a king searching for his missing friends, and Aionis, a student transported to a magical academy. The shift in perspective keeps things fresh, and the world-building is deep. The turn-based combat is solid and reminded me of older JRPGs I loved, and the soundtrack is genuinely wonderful. A huge plus: it runs flawlessly on the Steam Deck. I installed it on a Micro SD card and had zero issues with performance or controls on SteamOS. It’s a perfect handheld RPG. My only real critique, and the reason I haven't finished it yet, is the lack of achievements. There's only one in the entire game. Having more achievements to chase would be a huge motivator to see the story through to the end. The Bottom Line: If you're a fan of story-driven JRPGs and you own a Steam Deck, you absolutely owe it to yourself to try this game. It's free, it runs great, and it has a compelling story. I just wish it had more achievements to give me that extra push to complete it.

I played the whole thing. Yes it was that good. But not in the way you'd expect. As someone who has played Solenars Edge 1 (both the rebirth version here on steam and the original version, which had the main characters joining the guild from the popular anime Fairy Tail), I had a fairly good idea what to expect in this game. And it certainly delivered in that aspect. This is a very random game in terms of game design and plot. Things happen randomly out of nowhere, big glitches that impact gameplay in huge ways, among other crazy things in this wild ride of a game where anything and everything can and will happen all at once. It's the wacky world of rpg maker games and I love it. The design of the game can get pretty whack. For example, the skills. Though many of them are obviously default rpg maker skills (which were guaranteed to suck) some skills are far more powerful than others. Take Blunt Trauma for instance. Only 10 TP cost but does way more damage than other skills of similar cost, and can cause Sleep. Amazing. Characters with that move instantly become the main DPS of the team, no questions asked. One thing I really hated (which was also mentioned by others) was the use of the wheel menu in battle. When you press the right direction key, you automatically skip the turn of the current character because that was how it worked in default rpg maker. You are supposed to press down arrow key to choose commands but with the wheel menu you would intuitively press the right arrow and end up skipping your turn instead. This was a major problem for me earlier in the game. Another problem is that some skills cost both TP and MP, but only shows the TP cost. This means that sometimes I wouldn't know which moves a character is able to use because they dont have enough MP. [STORY SPOILERS AHEAD] The game starts with some kind of post apocalyptic tone talking about a huge massacre where most of the characters from Solenars Edge 1 were killed off or disappeared before the start of the game. King Thedo and his friends Yenta and Nerine (characters from the first game) decide to go on a quest to find the ones who may have survived. Simple enough. Concurrently, a different main character in another part of the world, Aionis, gets isekai'd to a modern looking city of another world where he attends a school filled with other students capable of battle. Basically hogwarts or one of those battle high school animes. This starts out pretty cozy as Thedo's party eventually finds an airship while Aionis gets accustomed to his new school life and explores the (fairly large) modern city which comes with tons of locked buildings, a casino, a weapon shop that sells endgame equipment for cheap (lol), and a hospital which is mostly irrelevant. Seems pretty average so far. The 'fun' begins around the second half of Chapter 3 when Aionis and his fellow students get sent on a mission in a generic looking forrest (not forest) where they must activate some statues or whatever. Here I met the first couple of bosses which have an ability called Atomic Cataclysm. This is an end game AOE spell that can do upwards of 2000 dmg to all party members, with a high chance of wiping my entire team. Cue the luck-based boss fights. I think I probably died more than ten times in this one area. I dunno why I kept playing, but this is only a premonition of things to come. After finishing this mission from sheer luck, I directed Aionis to go back to his dorm and turn in for the day. Chapter 3 ends as the perspective shifts back to King Thedo in his airship in the other world. Chapter 4 has begun. Upon trying to enter the snow village (which is what he tried to do previously when the perspective switched to Aionis in Chapter 3), the game rewinded itself and put me back to the start of Chapter 3 as the perspective switched back to Aionis before he did that mission I mentioned earlier. Of course, all the flags having already been tripped, the game was basically broke at this point. At this point you might think the game is soft locked and completing it would be utterly impossible. Luckily, having thoroughly explored the world map earlier in the game I found that if King Thedo's party enters the area Aionis was previously in before he was isekai'd, the game will proceed onward without regard to the players current place in the plot. How convenient! This was the actual (and the only way) to progress in the game. Entering here, I found out that my party member Yenta supposedly already died some time prior and that they are all now about to isekai on over to where Aionis is, which is where Chapter 4 ends and the two perspectives will soon converge. The only thing is, Yenta is still in my party! Having skipped over Chapter 4 I had no awareness of the events that would have transpired in the snow village so I can only hope Chapter 4 wasnt too important to the overall plot. Chapter 5 begins as Aionis's school is under attack from the main villains and it turns out that some of the school staff and students are in league with them as well. At this point everyone is dying left and right and it was a struggle to keep people alive. JUST KIDDING. Since the game didn't think I would have Yenta in chapter 5, he basically stayed in my party permanently for the rest of the game. He's a brawler type character who can do about 2000 dmg regular attacks and has a 3-5k dmg ult. Not the strongest, but a solid character to have when most of the other units you get tended to be weak students with weak magic. On the flip side though, King Thedo ended up being 10 levels behind since Chapter 4 was completely skipped. Later he ends up getting oneshotted constantly. Unfortunately being the final chapter and the climactic point of the game, the bosses get quite difficult despite having an unintended extra party member. Expect bosses to have tons of AOE magic including the dreaded Atomic Cataclysm (which can still potentially wipe my party). Luckily the game lets you purchase items that fully revive the party which I definitely needed to get to the end. One character also had a busted ult that can take out half the bosses HP in one go so that was funny too. In a majority of these boss fights, the boss will proceed to instakill a party member via a cutscene and they are removed from the party (and the mortal coil). Other party members will then react with anger and determination until they are all killed in a similar fashion. This will happen alot for the rest of the chapter. Eventually about 90% of the cast is killed off as the last 3 characters (Aionis, King Thedo, and of course Yenta) face off against the Final Boss. The former two, being main characters, get ungodly OP weapons that do like 10 attacks per turn while Yenta was relegated to being the party's potion chucker. Towards the endgame I noticed the lack of healers in the parties I was playing as (due to so many people dying) that I just decided to spend my 300k in gold to only buy truckloads of potions and crystals (team healing items) along with the OP full team revive items. That was all the healing I would ever need. King Thedo still being 10 levels behind, had the most OP weapon by far (The Solenars Edge itself), where he does 10 crit attacks per turn that's just insane. So imagine my surprise when he, too, gets cutscene-killed by the Final Boss out of nowhere. Damn. But luckily even after he died his 10 attacks kept going, defeating the boss and finishing the game once and for all. And the handful of people who survived lived happily ever after. The end. And yes, Yenta is still in my party after all this. (P.S. In the post game credits I found out that this game was the final one in an entire series of games that I didnt play, including some SRPG studio games that I was vaguely aware of. Now I know why this felt like playing a trails game where half the time the characters are referencing other characters that I knew nothing about. Oh well.)
