A Surprisingly Great 2.5D Experience :D
I just finished REPLACED, and honestly, what a game it was! :D I really enjoyed it. Loved the story and the way the main character slowly learns about humans and learns about feelings. The ending was really interesting too, ngl. The music is also really good, and even though it's a 2.5D game, I genuinely enjoyed pretty much every part of it. The combat is really cool as well, especially some of the brutal finishing animations. 😂 Overall, I really enjoyed my time with it and would definitely recommend giving it a try if you're into this kind of game! :D
I really wanted to like this game because the visuals are brilliant. This pixelated, cyberpunkish, 2.5D aesthetic is beautiful, detailed, cinematic, and actually somewhat novel. I don't know of any other game that bridges the 2D and 3D in such a fluid and seamless manner, and it lends itself to some really cool moments where it feels like this 2D game suddenly comes alive and pulls out a whole another dimension out of the hat, revealing that you've actually been watching a movie all along. The problem is that everything else about the game is not as masterful as the graphics. I was not a fan of the fighting system. I read somewhere that it is in the style of Arkham Knight, but 2D, so it's supposedly a solid foundation, but I don't find brawler type of battles engaging, and nothing about the mechanics convinced me otherwise. The platforming feels "tokenish", as in "here's the token challenging sequence we had to throw in here to justify calling it a platformer, when in reality we would rather focus on letting you walk around and sight seeing the setting". The game does feel a bit like a walking simulator at times, at least in the first 2 hours. Maybe the fighting and platforming evolves in the later stages of the game, but I decided that I wasn't interested in finding out, and it actually wasn't the fighting or the platforming that made me call it quits. It was the writing. The writing and world building just isn't great. The world building is composed entirely of cyberpunk cliches, while somehow being a weaker version of those cliches. Literally everything in the world building is been-here-done-that-better-elsewhere. The writing itself- the dialogue, the text entries you find- it's all quite bland. Text entries feel like in-your-face exposition pieces, not like real articles you might find somewhere, the dialogue is amateurish, and I just felt like there is nothing of value for me to discover by exploring that world. I can already see it's the spiritual successor of Blade Runner if Blade Runner was some film student's graduation project. Overall, I know that many people will love this game just for the visuals, but I really didn't want explore any of it further, so I got a refund, and that means I give it a thumbs down, even though there is enough to love about this game.
As much as I adore the art style and presentation, I can't give this game a positive review, even though I do like it and got a friend a copy. The platforming sections quickly become annoying, repetitive, tedious, and ultimately feel like a time sink in combination with constantly trying to figure out the next unconventional step to proceed the level. The combat sections are spectacular. If you like Arkham style combat you will like this. The overall presentation and content is really good, but again, I think the platforming mechanics are hindered by the artstyle and player animations: It was hard to tell the approximate reach of my player character when calculating precise jumps and vaults while being hunted by enemy sentries. The platforming sections take all the momentum out of every level wherever they appear, and they end up taking more time than the puzzle sections. If you can overlook how irritating platforming can be here then this is definitely worth $15-$20 Overall, I think this game deserves a positive review, but from personal play history I found the platforming lacking, even when put on the yellow painted ledge crutches.
yes, graphics and visuals are stunning. it definitely nails the cyberpunk feeling and the world it creates is really great BUT that is game only strong point. Movement clumsy (the 2.5 platforming is sometimes tedious and annoying), fighting is extremely repetitive (some platforming, reach an area, fight and rinse and repeat). During the game you get new features and functionalities but even then it gets boring to the point that even though the visuals are amazing i found myself skipping cutscenes to get to the end of the game. I was so close to drop the game before the end.
Hold right for okay 2.5D cyberpunk action
Rating: B To figure out if this game is for you, just ask yourself the following questions: - Do YOU like holding right (or left) for extended periods of time (20+ seconds)? - Do you like looking at pixelated moody 2.5D post-apocalyptic industrial landscapes (that you can't fully explore) while holding left/right for extended periods of time? - Do you like linear puzzle/platforming? - Do you like beat-em-up style action (with parry mechanics) after long periods of holding right/left and doing some linear puzzle-platforming while looking at pixelated moody 2.5D post-apocalyptic/cyberpunk industrial landscapes that you can't fully explore? If you answered YES to any of those questions. You might enjoy this game! For me this is one of those cases of "it's fine for an indie game". They did what they could within a specific scope. The movement is slow, which is why you end up holding left/right for long periods of time. There are a few interesting errands in the town area with interesting side characters. Some of the platforming early and mid game isn't signaled very well, since you can't interact with most of what you see. The action is what you would expect from a beat-em-up with parry mechanics (such as the Arkham games), except in 2D! The story is also pretty typical from a post-apocalyptic/dystopian sci-fi/cyberpunk standpoint. Rating: B
KI im Körper eines Menschen ? Ein Klassiker
