this. BREATHES. classic!!! Steadily making my way through all the games, and I'm already so in love
I liked this one quite a lot. It's set in the 30s and is probably one of the most straight forwards games ND has to offer. Easily done without any walkthrough and the old-timey music is a blast.

The atmosphere and music were excellent, but the gameplay was very tedious. Some of the puzzles were difficult, especially the golfing ones.
I remember playing this game after buying it at a garage sale over a decade ago. I never beat it but remembered it fondly. After listening to one of the books on a long drive, the memory of it popped into my head. All that to say, nostalgia is a very large part of why I recommend this game. The character models and animations all remind me of older games like Planescape; Torment, a kind of vintage feel that suits the 1930s setting pretty well. The voiceacting is good and the story is a compelling one, albeit very familiar if you've read the first three books in the Nancy Drew series. That being said, the puzzles are not always the most intuitive. I understand why I never beat this game the first time and if I had any qualms about looking up answers online, this would have been an overall frustrating experience. I don't think I would recommend playing this on senior detective difficulty for most people. There are several minigames that sway between fun and frustrating. Despite several moments where the game expected to make what seem to me to be very large leaps in remembering old things you found earlier, it is a fun experience and I can see why they had enough success to make so many of these games. I will say the ending feels a little anti-climatic and rushed, and you never really get a final confrontation or humbling of the bad guy of the game. It's a fun game, especially if you have someone to play with who can help you keep notes or work on puzzles with. I bought this on sale and would not recommend it at full price, the game just isn't long enough to justify that.

Nancy Drew: Secret of the Old Clock is a classic point-and-click mystery adventure that successfully captures the charm of early detective fiction while delivering an engaging interactive experience. Developed and published by HeR Interactive, the game serves as a tribute to Nancy Drew's literary origins by transporting players back to the 1930s, where every clue, conversation, and puzzle contributes to an unfolding mystery. Instead of relying on action or spectacle, the game emphasizes observation, logical reasoning, and patient investigation, making it an enjoyable experience for players who appreciate thoughtful storytelling over fast-paced gameplay. The story follows Nancy Drew as she arrives to assist Emily Crandall, the young owner of the Lilac Inn, whose future has been thrown into uncertainty following a devastating explosion. As Nancy begins asking questions, what initially appears to be a straightforward case quickly develops into a tangled web of missing valuables, suspicious inheritances, hidden motives, and long-buried secrets. The narrative steadily introduces new suspects and unexpected twists without feeling rushed, encouraging players to gather evidence carefully before reaching conclusions. The mystery unfolds naturally, rewarding curiosity and attention to detail rather than simply guiding players from one objective to another. One of the game's greatest strengths is its historical setting. By placing Nancy's investigation in 1930, the adventure gains a unique identity that distinguishes it from many other entries in the series. Vintage automobiles, classic architecture, period fashion, and old-fashioned businesses help create an atmosphere that feels authentic and inviting. Driving Nancy's blue roadster between locations adds an extra layer of immersion, allowing exploration to feel more dynamic than simply selecting destinations from a menu. The historical backdrop never overshadows the mystery itself but instead enhances the overall experience by giving every location a distinctive personality. Gameplay revolves around the familiar formula that has made the Nancy Drew series popular for years. Players examine rooms for hidden clues, inspect objects, solve mechanical puzzles, interview suspects, and revisit locations as new evidence emerges. Progress depends on careful observation and logical thinking rather than reflexes, making every discovery feel earned. The interface remains simple and accessible, allowing newcomers to learn the mechanics quickly while still providing enough complexity to satisfy experienced fans of adventure games. Puzzle design is consistently enjoyable throughout the adventure. The game offers an impressive variety of challenges, including logic puzzles, coded messages, object manipulation, and entertaining side activities that fit naturally into the investigation. Mini-games such as miniature golf provide lighthearted diversions while remaining connected to the world rather than feeling like unnecessary distractions. The inclusion of both Junior and Senior Detective difficulty settings is another welcome feature, allowing players to tailor the experience according to their preferred level of challenge. This flexibility ensures that younger audiences, casual players, and veteran puzzle enthusiasts can all enjoy the adventure at their own pace. The supporting cast contributes significantly to the mystery's appeal. Every suspect has believable motivations, distinct personalities, and information that may or may not be trustworthy. Conversations encourage players to pay close attention to inconsistencies and hidden meanings, reinforcing the feeling of conducting a genuine investigation. Nancy herself remains an intelligent and composed protagonist whose confidence and curiosity make her the perfect guide through the unfolding case. Rather than relying on dramatic confrontations, the game builds suspense through subtle revelations and carefully placed clues that gradually expose the truth. Although the visuals reflect the technology available at the time of release, they continue to serve the game's atmosphere well. The environments are detailed enough to encourage exploration, while the interiors and outdoor locations successfully convey the cozy yet mysterious mood that defines the series. Character animations may appear dated by modern standards, but the expressive voice acting and atmospheric soundtrack compensate by bringing each location and conversation to life. The audio presentation consistently reinforces the feeling of stepping into a classic detective novel. Like many traditional adventure games, Secret of the Old Clock occasionally requires players to backtrack between locations or spend extra time searching for overlooked clues. Some puzzles may prove challenging without careful observation, and players accustomed to modern conveniences such as objective markers or extensive hints may occasionally find the pace slower than expected. However, these design choices are largely intentional, encouraging players to think independently and experience the satisfaction of solving problems through deduction rather than relying on constant guidance. Nancy Drew: Secret of the Old Clock remains one of the franchise's most memorable adventures because it combines an engaging mystery, rewarding puzzles, memorable characters, and a wonderfully realized historical setting into a cohesive detective experience. Its commitment to classic investigative gameplay makes every breakthrough feel satisfying, while the 1930 backdrop gives the adventure a distinctive charm that separates it from many contemporary mystery games. Although its presentation inevitably shows its age, the strength of its storytelling and puzzle design allows it to remain an enjoyable title for both longtime fans of Nancy Drew and newcomers looking for a traditional point-and-click adventure. Developed and published by HeR Interactive, it stands as an excellent example of how compelling detective work and thoughtful game design can create a timeless mystery. Rating: 8/10
This game has a cozy setting, the puzzles are a good challenge without feeling impossible, mini golf and driving are so fun! Zippy annoying af tho. I never played these as a kid and can now say mystery is SOLVED.
