Welcome to the Nexus. You died, the sandpit brought you back, and now you have a shift to finish as a scrapper. Scavenge crashed ships, cram your pack with dangerous salvage, meet odd survivors, and make it home each day through a weird desert world before the storm resets the sands and you with it.

About
Sand in your lungs. Scrap in your pack. Storm at your back.
The wreck is half buried. Wind's picking up. Your pack's almost full... but there's a sealed compartment you haven't cracked yet. Open it and you might find xenotech worth a week of runs. Or you might find nothing, and the storm catches you carrying a full pack you'll never get home.
This is the scavenger's life. A desert planet that buries everything... then reveals it again, somewhere new, for someone fast enough to find it. At its center stands the Nexus, an ancient monument that holds back the storm for a few fleeting hours each day.
You're one of many drawn here. Every morning, you venture out. Every evening, the sands reset. What you escape with is the only thing that survives.

Yesterday there was nothing here. Today, half a cargo freighter juts from the dune.
The storms reshape everything. That derelict you encountered? Gone. That cache you harvested? Deeper now... or exposed, waiting. Every run is a new map. Every run is a new chance. You learn to read the sand. You learn where wrecks cluster, where raiders camp, where the anomalies twist the air. But you never learn everything... because tomorrow, it all changes again.
Push deeper for rarer salvage. Or play it safe near the Nexus. The choice is yours. The consequences are too.

Your pack has limited slots. The component in front of you takes four.
Back home, that component could unlock a new tool... something that changes how you play forever. But your pack already has a dozen slots of scrap you spent the whole run gathering. Drop it, and that time is gone. Keep it, and you leave the component for the storm.
This is the game inside the game. Every slot is a bet. Common scrap is guaranteed value. Rare components are life-changing... if you make it back. And if you die out here, you lose almost everything except what's secured in your omnipack. How much are you willing to risk for one more slot?

That junk in your pack? It's not junk. It's potential.
Back at the Nexus, scrap becomes upgrades. A scanner that pings buried caches. Reinforced boots that let you scale dunes. A torch that cuts through sealed bulkheads... and the secrets behind them. Every piece of salvage is a choice about who you're becoming.
Some upgrades make you faster. Some make you tougher. Some open paths you didn't know existed. You'll never unlock everything in one playthrough... so what you prioritize shapes the scavenger you become. The desert gives you the pieces. You decide what to build.

Two scavengers leave the Nexus at dawn. One comes back loaded. One doesn't come back at all. Neither played the same game.
Your inventory management changes everything. Equip a cloaking device and slip past raiders like a ghost. Carry probability manipulators and bend luck in your favor when the situation turns. Strap on silt shoes and outrun the storm by seconds when you've pushed too far.
There is no "right" build. There's only the build that matches how you want to play... and the moment you realize it's not enough. Every item is a tradeoff. Every run is an idea about what matters.
The desert isn't empty. Raiders patrol the wreckage. Creatures nest in the ruins. Anomalies shimmer in the heat, warping space around them.
You can fight in this sci-fi world. But fighting isn't the point. Combat costs time and energy. Time and energy cost distance. Distance costs the chance to make it home before the storm swallows everything you're carrying. Inventory management is key to bring back everything you've worked for.
The best scavengers know when to engage, when to hide, and when to run. Sometimes you'll clear a path. Sometimes you'll slip around it. Sometimes you'll realize... too late... that you should have turned back three wrecks ago.
Preparation beats firepower. Positioning beats bravery. Knowing when to run beats everything.

The desert forgets. The people in the Nexus don't. A roguelite adventure that is new each morning.
Between runs, the Nexus is alive. Traders haggle over salvage. Scholars piece together fragments of the ships that fell. Outcasts nurse grudges. Priests offer blessings... for a price.
Story driven relationships begin to form. A favor here. A conversation there. Someone remembers you helped them once... and now they're offering information that changes your next run. But trust cuts both ways. Help the wrong faction, and doors close. Betray someone, and the Nexus remembers. In a world that resets every day, people are the only thing that persists. Choices matter!

Every night, the storm rolls in. Every morning, the desert is new.
But you remember. Your upgrades carry forward. Your knowledge carries forward. The relationships you've built, the secrets you've uncovered, the paths you've unlocked... all of it stays with you. The planet forgets. You don't.
What will you risk to escape the shifting sands?
Storm. Salvage. Stash.
7/10
– Dune vibes? You had me at sand. 🏜️ Scavenging wrecks, hoarding shiny junk, and desperately sprinting home before the storm turns me into desert furniture. The pixel art looks great, the animations are slick, and the whole thing has that delicious sci-fi wasteland charm. Spice? No. Scrap? Absolutely. Follow for sandstorms, questionable loot decisions, and games that make hoarding junk feel heroic. 🏜️🤖✨ https://store.steampowered.com/curator/42602807-Osiris-Reviews/
Summary

Beautiful art and aesthetic
Fun gameplay loop
Plenty of content and side activities
Very lively and lore-rich world

Overall
This review will be updated once the game leaves Early Access. Even though it's currently in Early Access, Shifting Sands is already a very impressive and fun game. You leave the hub, search for scrap and sell it for Credits or find other uses for it. There are many ways to play it, different types of weapons and a lot of replayability. While there is a lot to do when exploring, even the hub (the Nexus) offers a lot to do. Playing cards, taking on jobs and more sets this game apart from other roguelite games. It feels more like a life-simulation sandbox.
Gameplay
The controls are solid and combat feels smooth. Various weapon types and items allow for different gameplay styles. Things like being able to choose where to explore, how to open crates, managing time and energy add a lot of strategy, which I like a lot. Inventory management itself is also quite fun, while there are many other activities. There are even mounts and vehicles. The difficulty feels right and it's not too easy to earn money or manage your time either, which many games struggle with.
Graphics
Shifting Sands has very good-looking pixel art. Characters, the world and even the UI look amazing. Everything blends together nicely and character portraits are animated, which adds to how alive the world feels. Personally, I like how the graphics and atmosphere remind me of some SNES games, even if that might not have been intentional.
Story
You have a lot of freedom when choosing when to do things, so at first it might not feel very story-heavy, but it gets deeper over time. Characters are very entertaining and the lore is interesting with a lot of mysteries to uncover.

You know you’ve found something special when a brand new game brings back the same sense of nostalgia and discovery as classics like Fallout 2, while still remaining completely like its own thing. I’m only a couple of hours in, but the characters are already well developed and full of personality. The gameplay loop is incredibly fun, with just the right amount of challenge. I constantly find myself wanting to head back out into the sands, see what’s waiting over the next dune, and find that next upgrade for my gear. Speaking of gear, this game understands what made loot feel so exciting in Diablo 2. The items and upgrades you find feel important and personal, not like the endless slot machine drops of Diablo 3 and 4. When you discover something good, it actually feels meaningful. I’m absolutely loving this game so far! On top of everything else, the development team has been SUPER responsive to feedback and is already working hard to polish the experience as quickly as possible. I can’t wait to explore more, and I’m genuinely excited to see where this game goes. If any of this sounds like your kind of game, give it a shot. This one feels special!
It's def early access but it has a ton of potential and is already pretty fun
For early access seems super solid with crazy potential. Looking forward to see where this game goes! I mean I'm no expert with these games but could have fooled me this is just a small team. Already looks like a super strong indie game. A little bit of exposure and I think it will explode!
TLDR: Great dev team, love the game. ****EDIT: They hot fixed 98% of the crashes the day after my review! Still on my second playthrough after I got soft-locked out, which I don't mind at all since looting/progression is my vibe. **** I DO say $20 is worth supporting the Dev team. Don't get me wrong, this is EXACTLY the genre that tickles my loot-goblin side. The management and puzzle placement of my inventory thinking "Tools vs More room to cram loot" keeps me feeling like an actual survivor. It helps the world is fleshed out enough to make me enjoy exploring. NEGATIVES!!!!! (EDIT: ALL THESE WERE FIXED THE DAY AFTER THIS REVIEW) This game WILL crash. I'm currently soft locked out and will probably have to start a new save file. Bugs are rampant, you will see at least one if not more. Equipment disappear then reappear at random times, the vehicles and companions you bring along with you do the same. POSITIVES!!! LOOT. INVENTORY SYNERGY AND UPGRADES. TOOL UPGRADES. CRAFTING. Of course there's more charm than this, but I'm hoping to rewrite this review soon. (Devs please fix this game, you're already so responsive on Discord.) I love this game already, I hope to see it do well.
Very fun and addicting gameplay loop. There is a lot of cool equipment and upgrades to use. I really enjoy it and look forward to see what's next for the game! I will say, I experience a decent amount of crashing when moving to an adjacent tile on the map, which I have mitigated by taking a purely straight path which works. Seems the dev is aware of it based on a recent hotfix/post but figured I'd mention that here. Will update review when fixed.
Very fun game, lots of interesting mechanics, world building and art direction. Early access so is a tad buggy with some crashes but the Devs are super responsive. Highly recommend for those who enjoy rogue-lites and extraction looters.
Shifting Sands feels like Fallout collided with your favorite side-scrolling adventure in all the right ways. It’s got a killer mix of exploration, scavenging, strange characters, intense fights, and genuinely funny moments that catch you off guard. One minute you’re carefully planning your next move, and the next everything has gone completely sideways and you’re just trying to survive the chaos. It has that perfect balance of tension and humor while keeping you locked into that “just one more run” feeling. I haven’t stayed up playing a game until 2 AM in forever, but Shifting Sands has me hooked. If you like weird worlds, good laughs, intense moments, and a little wasteland insanity, this is exactly the kind of game you’re looking for.
