A welcome breath of fresh air. Nine Sols achieves what very few titles manage: a perfectly balanced difficulty curve with amazing boss fights where the final boss is a strict reflection of everything the game taught you. All while providing a deeply philosophical, meaningful story, great taiwanese-inspired aesthetics, alongside memorable characters. To defeat Eigong is the graduation ceremony of a Real Gamer who has successfully internalized a masterclass in how to build a metroidvania combat system. Most modern action titles allow the player to win through rolling spam or over-leveled stats. Nine Sols completely rejects this cowardice. It forces the player to stand their ground using the parry, unbounded counter and talisman mechanics. You cannot dodge-spam away from Eigong: you must look her in the eyes and then intercept her strikes with absolute precision. Most boss fights feel like a high-speed, rhythm-based fencing duel. However, the forum is currently flooded by casuals posting screenshots of their "victory" over Eigong, all while it's clear that they played the game in story mode or picked the ending where Eigong only has two phases rather than three. Let me be crystal clear: Stopping at phase two means you bailed the moment the game demanded absolute mastery. It is the equivalent of running a marathon, stopping at mile 20 because your legs hurt, and demanding a medal anyway. The developers engineered a three-phase encounter precisely to separate the Real Gamers from those who simply want a checklist completion. To those people: You did not beat Nine Sols. You survived a demo. Face the third face or accept that you got filtered.
This is a very hard game but it's also a great game. Nine Sols is a Metroidvania with Soulslike elements and Sekiro style parry mechanics. You cannot progress through the game without being comfortable with parrying attacks. Early on you can get away with exclusively dodging but the deeper and deeper you get, the more important parrying becomes. The story is really neat and I was captivated by the characters, their backstories and their personalities. I'm pretty picky when it comes to what grabs my attention and what doesn't so I was pleasantly surprised to be so invested by the time I reached the final boss of the game. The exploration is also handled very well. Clear indicators if you've missed a chest, a mystery or a miniboss in every area of the game. Some areas you'll have to return to once you've unlocked a new ability or found mapping and no secret is too hidden. There are a few missable achievements that you can look up using a guide on steam if you care about 100%ing the game. Overall, it's not a slog to find everything and I had a lot of fun exploring on my own. I ended up using an interactive map for only two or three chests I missed during my playthrough. I mentioned earlier that the game is very hard and that's true. However, it does a really good job of introducing new mechanics slowly before each boss fight. Then, the boss usually incorporates everything you've learned in that section and instills the fundamentals well before you move onto the next area and a new mechanic.
These next two paragraphs are referring to the final boss of the game. No spoilers but I have to talk about it because it's my only flaw with the game. Please read them.
I want to make it very well known before you buy the game, the final boss of this game is very hard. In terms of ramping, the rest of the game does NOT prepare you at all for the difficulty spike of the 'True Ending' boss. It's multitudes harder than any other enemy, miniboss or full boss you've ever seen in the game leading up to it. I consider myself extremely good at soulslike games and it still took me an hour of attempts to beat it. I looked online and the average player takes anywhere between 2-4 hours of straight attempts to beat the final boss. Do your own research but be wary of spoilers. This is by no means a bad boss fight, it's super fun and feels incredible once you get the hang of it. It is, however, a POORLY DESIGNED final boss because of the difficulty. Even though I really enjoyed the final boss, I can still see how out of place it is compared to the rest of the game. It's easier than Sekiro's two hardest bosses but it's harder than every other boss in Sekiro. Don't give up and you will beat it. Don't worry about how long it takes, you'll get better with each attempt. Take your time. With all that out of the way, I highly recommend this game. It was so much fun and it's the only thing I wanted to play all month since I bought it. I couldn't put it down once I got into it. I bought it on sale for $12 but it's worth it even at full price $30. It's a great game, if you have the money and don't want to wait for a sale, get it.
This game is awesome. My only real critique is that it doesn't do the greatest job to prepare you for the final boss, but considering the narrative being written, I suppose it does make some sense if the final boss is quite a few levels above any other boss you encounter. Regardless, the movement feels great and there are plenty of ways to deal damage that never feel stale. I felt quite attached to the characters and everybody had their own unique story. Also quite enjoyed the juxtaposition between spiritual and scientific themes. I bought it at half price but if I paid full price for the game I wouldn't feel disappointed at all.
