About

“Onii-chan, you really are a lonely person.”
“Did you lose faith in me?”
“No. I love you, onii-chan.”
Unable to bear the ugliness of the world and terrified of other people, the protagonist develops the ability to read minds.
He shuts himself away and submits a light novel he wrote, which unexpectedly wins a newcomer’s award. But the jealousy and envy that follow only deepen his distrust of the few human relationships he still has. Those around him hurt his fragile heart without even realizing it.
His only remaining comfort is his younger sister, who lives with him.
Clinging to each other just to stay alive, the two sink night after night into a twisted, unhealthy codependency.
―I keep living alone, talking about my own prejudices and cursing the world. Day after day.
I ripped off Dostoevsky, half-assed it into something modern, and turned it into a light-novels.
I mean, I tried. In my own stupid way.
Had the heroines talk about “existentialism” like it was supposed to mean something.
The gameplay is an old-school, straight-up classic visual novel. The text fills the entire screen, so read as much as you want—or just right-click to hide it and enjoy the art. That’s it. Read, click, and vibe.
Live through a gloomy, suffocating real world through an overly sensitive protagonist… then come home and savor the only happiness left in his life: the time he spends with his little sister, his one true comfort.
As the friction with the people around you keeps piling up, there’ll be moments when their petty thoughts make you feel actual murderous rage. And in those moments, you can use your mind-reading ability to drive them to suicide.
That snide bastard. That arrogant asshole. Hit them right where it hurts—right in the deep-seated insecurities they never want anyone to see—and take them out. It’s not like you’re killing them with your own hands, so you won’t get caught. The ones truly at fault are the tasteless, mindless conformists who do nothing but obey society without a shred of aesthetic sense.
…But is that really okay?
What is happiness, anyway?
And in the end—what kind of future will the protagonist and his sister walk into?
Witness it with your own eyes.

"hehe.. they call it schadenfreude" "Who do I think I am, Dostoevsky?" This game is so cringe I actually wanted to rip my eyeballs out. A sore disappointment after needy streamer.
really disappointing. theres barely anything about the sister, sahana, which makes having sister in the title a little decieving. MC seethes with hatred which normally isnt a bad thing but it just feels so one dimensional as it isnt really elaborated on other than "i can see right through people and they all suck" and it gets so annoying to read sometimes. nobody other than maybe the MC has a fleshed out storyline, which is understandable for a short VN, but i feel like theres so little that it doesnt work with the narrative of extreme hatred, what is there to hate about these characters other than "ugh that disgusting little catterpillar is jealous of me blah blah". its so painful to read. and the fact that sahana only shows up to coddle him is 🙁. beautiful artwork, though.

I did like this despite my do not recommend rating. I enjoy pretentious visual novels. But I certainly wouldn't recommend this to someone who is looking for a visual novel to read. Subahibi, which many claim to be the most pretentious visual novel out there, is my holy grail. I expected to like this visual novel due to its psychological horror and pretentiousness... but I was disappointed. If you can stand having to listen to a protagonist wallow in self-pity and spit vitriol at every opportunity, I think you can find enjoyment through what I thought were the nice aspects of the game. To start off, the intended audience is incredibly niche. It seems to be speaking to the issues that writers have as they struggle with both an ego and an abundance of self-doubt... However, this is not well-addressed in most of the routes, which makes the visual novel's themes confusing and disjointed. Igusa and Hiyakawa's routes (scenario?) had the best attempts at saying something poignant. The exemplification of envy that is brought on by success, and the disgusting ego the main character displays is a decent exploration of these ugly human emotions, but the author never really *does* anything significant with the story he seems to set up. We escalate and escalate, but never reach any satisfying climax or resolution to either of these character's arcs. In the parent's and Botan's route, it seemed more like a rant about how women are always chasing male validation and that's all they live for (???). This game in general had a looot of vitriol and hatred for women that just confused me as a reader. I know we're supposed to think that Hasuya, our MC, has a wrong take on the world, but when our only two female leads play exactly into the sexist beliefs that Hasuya has... it makes it seem like the narrative supports the idea that women are attention-seeking floozies to the very end. Dokudami was my favorite scenario and character, but I also felt he was sorely out of place. While every other character has their own struggles and self-worth or self-identity issues, Dokudami is just chilling. His route is a breath of fresh air among the oppressive routes (that, don't get me wrong, I enjoyed in my own way), and he was just an overall fun guy... but compared to the deep dive into human ugliness the other routes were attempting, Dokudami just contrasts the main character's incel energy with positive chad energy, and then they kiss. I'd rate this game a 5.5/10. It isn't good, it certainly won't be memorable for me, but I did really enjoy it and I did re-read Dokudami's scenario. This visual novel hit my feelings in certain moments, but overall it was unable to deliver. Also as everyone else said, the sister basically didn't exist. She had no distinct personality separate from our protagonist Hasuya, she may as well have been removed from the game.
not what i expected from the advertising, and way shorter too. Kind of spoilers but
there's only one route, tho there are two endings I've seen so far. There were no branching choices during the first playthrough, 2nd playthrough had one
. it's in no way a fault of the devs but I was mistaken on how this story was gonna go from seeing all the advertisements on twitter. I def was expecting more saya no uta vibes so if you wanted to play for something spooky like that it isn't the game for that. I feel bad giving it a thumbs down but i feel like somethings missing after finishing and I'm a bit disappointed. plot spoiler
i thought everyone dying would be the turning point of the story but no its basically finished by then. it just felt REALLY short. There was a lot of "hey onii chan we will become one." crap being spewed but that never actually happens in the story. Botan was called a ♥♥♥♥♥ in the twitter posts by Sahana but she barely mentioned Botan let alone disliked her. Again, IK it seems kinda ♥♥♥♥♥♥ to complain about the game not fitting my expectations but guys I swear the advertisements and trailers were leading me on
TLDR the game was too short and had very few
choices
It's exhausting. Obviously the main character is made to be seen as unlikable and pretentious on purpose, but the game's own moments of self-awareness of it doesn't feel genuine at all. It's hard not to feel like the author is just airing out his own gripes with an over-inflated ego over his past successful works.
A big fan of Nyalras previous work, as Needy Streamer Overdose impacted Japan's mental health awareness, which also birthed a lot of similar style games in this "Dark Cute style". But also the main topic of someone's mental health and how social media, online perception and expectation can drive someone to the brink. We see this all the time in real life and Ame was a great representation of modern online fame. Even though it was represented in a visual point and click style game, NSO did a great job. So going into Sister Other Paranoia I was excited to see what kind of story Nyalra would tell with this new narrative, as for most people, based on someone previous work there comes high expectation especially considering how great NSO succeeded. I will try not to make it too lengthly and fairly spoilerish free, but going into the novel I felt like I definitely over expected a lot of points of the narrative, especially Sahana's purpose as a character. As she seemed like she would be a fairly important character in the story, but she came across as another side character that was not explored or given enough depth to feel any sort of attachment as the player. Im not really a professional in writing so please take my review with a grain of salt, im really just writing my thoughts. But as a user that consumes a lot of novels, I find an importance to feel attached to characters or make the reader care for them by making them more indepth, under standing their motives or importance, and how they connect to the MC and I feel like the story really tries to accomplish that, but it is done poorly. The MC himself is also very unlikeable but hes suppose to appear that way as he is a victim of his own mind, so of course he would be pessimistic around the world around him. so you have to see his point of view through his eyes and views. The concept was great in practice, but felt like it failed to accomplish what it was trying to do and fell off slowly or losing the plot.
I don't like this game. It's lazy and feels unfinished. * This game is not reader-friendly. The text covers the whole screen, and it's really annoying to read. The text is also white, which is especially annoying because it sometimes blends into the background images. It's also hard to tell who is talking when there's a conversation between two characters. At first, I thought it was a one-line turn, but that's not always the case. There's no controls guide. I had to look up how to save because the Esc key does nothing, not even opening the main menu. I also encountered a glitch that ruined the ending cutscene, and I had to reload. * This is a short game, which is fine if the writing is actually good. It's not, though, not to mention the bad translation. I hate being treated like a stupid reader, and what I hate most is the main character reminding me of the same information every five minutes. This would be fine if the game were longer, but not in a game this short. The storytelling is bad. I don't need the MC to tell me every few seconds that everyone is jealous of him and that he wrote a book. * I don't know if a lot of people would agree with this point, but I think the art style is lazy. Using real-life photos with a filter over them as backgrounds is not good. * The OSTs are fine, but the game becomes completely silent sometimes without any story-related reason. It makes the game feel even more like an unfinished product than anything else.
I still don't understand why the little sister is the face of the game. She barely appears and does nothing. The main character is insufferable, and not in a good way. He just complains without any character development, and somehow, God saved him because of his sister's prayers. If you think that's good because it's a happy ending, then what's the point of the whole game?
Overall 4/10
