i'm S.O.R.N.ing it
S.O.R.N. is a focused third-person mecha action shooter built around the straightforward pleasure of piloting a heavily armed machine and moving through combat at surprising speed. Developed and published by Sentinel Games, it puts players in the role of J-12, a mech pilot employed by the private military company Haven. What begins as a combat-oriented assignment develops into a search through Haven's facilities, where J-12 encounters connections to the past and begins uncovering questions surrounding the organization. The narrative gives the action a sense of purpose without allowing lengthy exposition to overwhelm the game's central attraction: fast mechanized combat. One of the most immediately appealing aspects is movement. Despite controlling a sizable machine, the player is not restricted to slowly marching between targets. Gliding, flying, and rapid dashing provide considerable freedom during encounters, making positioning almost as important as raw firepower. Players can quickly close the distance, retreat from dangerous situations, reposition around groups, or take advantage of vertical space. Automatic targeting complements this approach by reducing the need for constant precision aiming. The result is an arcade-oriented combat system where attention can remain on movement, weapon selection, enemy threats, and survival rather than wrestling with complicated targeting controls. J-12 carries weapons in both hands and also has access to missiles and melee attacks. This gives battles a satisfying sense of versatility, especially when ranged attacks are combined with aggressive movement. Players can bombard enemies while maneuvering around the battlefield, dash toward vulnerable targets, or use close-range attacks when opponents get within striking distance. The different offensive options help prevent combat from becoming a simple matter of holding down one trigger until everything disappears. The six available weapons provide recognizable but meaningfully different combat styles. The minigun specializes in sustained fire and generous ammunition capacity, making it useful when constant pressure matters. The cannon delivers powerful projectiles with a smaller capacity, while the laser offers continuous concentrated damage. The shotgun naturally favors close-range aggression and can produce substantial burst damage when used at the proper distance. The railgun introduces a charging mechanic and piercing capability, rewarding careful positioning and timing. The pistol also features charged attacks, including an additional timing element that can significantly increase damage when executed correctly. Because these weapons behave differently, experimenting with combinations becomes part of the enjoyment rather than simply choosing whichever firearm has the largest numerical damage value. Customization strengthens this experimentation. There are 15 interchangeable mech parts affecting attributes such as hull strength, speed, energy, and melee performance. These components allow players to shape J-12 around a preferred approach instead of remaining locked into one universal configuration. Someone interested in aggressive mobility can prioritize speed, while another player may favor greater survivability or improved close-range effectiveness. Combining these components with different weapon pairings adds a modest but worthwhile layer of build creation. Full color customization is another welcome inclusion, providing visual personalization alongside mechanical changes. The campaign is deliberately compact, consisting of three cinematic campaign missions alongside additional side content. This is important when considering the overall experience because S.O.R.N. is not attempting to provide an enormous open world or dozens of hours of progression. Its design is much closer to a concentrated independent action game that introduces its mechanics, provides opportunities to customize the mech, and sends players through a series of combat situations tied together by a science-fiction storyline. Fully voiced cinematics help strengthen the presentation and give J-12's investigation more character than a purely arcade-style mission structure would provide. That smaller scale is also the game's most noticeable limitation. Six weapons and 15 mech components create enough combinations to encourage experimentation, but the systems could support considerably more content. Additional missions, enemy varieties, environments, weapons, bosses, and components would give players more reasons to continue refining their builds. Those who particularly enjoy the movement and combat may therefore find themselves wishing the campaign offered a larger playground. Still, the compact structure also minimizes unnecessary padding and makes the experience approachable for players who want mecha action without committing to an enormous campaign. The presentation complements the gameplay with a stylized science-fiction atmosphere centered on machines, industrial environments, futuristic weaponry, and the secrets surrounding Haven. Rather than pursuing complicated simulation, the game emphasizes readability and immediacy. This accessibility should benefit newcomers to mecha games, as automatic targeting and understandable weapon archetypes reduce the learning barrier while movement and equipment choices provide enough depth to keep battles engaging. Steam Deck compatibility is less certain. S.O.R.N. does not have a clearly established official Steam Deck Verified or Playable designation, so it is best treated as unverified rather than assuming complete handheld support. The action-oriented controls appear naturally suited to a controller, but Steam Deck users should be prepared for possible compatibility, performance, interface, or configuration issues until an official compatibility assessment becomes available. Its lack of a formal Deck rating should therefore be considered by anyone primarily intending to play on Valve's handheld. Overall, S.O.R.N. delivers an enjoyable interpretation of fast-paced mech combat by combining flight, gliding, dashing, automatic targeting, dual weapons, missiles, melee attacks, and configurable machine components. Its greatest strength is how quickly it lets players experience the fantasy of controlling a mobile weapons platform without burying that fantasy beneath excessive complexity. The limited campaign prevents the mechanics from reaching their full potential, yet the available content demonstrates a solid foundation and offers plenty of immediate mechanical satisfaction. For players interested in compact, accessible, customization-driven mecha action, it is an appealing experience whose strongest ideas leave considerable room for expansion. Rating: 7/10
