About

The harvest is done. The lake runs still. But something in Watarholt is changing... and you feel it before anyone else does.

You explore this world through conversations, relationships, and the rhythms of village life. You decide how you speak to others, how you comfort them, how much you trust them - and how much they trust you. As the woods grow hostile and the waters turn deadly, you shape how the people around you respond to fear, tradition, and the unknown.

Your decisions shape the story. Choose your words carefully - not every outcome will turn out well.
Build trust, challenge beliefs, or push others away. Your relationships and reputation define your path through grief, faith, and fear.

Immerse yourself in a world brought to life through hand-drawn characters and environments, subtly animated to capture the stillness and unease of a fading summer. Every expression, every silence tells part of the story.

Choose your name, demeanor, and worldview. Out of Water invites you to project yourself into its world - the protagonist is defined not by presets, but by your imagination and choices.

Romance is entirely optional. You may form deep bonds - as friends, allies, or lovers - with one of three men: Harik, Ansgar, or Basi.
Your path with each is shaped by trust, belief, and shared experience. Love changes the story, but it’s never required to complete it.

The tale of Watarholt unfolds at your pace, through your choices, and in your voice.

The village of Watarholt is preparing for winter but something supernatural is lurking…
Gameplay & Settings
🌿At the start you're given a choice to play the game with the ability to redo your choices or make them final. Such a nice touch! If you make your decisions final there will be a limit on how far back you can roll your dialogue but it will make your choices have more weight. I chose to make my choices final. 🌿As you play you unlock a cg gallery and lore. The lore menu holds important info such as your standing with the village and your relationship with the residents. 🌿Feel free to save often for replays (or to get achievements). There are a lot of save files so no need to be sparing. You can save at choice points too. 🌿Romance is optional with one of three male characters (Harik, Ansgar or Basi). Engaging in a romance will change your story experience but is totally optional and will not be required to finish the game. It is fairly easy to know which person to romance if you desire to choose someone. Just choose the options to spend time with them when those choices allow. 🌿One route took me about 4 hours at a leisurely pace. Of course it will vary on how fast you read and if you chose to keep your choices permanent or flexible. 🌶️ Spice Level - Medium. The sexual content is text based and done in a loving and caring way between you and your chosen mate. Romance and sexual content is optional and depends on your choices. There are scenes that depict death, violence, grief, horror and supernatural themes. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3793569684 Settings & extras include; display options, skip text options, text speed, auto-forward time, and audio controls. There are lots of save slots and you can take screen captures by hiding the hud. You also do get to choose your name at the start of the game.
The Visuals & Audio
Visually the art is beautiful, filled with hand crafted goodness. The usage of light plays an important role. In some backgrounds there are animated effects such as shifting light rays or flecks of particles. The characters have a lively quality to them with how their eyes are painted combined with animation (blinking). The music is moving and fluid and is an important element in the story unlike some games where it is more of a background filler. The use of ambient sounds (water flowing, crows squawking, etc.) is well done and enriches the story. There is no voice acting but truthfully it is not needed. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3793382845
Overall Experience
A visual novel that is engaging, well written and filled with beautiful hand-crafted artwork. The story and characters develop through your interactions with them. Who you chose to spend time with, how you respond to events and how you treat the people all come into play. You feel like you are part of the story rather than just reading one. A highly recommended experience. 💗 🌟The artbook is being given free to those to purchase Out of the Water. A very thoughtful gift from the developer! It includes illustrations not in the game, lore and notes of the making of the novel. I picked up this game on release day after playing the demo the night before and getting hooked. The art was what drew me in initially but the story, music and atmosphere make this an amazing experience to play. With a multitude of choices and approaches the player can take this is also a fantastic story to re-play and take a different path. My first playthrough was very intense and the ending very fulfilling - worth all the trepidation! I would strongly recommend this game, it will take you on a truly gripping journey!
I've got to play the various pre-release versions of the game and each time I became more invested and curious how the story would continue! It's really well written and offers you 3 main routes with various interesting ways to die and end the game early. Depending on how you interact with your friends and the village you'll end up pursuing completely different "solutions" to your problem, so I recommend playing it multiple times to collect them all. The art style is once again gorgeous. Each of the scenes has cute hand-drawn images with "special" moments having fullscreen pictures that are saved in your gallery. It's also quite obvious who the developer's favorite character is (starts with a B). There's quite a few cheesy romance scenes with your guy friends/lovers.
Sadly, in the one romance scene with a woman you just die.
Certainly my favorite VN so far (
I've played 3
)
This game was a true autumn gift! It immediately immerses you in a special autumn mood – tender and dangerous. The art, the movement of the air, folkloric and historical references – all create a unique atmosphere. I'm especially pleased that the secondary characters are depicted not as shadows but with their own sprites. The lore and artbook further help immerse you in the game world. The player's choices make you think deeply. I didn't want to simply try out options, but rather to truly choose and experience a unique story with the main character. The story is truly well-written, yet doesn't overwhelm players with details that they can explore in the lore if they choose. The trio of love interests/friends has its own interesting dynamic beyond the relationship development opportunities they offer the player. I recommend this game to anyone who appreciates handcrafted art, the power of relationship building, the elusive beauty of nature, and mythology.
IMO this is a well written and interesting story with good characters and an awesome atmosphere. I also really like the art style and music. I wish I could find more visual novels like this.
I enjoyed it! I was rushing a little to finish my first playthrough because I wanted to get to the end before bed, that's how invested I was. The drawings were super pretty and I enjoyed the characters a lot. I'll definitely will be replaying until I get all of the achievements! A underrated gem for thriller and romance, definitely
Overall, it was a pretty engaging experience. The three leads/romantic interests all had convincing perspectives on how to deal with the mysterious force plaguing the village, although Basi is my personal favourite of the lot. I appreciated the worldbuilding the most; I felt as if I was really there in an olden Germanic village, faced with the daily reality of struggle and being at nature's mercy. And I grew pretty attached to the wellbeing of the village as a whole, not just the fates of the leads. The art was also quite nice, accentuating the Germanic atmosphere very nicely. I feel as if the horror and supernatural elements could have been emphasized more though to heighten the tension. In addition, the final reveal was a tad underwhelming to me as I didn't feel much more emotional connection to the past of the village. I wish there could have been some flashbacks to better illustrate the conditions that led to the past tragedy. All in all, I think this is worth playing for fans of dating sims, well-written historical settings, and mythology.
Very enjoyable and interesting game with a beautiful art style and a really nice atmosphere to it. The story and characters kept me invested and the romance path I took was really cute. I recommend it!
Beautiful artworks, great story with good pacing, thrilling twists and atmospheric music!
The art is good. The story? Quite boring.
