Came for the Punihi, stayed for the Loader.
Solid straightforward mech builder and brawler. Your teammates are useful and not annoying. Lots of customisation, though there's often an 'obviously' best item in each class that makes the others somewhat obsolete. Arena battles are always 3v3, missions are a bit more varied with waves of weaker drone enemies and occasional giant bosses. Not the deepest game but very good at what it does.
Very fun game with a lot of customization
cute things with guns and I got 100% on it
Core Gameplay is very fun. UI/UX need to be polished, but overall definitely a fun experience.
The game is very short but then it *is* an early access I suppose. So I feel obliged to cut it some slack. Its current state is pretty bare bones as I write this review. There's no real plot. I never used the npc hireling's at all because I preferred my own party. I would have felt bad abandoning one that I'd named, dressed, and painted. There are two game modes: Arena where you fight other teams of mechs and Mission where you fight hordes of trash mobs (and occasionally a boss.) Missions are a little braindead. If the goal is just to destroy the enemies you can use whatever you want but the objective based missions that require you to defend a target demand meta gaming. I found that three Punihi's armed with double gatling guns was the way to go. A little boring but the game throws so many trash mobs at you that the huge clip of ammo is, frankly, required. In my opinion. The reload times on most weapons just can't cope with so many enemies at once even if your accuracy is perfect. While there's certainly room for horde based missions I think the game would be much improved if there were fewer enemies but they had more sophisticated tactics than just mindlessly rushing you. The "Runner" AI just circles the arena and that's as close as you can get to a non-lemming. The flying drones should zip back and forth to dodge incoming fire, the shield roombas should stay in front of other units, etc. As it stands, there's no reason for the player to rely on anything except the biggest clip of ammo possible. Not that dumb musclehead gameplay can't be enjoyable but I found myself wishing for reasons to use other weapons. The Arena is where the game really shines as it does reward different playstyles. To a degree. You *can* just run dual gatling guns but melee Punihi's are capable of out-DPSing them and some of the hyper speedy Punihi's might be difficult to maintain a consistent bead on. I was surprised and amused by some of the foul mouthed dialogue lines that the cute little creatures say, but the text boxes pop up and are gone so quickly I didn't always get to read them as I was usually focused on aiming. Obviously you probably don't want to obscure the screen unnecessarily but I'd like it if the text boxes stuck around a little longer. Overall I enjoyed the game for what it was. It's standing in the shadows of much more big budget mecha games and I think it really needs to develop a more distinct personality to stand out. Leaning into the cuteness and comedy is probably its greatest strength. Adding sillier weapons, missions based on silly motivations, and cracking more jokes can only help its appeal. Other mecha games often take themselves very seriously. This game doesn't have to and it should make the most of it. Whatever story this game eventually has on release: I think it should be as ridiculous as possible. Perhaps even deliberately parodying other mecha game plotlines. Let's be clear: I like the game. Even though I am giving it a thumb's down it is not meant as an insult. Only an honest answer to the question "Would I tell a friend to play it?" and the answer to that question is "No." Not in its current state anyway. There just isn't enough content. I hope the developers add more in the future.
