The best retro fantasy MMORPG on the planet. Old School is RuneScape but… older! This is the open world you know and love, but as it was in 2007. Saying that, it’s even better than that – Old School is shaped by you, its players, with regular new content, fixes and expansions voted for by the fans!
Revenue comes from in-game items and microtransactions, which our price-based model doesn't estimate. The player count below is how many people own it, not what they spent.
About

Greetings, adventurer! Rooted in the origin of MMOs, Old School RuneScape is the only ever-lasting, ever-evolving adventure that is shaped by you.
Released way back in 2013, Old School RuneScape is RuneScape as you *used* to know it! Based on the 2007 build of the globally popular open world fantasy MMORPG, Old School is constantly updated with improvements and new content voted on by you, the fans! The close relationship between developers and players is central to what makes Old School so magical.

So, you want to be a master cook? Or a powerful mage? Whether you’re here for the rich story and lore, the challenging combat, to fight alongside others or against them, to journey alone or simply to experience the magical world of Gielinor, Old School can be any adventure you want.
Master 24 diverse skills across a huge array of play styles
Take on over 140 quests spanning the fascinating and varied game world
Confront dozens and dozens of bosses
Risk everything in an assortment of PvP encounters
Profit from a thriving and dynamic in-game economy

Some people just want to hang out with friends. And you’ll find plenty of folk to do that with in Gielinor. But those who want seek a different kind of adventure have plenty of choices, too.
No matter what you’re specializing in, the quest for the best loot will have skillers and perfectionists obsessing over their character builds. The strongest wand, the mightiest bow, the most *fabulous* hat – there’s always something to aim for.
And if you’re among the most ardent adventurers, be sure to let people know by donning one of the many Capes of Accomplishment. Who knows, maybe one day the fabled Max Cape can be yours?

A rich story and deep well of lore await those whose interests are more cerebral, too. From the dastardly dealings of corrupt rulers to the day-to-day musings of the village baker, tales of both... world-shattering urgency and casual procrastination abound.
Over two dozen major quest-lines allow players to delve into Gielinor’s past and future, and the pages are still being written, waiting for you to witness their unfolding. With major game updates every week, the experience never stops evolving and improving.
This world goes where you go, too, with full cross-compatibility across PC and mobile versions!

The key to Old School’s success is both special and unique – it’s you! From the day Old School was born, we recognized that building on the game’s foundations while staying loyal to its very essence was essential. That’s why players have the deciding vote on every improvement that is or is not introduced to the game.
In-game polling isn’t the only interaction, either. Join developers on their regular behind-the-scenes live-streams, or chat with them directly across our many social channels. Old School is owned just as much by its players as it is its makers.

I first played Runescape in 2006. I was 11 then, and when my best friend told me about a game where there were "other people walking around that are real people", I had to check it out. So on my old dell computer, me and my friend played hours upon hours of Runescape. We weren't even members; we explored the world on F2P, died in the Wildy, wondered what was on the other side of the wall in Falador, and killed hill giants under Edgefield. It was incredible, I would live it all over again if I could. Fast forward to present day. My friend is gone. He has passed on from this life, but Runescape has not. And occasionally, I still play it. Despite its complexities, the grind, and yes, I am a member now, it's simplicity takes me back to a time of joy and peace. Sometimes I revisit those old areas that we explored, relive some of the memories we shared. A game created so long ago became closure for me, and I will always return to Runescape. I know so many others who have had this experience with this point and click, stats based game. Do I recommend playing Runescape? Absolutely. But let me first warn you. Here be goblins, dragons, dwarves, deserts, mountains, waterfalls. Here be quests that will hurt your brain and make you think. You will frequent Youtube, steam guides, the Runescape wiki. You will encounter people like me, people who have 20 years under their belt, but will be willing to guide you because they know how you feel. Play this game. Explore Gielinor. But just remember, when that guy with the skull and crossbones tells you that he will show you a really cool treasure deep in the Wildy, don't trust him. He just wants your gold.

its like a drug that gets you addicted for 2 or 3 months, then you quit for a year or two, only to come back and repeat the cycle all over again you'll stay up until 3 am killing the same boss for the 900th time trying to get a rare drop 10/10 would relapse again
Been playing this game on and off since middle school. This game is like a drug.
only game where you can drink bull semen and then kill the bull as part of a quest. also ruined my life 10/10
you can see why they canceled the pride event 2 years ago,, if you're not a straight white guy, probably play this with chat off; also if you are a straight white guy play it with chat off cause you don't need that either
If art is about recontextualizing our most basic relations to the World in a new light or a setting, then this game is truly art. It's the most perfectly balanced mirror for showing how we understand striving for something, or work as a whole.
Never beat the addiction, it always comes back.
my brother use to abuse and hit me. and force me to train agility and runecrafting for him. till i turned 18. then i got addicted to the game.
I have been playing Runescape for more than 15 years and have had plenty of fine memories with the game. I've invested time and money into this game and have always been a faithful supporter of Jagex even when it seemed skeptical to do so. That being said I have recently lost my account of 15 years due to "Bots" and Jagex has no solution to fix it. So ♥♥♥♥ them, Jagex has got to be one of the most poorly maintained compannies I have had the displeasure of interacting with in years. How many times do I have to dig for help to recover my account because bots stole access to it despite Jagex reassuring me with 2 step factors and official accounts that this would be avoided. I work very often and am not able to log in as often as I would like but when I do I expect to be able to pick off directly from where I left off like with any other MMORPG, this is NEVER the case with Jagex. It is always a fight to get answers for what happened to my account, sometimes even getting blamed by support for my accounts going missing. "You should log in more often! It's your fault!" ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. Maybe you limy bastards should divert your attention from unnecessary events and new dead on arrival skills and focus on the ACTUAL issues of the game. DO NOT play Runescape officially, if you really want to play it find a fan server or something. Jagex is not on your side.
♥♥♥♥ jagex
