Rebel Galaxy

This was a fun little game from a smaller dev studio. The story felt a bit short, but I still enjoyed it. The naval-style space combat is quite fun once you work out how everything functions and how to play optimally depending on your loadout and ship class. I spent most of the game in a nimble little destroyer taking on much larger foes and winning because I had superior tactics and equipment. The RPG elements are fairly muted, so I don't know why this game is listed as an 'RPG' on the store. Plus, its age does show a bit in the graphics and storywriting, but that means even a low-to-mid tier gaming PC nowadays should run the game perfectly fine. It is a fun little sci-fi open world adventure game and I would recommend it, especially if on sale.

[h3]A Unique, Gloriously Flawed Space Shooter[/h3] Rebel Galaxy is an arcade-like space shooter that models its space firefights on naval combat. Your ship does not move up or down in combat (and neither to other large "Capital" class ships), and a lot of the firefights boil down to maneuvering alongside another ship to fire your broadside cannons to devastating effect. You fend off adversaries with a combination of lasers turrets, missiles, mines, deflector shields, emp blasts, pulse cannons, and so on. This game has some significant flaws. To name a few, there isn't enough variety in missions, the storyline is pretty mediocre, your pilot has not skill tree to upgrade or any personality or other presence of note (your ship is practically the protagonist of the story), and random encounters in the overworld occur too frequently and have little variety. But there are also a lot of things the game does right. You can trade in any weapon or ship for credits equivalent to its value, which means that swapping ships and weapons is super easy and never penalizes you in the long term. The soundtrack is an absolute blast and adds tremendously to the space western aesthetic the game aims for. There are a lot of different ships and possible loadouts. You autosave at every station you dock at, so deaths are rarely overly penalizing. But more than anything, the game has an organic unity that causes it to rise above the sum of its parts. This is a 7/10 game, but when the music is cranking and you're in a chaotic firefight where the outcome is uncertain, it sometimes hits like a 10/10. It sometimes achieves a level of immersion and enjoyment that I rarely feel even in games that are objectively better. t's a space game unlike anything I've ever played, and at the modest asking price of $20, it's easy for me to recommend it to other fans of space shooters or space games in general. You will know within the initial 2 hours whether this game is up your alley, so it's not a risky purchase. On a decent discount, this is a no-brainer pickup.

It took a bit for this to grow on me, but grow it eventually did. I only really had the Starpoint Gemini games to compare it to, and it was missing some of the quality of life features id expected. The naval broadside combat was engaging though, and money felt alot easier to come by once i got used to the economic system. Story's pretty small, but its not bad. Overall I enjoyed it, though probably not enough to play again.

A very fun game. Simple but addictive. there are some detail touch the spot. I love it allows you to customize your music. I loaded my homeworld sound track and the vibe becomes different instantly. Sometimes I really think I'm playing a homeworld game.

This game is hard. Combat is up to how you build your ship. Like do you want more turrets or do you want more broadside cannons? Personally I go more turrets and fewer broadside cannons, but my broadsides are the plasma based. Which means greater range than the standard projectile ones, but slower firing rate. That's the turrets come in. They handle the fast moving and small ship while I can focus the broadsides on the big ships and the flak cannons are ALWAYS firing. That aids with handling enemy missiles and small ships. Highly recommend if you want to be a space cowboy. It is grindy and I recommend taking breaks every two hours cause it can become boring staring into space.
