The visuals and audio are calming but my recorded playtime Isn't accurate to how much I actually played. I usually lose interest in these kinds of games 30 minutes at most into playing.
Return. is a very short platformer built around a simple idea. I am guiding a lost soul back to its home, and the whole game is focused on getting through the small world in front of me. The controls are extremely basic, with the arrow keys used for movement, Z for jumping and R for restarting. That simplicity works well because I can understand everything almost immediately and spend my time actually playing instead of learning a complicated system. What I like most is the atmosphere. The pixel art has a cute but slightly strange look to it, and the game manages to feel more emotional than I would expect from something this small. The darker elements give the journey a little more personality, while the soundtrack helps make the short adventure feel more memorable. I also like that the game does not throw loads of unnecessary mechanics at me. It has one clear objective and sticks to it. The platforming itself is simple, but there are still moments where I need to pay attention to my movement and timing. The game is not trying to become a huge precision platformer, and I think that is the right choice. I can make mistakes, restart quickly and try the section again without having to go through a long loading screen or replay a massive amount of content. That makes the difficulty feel manageable even when a particular section catches me out. The biggest weakness is obviously the length. Return. is intentionally a very short experience, and once I have reached the end there is not a huge amount left for me to do. I actually think the short length suits the story because stretching the idea into several hours would probably make it lose some of its impact, but it still limits how highly I can rate it. I am judging it more like a small atmospheric experience than a full platforming adventure. I also think the simplicity can work against it after the initial experience. There are no large progression systems, character upgrades or complicated puzzles to keep me experimenting for a long time. Once I understand the movement, I am mostly focused on reaching the end. That is not really a problem when I know what kind of game I am getting, but it means there is not much reason for me to keep playing once I have finished the journey. What helps is that the game is free to play and takes almost no commitment to try. It feels like something I can sit down with for a short while and finish without needing to dedicate a whole evening to it. I appreciate games like that when they have a clear identity, and Return. definitely has one. The combination of simple platforming, pixel art, music and its little emotional story gives it more character than the basic mechanics would suggest. Overall, Return. is a small game that knows exactly what it wants to be. I like the atmosphere, straightforward controls and simple journey, and I think the short length actually helps the experience avoid becoming repetitive. At the same time, there is not enough gameplay here for me to put it alongside my higher rated platformers, and once I finish it there is very little left to discover. Still, as a short free experience with a bit of charm and emotion behind it, I think it is worth playing. Rating: 6.8/10
While the game is currently marked as Unplayable, from what I've tested, the game seems playable from Start to End on Steam Deck once you setup controls for the game. Cute little game, but short if you've played a 2D Platformer before.
Интересно
