Pet Street Story is a story rich pixel art simulation time management RPG with card battler elements, developed and published by 小鱼应急会. You can pick your preferred difficulty level, and the game includes a total of 39 Steam achievements for you to collect.
The background story goes like this. The street where you live was once a bustling popular tourist spot. Sadly the river became polluted, visitor numbers dropped year after year, and Pet Street slowly fell into desolation. The community committee raised large funds for river remediation work, yet progress moved very slowly. It would take many years before the water quality could see meaningful improvement. Faced with a severe financial crisis, local residents had no option but to sell off North Street and rebuild it as a modern commercial district to bring in more income. One day you discover a goldfish swimming inside the polluted river. You bring it home and nurse it carefully. In this game you play as Xiao Li, an adorable pink haired girl with twin braids wearing a red qipao. She was originally that goldfish, who magically transformed into human form. To repay you for saving her, Xiao Li decides to lend you a hand running the fish shop you inherited from your grandparents. Inside the fish shop you may purchase fish, raise them inside aquariums, join fish tournaments, breed new fish varieties, and sell stock to earn profits. To seek out potential customers you take part in card battles. The mechanic works by entering the customer’s mental world. Once you break through their psychological barriers, they will grow interested in your fish shop.
Beyond managing your fish shop, there is tons of extra content to explore. Besides progressing through the chapter based main story, you can take on many different activities. Available part time jobs include sorting bookshelves at the library, restocking shelves at the convenience store, arranging fresh flowers, cleaning birdcages, feeding pet cats and dogs with their favourite brand of food, bathing pets that need washing, and gathering animal droppings to make fertilizer. You can also deliver parcels or cook food at the maid cafe. You can attend classes, watch movies and read books in the library to raise your character skills. You can visit the flea market and play arcade minigames. Early on you are able to buy a skateboard so you can travel faster than ordinary walking speed. A wide selection of outfits for Xiao Li and home furniture are available for purchase. You can run farm plots up on the rooftop.
The game contains fun parodies referencing real life Chinese culture. You will spot familiar snacks and drinks sold inside China supermarkets and vending machines. There is even a Crazy Thursday event inspired by KFC you can host at your fish shop to draw in more shoppers. You may give gifts to local neighbours to raise your favourability with them.
This game features gorgeous finely detailed pixel art for locations, goods, characters and stunning CG illustrations which I really adore. Characters and NPCs have smooth fluid animations, paired with soothing relaxing background music. Unfortunatelly, currently this game is available in Chinese language only.
