This game is actually pretty good if not one of the better ones especially if you are f2p or low spender. The game unfortunately does not favour the western audience due to their truce timing happening between 11pm GMT +8 to 11am GMT +8. But if you are a gamer from Asia and wanting to play a real time strategy game such as this, give it a try! The mechanics of battle is also really good and fun as you can micromanage your troops. Not just blindly send them in. And the difference between a maxed upgraded commander vs a non-upgraded commander is minimal compare to games of similar type where a maxed commander is ridiculously strong. Here, f2p players can make a difference as number of members in your alliance is also a very important factor in winning or losing a war.

bad mobile p2w port game
Looks decent at first, but advancement is frustrating and heavily dependent on spending money.

王于兴师, also known as Order of Kings, is a free to play strategy game that mixes real time battles with the slower world building side of an MMO strategy game. I am building up my territory, developing my forces and taking part in large battles where I can directly control several groups of troops. What I like about it is that the battles are not completely automated. I can move units around myself, choose targets and try to use the battlefield properly. It gives the game more of an RTS feeling than I expected from this type of strategy game. The terrain is probably the part I find most interesting. Hills, forests and narrow passes actually matter because they can affect how I approach a fight. I can use high ground for better vision, hide troops in forests or hold a narrow route where a larger force has less room to move. Units also have different attack ranges and physical collision, so formations can actually affect how easily troops move through an area. I like having these things to think about because it gives me more control over a battle than simply choosing an army and watching two numbers fight. The siege battles are another good addition. I can attack cities, break through walls and fight through streets, while defenders can use different routes to slow me down or launch counterattacks. Commanders also have strategist abilities that can improve things like damage, defence or healing, so I have another reason to think about which commanders I bring into a particular situation. There is a decent amount of tactical potential here when I am actually controlling the battlefield, especially when I am trying to use positioning instead of simply throwing more troops at the enemy. Where I start to have more mixed feelings is the MMO and SLG side of the game. Outside the real time battles, there is a lot of development, progression and long term management to deal with. Alliances, territory and server competition are a major part of the experience, which means the game is not really designed around short self contained matches. I can appreciate that structure, but it also makes the game feel much more demanding than the battles themselves. There is a lot happening around the actual combat, and sometimes I would rather spend more time commanding armies than dealing with the wider progression systems. The free to play structure is also something I have to be careful about when judging it. There are in game purchases and the game is clearly built around long term progression, so I do not get the feeling that everything is designed purely around giving me the most direct strategy experience possible. The game is also heavily online focused, with alliances, co op and PvP forming a big part of the design. I like having that large scale world available, but it means the experience depends on me being willing to invest time into a persistent MMO style strategy game rather than simply launching it whenever I want a quick RTS match. I think the presentation does a decent job of selling the scale. The 3D battlefields make the armies look much larger than they would in a simple strategy game, and watching different groups collide while I move units around gives the combat a nice sense of scale. At the same time, I do not think the game has enough personality outside the strategy systems to make it particularly memorable. The historical setting is useful for the gameplay, but I am much more interested in the mechanics than the story or characters. There is also AI generated concept art in the game according to the developer, which is something I noticed when looking more closely at how the visuals were made. Overall, Order of Kings is a decent strategy game with a genuinely interesting real time combat system. I like controlling multiple troops, using terrain, managing formations and taking part in sieges, and those parts give me more direct control than I normally expect from an MMO strategy game. The slower progression, online focus and free to play structure make it less appealing when I just want a straightforward RTS, but the actual battles have enough going on to keep me interested. For me, it is a game with a good tactical foundation that gets held back by all the MMO systems surrounding it rather than by the core combat itself. Rating: 7.7/10
