Perseverance: Part 1 is a story-driven horror visual novel that approaches its unsettling premise through personal drama rather than immediately overwhelming the player with monsters, violence, or supernatural spectacle. Developed by Titanite Novels and Titanite Games S.A. and published by Feardemic, it acts as the opening installment of a larger narrative. Its greatest strength is the gradual transformation of an apparently ordinary small-town story into something much more disturbing. The relatively short runtime means this is clearly an introductory chapter, but it establishes enough mystery and character conflict to make its world worth exploring. The central character, Jack Cutter, is an ordinary family man living in Grey Ville. His life is already complicated before the primary horror plot begins, particularly because his family relationships are under considerable pressure. This provides the story with an emotional foundation beyond simple survival. Jack is not introduced as an unstoppable hero prepared for catastrophe; instead, he is someone attempting to deal with personal responsibilities while circumstances around him become increasingly dangerous. This makes his vulnerability an important part of the experience and gives the player opportunities to determine how he behaves when confronted by difficult situations. Grey Ville is an appropriately uneasy setting. The nearby military facility has generated rumors and suspicion, giving the town an underlying sense that something is wrong even before the situation deteriorates. When an experiment at the facility goes disastrously wrong and the area is placed under quarantine, the narrative begins moving more decisively toward horror and conspiracy. The gradual escalation is effective because the game allows its mystery to develop rather than explaining everything immediately. Questions surrounding the experiment, the authorities, and the true nature of the danger become important reasons to continue reading. A parallel storyline introduces a mysterious female agent assigned to pursue a fugitive. Her mission initially appears straightforward, but incomplete information from her superiors suggests that she is being manipulated or deliberately kept unaware of crucial details. The fugitive is similarly more complicated than expected. This second perspective helps expand the narrative beyond Jack's domestic situation and indicates that the events unfolding around Grey Ville are part of a broader mystery. The expectation that these separate threads will eventually collide creates much of the suspense. Gameplay is predominantly built around reading dialogue and making decisions. The choices allow players to influence Jack's responses, personality, and interactions with other characters. These decisions provide some agency, although this should not be mistaken for an extremely elaborate branching narrative where every selection produces a completely different storyline. Many choices are more effective at shaping the player's interpretation of Jack than radically transforming the plot. Even so, having control over his behavior makes conversations more engaging than simply watching events unfold. The visual presentation complements the narrative through a distinctive illustrated style reminiscent of graphic novels and horror comics. Character artwork, environmental backgrounds, shadows, and dramatic compositions contribute to the uneasy atmosphere. It is not an animation-heavy production, so much of the experience depends upon static artwork, text, and the player's imagination. Fortunately, the presentation suits the restrained nature of the story and helps establish an identity that feels appropriate for its combination of family drama, mystery, conspiracy, and horror. Pacing is deliberately measured. The game spends considerable time establishing Jack and the people around him before pushing its larger crisis into the foreground. Players expecting immediate horror may initially find the opening somewhat slow, but the quieter material gives later developments additional context. The drawback is that the story ends while the larger mystery is still gaining momentum. Part 1 functions much more like the opening episode of a serialized thriller than a completely self-contained adventure, leaving significant questions unanswered. The relatively brief length is therefore both an advantage and a limitation. It makes the game easy to complete without excessive filler, but there is not enough time for every character, mystery, and narrative possibility to reach its full potential. The ending is designed to encourage continuation rather than provide comprehensive closure. Players uncomfortable with cliffhangers or incomplete episodic narratives should keep this structure in mind. Steam Deck compatibility is less straightforward than with games carrying an official Verified designation. Perseverance: Part 1 does not have an official Steam Deck compatibility rating that clearly guarantees a fully Verified handheld experience. Because it is primarily a lightweight visual novel based around text and straightforward interaction, its fundamental gameplay is not particularly demanding, but players should regard Steam Deck operation as Playable rather than guaranteed. Minor control, interface, text readability, or compatibility adjustments may be necessary depending on the current SteamOS and Proton configuration. What ultimately makes the experience interesting is its emphasis on ordinary people caught within extraordinary circumstances. Secret experiments and quarantine scenarios are familiar horror concepts, but Jack's troubled family life gives the narrative a more personal perspective. The mysterious agent storyline then introduces a larger conspiracy that prevents the plot from becoming solely a domestic survival tale. These elements combine into an effective opening chapter even though the limited runtime prevents the story from reaching a truly satisfying resolution. Perseverance: Part 1 is best suited to players who appreciate visual novels, slow-burning horror, character-focused storytelling, conspiracy mysteries, and decision-based dialogue. Those wanting combat, exploration-heavy gameplay, complicated puzzles, or extensive mechanical systems will find little of that here. As an introductory episode, however, it establishes its characters and mysteries efficiently, creates an appropriately ominous atmosphere, and leaves enough unresolved material to make the continuation appealing.
👍
I liked that sequence with the giant bottle
It started out slow, and I'm not really too keen on the family drama. However, the story did pick up pace after meeting a certain character along the road. Now I'm curious and will be playing the next chapters to know more.
