Incredibly fun retro platformer obviously inspired by the gameplay of Castlevania 2: Simon's Quest (and improving it). The game shows some very cool techniques for example in parallax scrolling and the art design is absolutely gorgeous. It's short and sweet, perfect for a rainy day or calm night. The only minor gripes I had were some translation/spelling errors (of which I am not quite sure if they were intentional considering the OG Simon's Quest) and some sound balancing issues, mainly during some of the bossfights. Stellar soundtrack btw. Get this, it's good.
If you ignore the sometimes cringe dialogues this game is an enjoyble experience. I did 100 % it in less than 4 hours and had fun doing it, except for one of the hidden achievements because I could've gotten all achievements in one playthough but I didn't know what to do for that one achievement so I had to look it up after finishing the game and start a new playthough to get that last achievement. But that was fine, no big deal.

I don't expect much from these microvania's before playing them, but they offer something that's nice to fit in my busy schedule. That being a short bit sized metroidvania experience that i can 100% in one evening. Simona's requiem mentions all these aspects in perfect clarity/honesty on the store page and they're absolutely right! The length is indeed anywhere between 2 to 3 hours, perfect for one evening. It's indeed also not difficult, which i very much appreciate for such a short one and done experience. And it's also very chill with the platforming, level design and progression with only a few small sections slightly uping the difficulty. So in a sense i got exactly what was promised which is always nice but that was to be expected, what i didn't expect though is the polish in terms of game feel, audiovisuals and especially writing. That's not to say that this is a narrative highlight or anything but the writing was clever and very comedic. It actually even got a chuckle out of me a few times which i didn't expect. The short & simple story also came full circle in a nice way towards the end, with a great final joke to boot. The visuals were clean and soundtrack was suprisingly good at times but what was most impressive is how smooth the game played. Given the slow speed you would expect it to feel sluggish but that wasn't the case at all, it actually felt really nice. I played the game in two sittings taking one break inbetween but i could've played it in one sitting. It's over before you know it but it does't leave you wanting for more, it just leaves you content you played this nice, quaint little game. Also it's perfectly reasonable to 100% in terms of achievements which is always a big plus for completionists like me! If you're looking for one evening of fun i recommend this one given the low monetary and time investment and relative quality!
There are times where a maybe button would be good to implement. This is almost one of those times. This game is pretty short...even considering you move about the speed of stop. Seriously, in this game I got lapped by a street sweeper at one point. There is a dash...but it still feels SLOW....so slow!!! You may see my time as 4.5 hours...but know that I played this while doing other tasks...so chop that about in half. And know I got all the achievements except one...that one I missed was not for finishing the game. (I got that one.) The game has some annoying platforming parts...but the area after the final boss, and the area where the lighting is poor are completely annoying. I don't mind tough jumps because it brings back good NES days....but those two areas are inexcusable. The problem is that the game is so short and empty..there isn't much to say good or bad. So why not a maybe? Because the price point is $8. You can get longer and better games for that. Get this on sale for a couple bucks....but anything more than like $2 or $3 isn't worth it.
Conclusion : c'est un bon jeu.
The music is amazing, the graphic is well done.I like the combat, the cute quotes and the story. You really need to buy it.Worth the price.
Bought this on the recent Spring sale and I got a fair amount of game for the price I paid. It's a rather short and straightforward Metroidvania, clearly paying homage to the classic Castlevania series. Even though it is non-linear, the areas themselves for the most part are pretty straight forward, with only a few branching paths leading mostly to a couple of collectibles or alternate exits. There is a map but to be honest there might just as well not be one because it only shows areas but never where you are within an area. Game speed is pretty slow compared to other, similar games I've played which is not neccessarily a bad thing but here I think it could get some boost but your movement speed is incredibly slow and even with the dash upgrade it doesn't become much faster. Speaking of dash upgrade, I got this pretty late in the game due to exploring different areas first but it should probably be the first upgrade you receive, even before the double jump. Just to make the movement a little bit faster. There's also a teleport system that let's you move around a couple of areas, but not all of them. Difficulty wise it's clearly on the easier side with most enemies being non-threatening and even most bosses are pushovers, if you have some experience with platformers. There's a couple of annoying spots - like in pretty much every game - where you have to bounce off some sort of bumpers to get to higher platforms. The input sometimes doesn't register properly so you can easily fall down and have to start over. A clear bug I've encountered a couple of times is when you fall into spikes and then you get reset just beside a platform, it just loops you in an almost endless cycle of you falling to your death without much control to counteract. Definitly a grievance for sure. Other than that I enjoyed the game for what it is, the achievements are all easy to get. Wouldn't neccessarily recommend buying at full price but for a discount certainly pick it up.
If you are looking for a more chilled out version of Castlevania, look no further. I enjoyed my time with it, but I can't see myself playing it more than once. However, it was fun and polished enough to give a recommend. My only real issue with it was the incredibly slow movement of the character, but that gets fixed once you find an item. The graphics and sound design were both quite nice and the dialogue was kinda goofy but never crossed over into cringe territory. I didn't beat it deathless on my first try, but I was able to fly through the game without much trouble. I beat the game in 1 hour and 45 mins and I only missed 2 secret items, so if I wanted to get 100% achievements, I imagine it would probably take another 20 - 30 minutes. I don't really see myself wanting to play this a second time, but I am glad I checked it out.
Not so grim reaper
Simona's Requiem is best described as a platformer with metroidvania elements that in part evokes the early Castlevania's style. However its quite neither a Castlevania nor a real metroidvania. The story is not that important, but ye snarky reaper named Simona is tasked to collect the soul of the Fisher King whose kingdom is... messed up. Undead crowd the walkways and worse critters lurk around too. The whole of the game is rather short, and there are a few gripes to be had, but overall it is a fun little experience. My gripes are: That its a bit pricey at full price for what is there. That Simona's walking speed is dreadfully slow till you get the dash. That the respawn rate for enemies is frankly way, way too high. Beyond those inconveniences though? A fun game with a nice soundtrack and some nice areas. So get it on sale if you're not 100% sure.
Musiken i spelet är på en annan nivå, ni måste släppa ett album. PS. Alla utbrott jag har fått mot bossarna va med 100% kärlek.
