OmOneko

This is not a game about catgirls. It is a game about girl CATS. You have questions, so. Yes, you can sex with girl cats (offscreen). No, there are no H-scenes. No, there is no R18 patch. The visuals and literotica for the scenes are lovely and unique, with none of the usual tedious tropes; passionate and vibrant without clumsy explicit distractions. The girl cats are not humans, but they are written beautifully and treated respectfully as persons. The relationships with them are wholesome and contextually mildly taboo, but not fetishy or creepy. The soundtrack is chill and the illustrations are sublime, and the contrast with the understated backgrounds keeps the focus on the gorgeous characters and their stunning eyes. Each route is unique and emotionally tense. You will cry happy tears. There also is clever overlap where things revealed in one story lend new meaning to things said in others. Legitimately the most underexposed and underrated VN I have played. 10/10 would fall in love with girl cats again.

OmOneko is a free visual novel, and once again I was amazed by a vast labour of love which has produced so much good text and very attractive and evocative artwork, within an overarching branching story. There is a lot of reading here, and I expected to skip over much of it but instead got fully immersed and read everything. My play time represents playthroughs to (eventually) get each of the three main endings (and their associated achievements), plus the dead-end endings, and the final "read all chapters" achievement. The three cat-women Nekos are wonderful characters: the patient, non-confrontational, and caring Clawdia, the fun-loving hyper-active Pepper, and the reserved and traumatised Shimi. But the paths for each of them reveal much more about their deeper selves, and about their fears, frustrations and hopes. They inhabit a world which largely regards them as being on a spectrum from "dangerous others" to "quietly tolerated super pets and/or tame companions", but the game whispers "what if we just saw them as people?" Of the humans, the main character's ex-partner is unashamedly evil, but actually I found the main character himself to be more problematic and disagreeable in his laziness, his paternalistic "master-servant" approach to the Nekos, and his overriding concern to keep his mother (and de facto "landlady") ignorant of the Neko-related changes in her home, rather than championing them. My favourite human was actually the emergency doctor, though I also applauded any tentative demonstrations of confidence and autonomy by the neighbour Veronika. Overall I invested a lot of time and attention to this visual novel because the game warranted it, because I enjoyed it, and because the developer deserved it, and I don't regret any of the hours spent.

Take everything you know about catgirls and leave it at the door because OmOneko decides to abide by none of it at all. What starts as a cute story about taking your best friend's pet unveils a world of monstrous rats behind every corner and a society ready to fight monsters the size of a Buick at any moment. The only defense are felinoids who are singularly suited to hunting them, and also happen to look good in a sun dress. Also, some of them are great at rhyming. Some of them not so much. But rather than an action-adventure tail-err-tale, this is fundamentally a story of a lonely, neurotic and nameless man, from which the story is told. The story of OmOneko centers on said nameless man and his neko step-sister, Clawdia - who is best girl - after a messy breakup with his emotionally abusive ex-girlfriend, Mia. As soon as the dust settles, BFF and best boy, Goro, drops his neko, Pepper, off with the lead as well and just to make sure the universe made its love of chaos known, a wounded, sick and feral neko - dubbed 'Shimi' by the protagonist - joins to form the core trio of neko leading ladies. The nekos, catgirls ostensibly, have their own complexities and quirks and these three are downright quirky. Clawdia is a well-to-do domestic with gentle sensibilities (who also loves wrestling), Pepper is sharp as a whip and often speaks in rhyme, and Shimi is quiet and mysterious. How well you mesh with each is merely the first step in the multiple branching story paths the game has to offer. Therein lies the beauty of a game that is a relatively straightforward visual novel experience: the fact that the writing - for a cast of monster girls - decidedly human. The main character is an emotional wreck who cannot escape the terrifying confines of his own mind. Goro is a larger-than-life wise guy who talks big to pump himself up. Veronica is an extremely sweet and sympathetic soul. Even secondary characters like Sawbones will leave a huge and indelible mark on the reader. And every interaction is an outstandingly crafted and heartfelt moment. If this game fails to make you crack a smile or feel any kind of emotion at all, even once, then I kindly bid you get checked out to make sure you weren't produced by SkyNet. I don't want to spoil anything as the game is best enjoyed for your own sake and since the game is free you have no reason not to indulge if anything I said here today intrigues even the smallest bit of curiosity. The only thing I could even possibly ask of the devs is an OmOneko 2. Also Clawdia is best neko.

Not usually into the whole furry thing, but this is not bad. Writing is very good. Yeah overall seem to be a good game here.

Omoneko isn't a bad visual novel. I enjoyed the games melancholy tone early on and how your main off camera guy comes across as more of a tried parent than a generic nice guy. Furthermore in this case censorship works in the game's favor he doesn't see the girls in that way and it sin't suggested that you should either. Although it is hard to to see the appeal of Clawdia's see through dress. her outfit is enough to see her curves but still be SFW. Claw's outfit isn't the only suggestive thing in Omo but that kind of talk comes across as something to lighten the mood a hint towards X content. best of all the nature of the neko girls and how they are treated rasies so many questions about the world outside your guys house. This games only flaw is how it doesn't have many choices or branching paths. More interactivity could help keep things interesting.
