This game attempts to do things that I in generally appreciate. The UI is too rudimentary however, and the game play experience just doesn't motivate me into digging deeper. If you have a lot of patience with such things, you might like it. The average modern gamer should keep away.
Not bad game
unfortunately no
This is a great idea for a game. And for the first few hours, I was having a great time with it. It's fun to talk to people, play detective, ferry passengers around, and trade cargo. I don't care about ship combat so the option to not have any was great. I was having fun making a spreadsheet of prices to figure out optimal trading routes for goods. But after awhile, I began to get really frustrated. You'll spend a lot of time waiting for people to show up places. If you're at a tiny market on an asteroid, maybe nobody shows up at all, ever, and you just have to leave and come back later. If you arrive on a small planet on a Friday night hoping to trade, tough luck -- the market doesn't open for three days and there's not much you can do but sleep and then wait out the remaining hours -- with no option to fast-forward or pass time. You can go chat with people (which becomes less interesting the more you do it) or just stare at the screen until a location opens.... then stare some more waiting to see if someone will man the front desk. I could live with all that, but what finally broke the deal for me was an inexplicable bug in my ship cargo, where no matter where I went, it would insist I was carrying water, and when I sold it, my cargo would still register as full, so I couldn't buy new stuff. I had to go back to the planet where I originally bought the water, then sell -that-, then I could buy stuff again and it showed me the right cargo in my hold... for awhile. The third time this happened, I bailed. i wish I could give a neutral recommendation because I am really on the fence with this. As it stands, I can't see myself playing it anymore -- there's just too much tedium and when you travel halfway across the system to sell something at a huge profit only to find it turned to water... I can't. For now, not recommended.
Game crashes on startup, and the URL for reporting ( forums.soltrader.net ) isn't even a valid website. Nice.
I believe the $20 price point to be a little high, but this is an interesting game.
Too many bugs. I can't even seem to deliver a package to someone I meet at his home. Maybe because he also has a package delivery mission?
When I first bought this, I liked it pretty well! It felt like it had tremendous world-building depth (and it did for the time period), and the reputation system was innovative. It felt like you could have any conversation with any character, and there were thousands of NPCs with their own potential stories. A lot has changed since then - and so this game now feels very "of its time" in a way that makes it much less interesting than it used to be.
