Runescape Dragonwilds is a modern take on the same runescape formula, with its humor and wit, while being able to still be serious, difficult, tragic and heartfelt at times. I am enjoying it a lot, but it does need some quality of life improvement around how crafting experience is earned, and the building system does not feel consistent. It could explain its mechanics better too.
Great open world game with plenty of interesting plots and characters. Play if you like farming, crafting, and material gathering.
I wasn't expecting to get this addicted honestly. The combat is whatever to me. I get my ass kicked more than I'd like to admit, but you can cheese a lot of enemies if you use the terrain or just get a little creative, so it never really bothered me. The reason I've dumped so many hours into this game is everything else. Building is so much fun. I'll hop on thinking I'm just gonna add one room to my house, then next thing I know I've been playing for three hours because I decided I needed a bigger storage area... then a farm... then another building for crafting. The farming and fishing are probably my favorite parts. I can waste way too much time just fishing or coming back to harvest everything before heading back out. It's weirdly relaxing. It's still Early Access (with the release around the corner 1.0 here we come) and there's plenty they can build on, but I'm already hooked. I'm looking forward to seeing what they add next.
great game, it feels like single player mmo, i love it
As someone who started their Runescape journey in 2002 and seeing the unfortunate downfall of the game during 2012 i was very sceptical of buying Dragonwilds. Looking at the content from release day it seemed like yet another copy and paste sandbox survival craft with an added Runescape lore. A repeated game loop with not much to offer in comparison to other titles within its genre. Even starting my journey on Dragonwilds i was afraid that all it had to offer was a repetitive game loop and i struggled to see the vision. After 60 hours of gameplay i can happily say i was wrong. This is the first game that has scratched the itch I've not been able to scratch. This is the future of Runescape. Things that really stood out to me. - A open world full of life. Unlike most survival crafts where 75% of the world is vacant and you spend majority of your time walking the abyss. Dragonwilds has enemies, treasures and other hidden gems scattered through out. I never felt like it was a walking simulator. - Monsters + Enemies - Every monster in Dragonwilds feels unique with their own combat styles and behaviours. Though the RPG element may make certain progression monsters repetitive in the sense of variety. - Quests. The quests are fun, have a good story line to them and full of puzzles and riddles. Just like the OG game. - Building. Though not as nice as games like Rust or 7d2d the building is expansive and things click together with ease. A slight incline on a hill will not building block you from completing your masterpiece - Majority of skills actually serve a purpose. Unlike the state of OSRS non combat skills serve a major purpose in how your gameplay will go. Most skills are useful to progressing through Dragonwilds and not just some useless afk jank to do when you are bored. - Variety. There are endless ways to play which aren't limited to your characters build. You can pick up and drop skills at any point depending on how you wish to progress. You can build castles, fight bosses, do some peaceful fishing or go hunting for treasure. This makes the game loop fun. However there's still much room for improvement. - More rare drop tables for monsters. It seems limited in the rare items you can achieve and even the ones available seem too easy to obtain (1/20 drop rates etc) it would be nice to see more included in the drop tables of monsters. Especially the bosses and demi bosses. - No variety in "rare" items. Most of the rare drop items are just cosmetic making the majority of them feel pointless and not worth grinding for. - Combat. Not the worst, not the best. Average. - Lack of skill tree progression in certain skills. Some skills feel "empty" once reaching mid level with no extra bonus/benefits from levelling them up any further. - All in all I'd highly recommend Dragonwilds to any Runescape or former Runescape player and I'd say 60-70% of non RS players would enjoy also and look forward to seeing future content. I'll also add that UNLIKE OSRS Jagex appear to be listening to the player base making updates actually something to look forward to rather than slowly destroying the game. Keep it up Jagex and please don't f*** us again.
