Let me preface this with a few tidbits: I am playing alone. I am not a big "souls-like" fan. I wanted to give my impressions before the "refund window" closed. And for that, I can't recommend it. The "souls-like" is fairly earned and I can't help but feel that this would be far less irritating if I had another person or two to run with. Perhaps, with a bit more time in; I'd like it. It was that way for me with Witchfire...which is why I tried this in the first place. However, Witchfire was clearly built from the ground up for solo play. I don't get that feeling here. In fact, I'm not sure "solo" was even legitimately considered in the making of this game. I haven't exactly dug the story and the characters aren't really "investing" me...which is another strike against it. It just all smacks of "online-centric". Which, to that end, I should also mention I had two times in my gameplay where I lost connection. Not a problem for "solo me". Still, for a co-op player....that's not great news. Now, if you have people you run with and/or you dig the "souls-like" genre...I can say there is a really solid game here and probably a lot of fun. If any of this applies to you, feel free to ignore the downvote. In fact, I'd say I'd actually recommend it in that instance. The combat, though irritating to me, is pretty tight. Nothing has felt "insurmountable". The gunplay is decent. The stages are sufficiently "complex" without being "labyrinthine". There are surprises and moments of "terror" as you find yourself getting swarmed. The loot drops have felt rewarding.....ish. I played two quick characters, giving about an hour to each. It seems like the "Hunter" is not especially good for solo where the "Medic" felt more doable. Again, perhaps some more gameplay will address this; but, within the refund window....these are my impressions. Perhaps I should have chosen a different character; but, I tend to play those two class-types in most of my games. For the price, I can't hate on it too much. It was 15 bucks for everything and the game is well-made. Perhaps, I'll drop a few more hours and try to push through. I'm mostly stuck with it now, anyway. However, if I had known then what I know now....I probably would have saved that 15 to go toward something different. Something more my speed. I'll be the first to change this review if my mind changes; but at the 2 hour mark....this hasn't been especially great for me. In fact, it's been rather irritating.....arguably what the entire "souls-like" genre is geared toward.
Somebody got paid money to write for this game.
So I spent about 20 hours developing my melee-tank build and my buddy going full summoner. Both builds are useless for the end boss and we had to re-spec our classes. Absolute garbage of a boss design, favoring range builds and not respecting the player's time! Not to mention how many other bosses in the world are also designed to not allow melee-centered builds like the one I was making. There were events that we found, that were rare to occur but because the game doesn't explain ♥♥♥♥ we didn't know what to do. One example is when we killed a bug that was blocking a water pipe in a big room and we thought that it's going to fill-up after some time - well it didn't and we moved on, later to find that we needed to wait 90 minutes for it to fill up so we can get a weapon. Who in their right mind thought of that?! I am not waiting 90 minutes, what a crap?!? And that's just the tip, there are many more absurd examples where content is locked behind some weird "puzzles". The story is like a pile of crap sprinkled with suger powder, in it's core is ♥♥♥♥ with cringy writing. All the dialogue hints about female empowerment and everyone else must stay quiet while the boss-girls are talking. All the females talk like what the woke writers think a "manly man" is. Garbage writing and dialogues since the first minute throughout the game. Women can be strong without sounding like men and being annoying; Men can be vulnerable and caring without sounding weak and pathetic. But it takes talent to write that. I was looking forward to exploring more content, doing the adventures, enjoying the randomness and buying the DLCs. But after having to develop a new class from scratch just so I can complete the game was the last drop that changed my mind. I regret buying this game even though it was on sale. What a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ execution of good ideas. What a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ and cringy writing. Horrible experience and I am glad I finished it so I don't have to go back to it.
Two friends and yours truly got into a 3 days marathon to do everything in the game, we ended up as brothers in arms, haven't had this feeling since Tales of Symphonia (IYKYK)
