I have been learning pixel art off and on over the past year and Pixelorama has been a very fun tool to use! It has some really nice Preference settings that I have used to customize my work screen and importing color palettes is very easy. I haven't gotten to try the animation tools yet but as I progress with my learning I am very excited to use those as well. I highly recommend this tool for anyone looking to learn pixel art!
Great Tool!
Pixelorama demonstrates how far open-source software has come in recent years. Developed and published by Orama Interactive, this pixel art editor arrives on Steam with an ambitious goal: to serve as an all-in-one workspace for artists, animators, and indie developers. Instead of competing directly with broad image editing suites, Pixelorama focuses entirely on the needs of pixel creators, delivering a feature-rich experience that feels carefully tailored to retro art production. Its open-source foundation is one of its biggest selling points, but the sheer breadth of its capabilities ensures that it appeals to more than just enthusiasts looking for a free alternative. The application shines immediately through its intuitive yet customizable workflow. Artists can assign tools to different mouse buttons, rearrange interface elements, and make use of a substantial collection of drawing and editing options. Brushes, color palettes, clipping masks, selection tools, and image effects are all present, allowing users to build everything from simple sprites to elaborate scenes. The software's non-destructive effects system is especially useful, giving creators the freedom to add outlines, shadows, gradients, and color adjustments without permanently altering their work. This flexibility encourages experimentation, which is often essential in creative projects. Animation is another major highlight. Pixelorama treats animation as a central component rather than an optional add-on, featuring a comprehensive timeline with support for layers, frames, onion skinning, and audio synchronization. The ability to preview animations while continuing to draw makes the creative process feel smooth and uninterrupted. Export options are equally generous, supporting animated GIFs, APNG files, spritesheets, and traditional image formats. These features make the software particularly attractive to indie game developers who need to produce animated assets efficiently without relying on multiple programs. Perhaps the most impressive aspect of Pixelorama is its dedication to pixel-perfect tools. Specialized scaling algorithms and precision drawing options ensure that artwork retains its intended appearance even when manipulated. The inclusion of indexed color mode will be appreciated by artists aiming for authentic retro aesthetics, while tilemap support significantly expands the software's utility. Users can create rectangular, isometric, and hexagonal tilesets, making Pixelorama a practical choice for anyone designing environments for 2D games. Combined with grid customization and tile mode previews, the editor becomes an effective production tool rather than merely a digital sketchpad. Pixelorama's open-source nature also contributes to its appeal. Built with the Godot Engine and maintained through community involvement, the software benefits from regular updates and a passionate user base. Features such as autosave, crash recovery, and broad platform support add another layer of convenience, ensuring that projects remain secure and accessible. The program's availability across multiple operating systems further reinforces its commitment to accessibility, allowing creators to work regardless of their preferred platform. That said, Pixelorama is not entirely flawless. While its feature list is extensive, some aspects of the interface can feel dense for first-time users, especially those unfamiliar with pixel art terminology. Certain workflows lack the polish found in long-established commercial competitors, and newcomers may need time to fully understand the software's deeper systems. However, these issues are relatively minor and are offset by the continuous improvements delivered through active development. In the end, Pixelorama succeeds by understanding exactly what it wants to be. It is a focused, capable, and surprisingly comprehensive pixel art editor that offers tremendous value for artists and developers alike. Whether creating character sprites, animating scenes, or building tilesets for an indie game, users will find a toolset that consistently delivers. Orama Interactive has created an application that not only honors the traditions of pixel art but also modernizes the process with thoughtful features and excellent flexibility. Rating: 8/10
