And now get over here and sing with me this own version of a remix of a song you may or may not know. Alright, and one, and two, and one, two, three, four: "I'm gonna send me to outta space, to grind another base I'm gonna send me to outta space, to mine another place ... It’s a game from another dimension It’s a game from another dimension It’s a game from another dimension Play those extensions" Sorry, couldn’t resist. Okay but seriously now, let’s start with a few questions. Is it maybe a little too early to post a review of NMS after around 30 hours of playtime? Or maybe it’s already a little late in a way, considering it took me another ten years to finally get around to a game I’ve been following since release? And with countless reviews already out there, there’s another question hanging in the air: who am I actually supposed to convince at this point? Well, late to the party or not, landing sequence has already been initiated. Congratulations, you’ve already discovered a new planet. I gotta say games like this always give me a pretty rough time at first. I’ve just got too much going on and I’m constantly trying to keep up with too many projects, while working way too much and barely finding the time for any of it. That’s actually why I still haven’t managed to write reviews for The Forest or Astroneer, and I had a similar problem with both of them. It also comes with this weird side effect where if I have to put a game like this on hold for a while, getting back into it can be really hard for me. I often end up putting it off more and more and somehow lose the motivation to play it again even though I actually want to. So at this point you probably shouldn’t be asking yourself whether this space sandbox exploration game should be your next game just because of the tags. The real question is whether the concept fits your life right now. The thing is if you don’t have too much going on, don’t have many responsibilities towards yourself or other people and looking for something that can really keep you hooked for a long time, you can hardly go wrong with NMS these days. In my case and I’m saying this precisely because the game has pulled me in so deeply and I find it really hard to put down, I’m enjoying it so much that it has already caused me some very real problems. For example, I recently missed a deadline I had committed to. Obviously that was my own fault and I can’t blame the game for it, but I think it’s fair to say it deserves a tiny bit of the blame. On top of that I’ve been spending even more time on my computer, so my back is starting to complain again. In short, this game can be extremely addictive. And then there’s just an absurd amount of stuff to discover and do in this game. On top of the amazing soundtrack, and I’ve been listening to 65daysofstatic since their 2004 album The Fall of Math, you can even make music yourself in the game, I think that’s absolutely insane. But what I really want to give Hello Games credit for is the fact that they never gave up on No Man’s Sky. They’ve kept improving it and adding to it over the years with, I think more than 40 game-changing updates and all of that for free without any BS. The kicker is that when the game came out in August 2016, a lot of players were massively disappointed and NMS was at one point one of the worst-rated games on here. The launch and all the broken promises basically turned into a complete disaster. The whole controversy even went so far that employees were heavily insulted and harassed. There were even death threats, which eventually got Scotland Yard involved. There was also the rumor that Sony had told them to "just release it" back then, especially since they were pushing the promotion so hard. Thankfully though, Hello Games managed to turn things around over the next two years and saved the game, and today we have one hell of a game on our hands. If you were one of those people who put it down in disappointment back then and never touched it again, or you’re one of those who never actually played it in the first place, ten years later it’s a lot of fun and as mentioned seriously addictive. Definitely recommended, and while I’m at it, happy anniversary!
10 years later and the devs are still updating the game free of charge and for the love of the fans. They could have sold out and pumped it full of microtransactions and paid DLC but instead they took a PR disaster and turned it into a most beloved game.
This game offers some gorgeous and truly unique visuals and experiences and is *close* to being a great game... But unfortunately it is not. The main issue for me is the lack of a real hook. There isn't a sense of progression or challenge - something big or rewarding to work towards. The procedural generation is gimmicky and soulless which for me killed my drive to explore after the first 2 star systems and they haven't really offered anything to replace that. I thought I would try the "swarm" expedition but again that was just tedious, shallow and ultimately seemed pointless. I was engaged for a while in setting up some money making methods, but then I realised what the heck will I even do with the money? There's nothing really worth chasing. The game is very shallow when compared to what it could be and probably should be. I enjoyed my 50ish hours enough, and I am thankful for the experience, but I don't think I will be playing any more.
I've heard for a decade that this is an airtight masterpiece of a game; complete, stable, well-thought out, intricate, deep. I finally gave it a try, and literally every single aspect of the game is broken or half-finished. Explore planets! The planets have about ten animals total on them, and they just kind of... wander around, not doing much. Once you scan them one time, that's all the info you can ever have about them; there's nothing else to study. I guess you could tame one and then breed it and do genetic experiments on it, but the point of that seems to be battling them like Pokemon, and I'm just... not really into that. There are waypoints scattered across the planet that also don't really do anything; you can't navigate to them or anything, so they just seem pretty... pointless. Good luck finding them again once you've flown away. Okay, maybe exploring planets isn't the point. I'll try something else. Build ships! No, there's not a ship parts store; you have to cannibalize other ships for parts. Hope you like sitting around in random hangars waiting for interesting ships to come by. Oh, maybe building something bigger is where it's at? Oh. It's so buggy that getting stuck in the walls is a routine issue. Sure. Okay. Well, maybe building ships isn't the point. I'll try something else. Manage a settlement! Weird, all the buildings that are called living quarters are just, like, closets with random stuff like servers in them. Well, maybe if I upgrade them, they'll look better? ...Nope, the interiors stay exactly the same. This is a building called "luxury living unit" with zero rooms or furniture other than these random computer servers in them, and I've never seen a citizen in there because there's nothing to do in there. Well, are the citizens interesting, at least? ...Nope, they just wander around doing nothing. There's literally nothing to do other than wait around for your citizens to occasionally propose building something, which you as the overseer can't initiate on your own for some reason. They can't even teach you words of their language. Oh, speaking of which! Learn languages! Hope you like either endlessly cruising around random planets looking for "knowledge stones" and "ancient ruins" (which look the same no matter which culture they belong to, btw) to learn one word at a time OR wandering from space station to space station learning one word at a time from random aliens you'll never see again. Also, the translator you bent over backwards for? Yeah, that doesn't actually help at all. It randomly translates five words sometimes, but doesn't actually teach you the words it translated, so it's basically worthless. Well, maybe managing a settlement and learning languages isn't the point. I'll try something else. Build a base! ...Oh, cool, nothing snaps to anything else, so everything's extremely annoying to position. Even if you turn on free building, it's a super painfully finicky process to accomplish even the most basic structures. Okay, maybe building a base isn't the point. I'll try something else. ...Oh, wait. There's nothing left in the game. That's everything. There's nothing else to do. Well, at least I can play with my friends!!! ...Oh. The game kicked my friends out of my game to force me to do the story quest, and I have to do it alone. Cool cool cool cool cool.
I bought this game in 2016 at release and to be honest i loved it then. i loved the idea, the concept and the ambition behind it. I think i sunk 100 hours in the first month it was out and I felt like i got my money's worth out of my play time then so i didn't complain much or leave any reviews. I was a bit disappointed at some of the over hype and missing promised features and some bugs as I'm sure a lot of people were in the beginning but look at what its become! look at all the missing features and empty promises from all the Kickstarter projects and fraudulent cash grab rug pull scams that early access game developers have thrown in our faces between now and then. The team at hello games has proven to be nothing but faithful and loyal to its player base and the gaming industry as a whole. they're dedicated and earnest. They could have taken our money and cut and run but they didn't and what an honest accomplishment they've achieved through no mans sky and all of the updates! They have my trust in the face of a whole lot of crappy dishonest development rug pull cash grabs and i couldn't be more thankful and proud of what they've accomplished! Every free update since launch has expanded a game and a universe with a living soul that's simply blown my mind at times and given me experiences i didn't know were possible through video games!. I can't wait for Light no fire and don't rush it this time guys. Let it cook, we're all here waiting with all the trust and goodwill you've earned! At least from me anyway <3

Nice and chill. Mechanics are simple and the gameplay loop is kind of whatever you want it to be. Gameplay loop at its core revolves arounds gathering minerals from different planets and traveling between systems inhabited by either small, trade oriented lizard merchants who do not seem entirely trustworthy, orcs with a very warrior-like mentality who sound like they might invade a neighbour if given a chance or clankers. There looks to be a 4th race but I'm not at the station to socialize so read a wiki or something. Expeditions bring a new twist typically revolving around the latest update, some have been great, others not so much. A bit of variety is always welcome regardless. Most important part is that the game has taken galactic steps forward from the abomination it used to be. Try it out, at this point the content is so varied there is bound to be something there for almost anyone. I've spent a bit of time with this game and still haven't tried everything the game has to offer.
