This is a surprizingly fun game with well written characters and cool character designs. And it has awesome LGBTQ+ representation as well as accurate Bipolar Disorder representation. Each pair of characters can have a unique relationship dinamic that highlights different aspects of their personalities. I certainly didn't expect a free game to be this impressively good

Mission: It’s Complicated approaches the superhero genre from a refreshing angle, focusing less on spectacular combat and more on the relationships between the people wearing the costumes. Developed and published by Schell Games, it is primarily a narrative visual novel in which five superheroes can be paired in different combinations. The objective is to develop a strong enough bond between two heroes to help save the world, turning matchmaking into the central mechanic rather than treating romance as a secondary diversion. The structure alternates between missions at night and dates during the day. Heroes are sent on deliberately ridiculous assignments, and keeping them healthy matters because an injured character may be unable to participate in the following social activities. This provides a simple connection between the superhero premise and the relationship system. During dates, the emphasis shifts toward conversations, personality clashes, emotional development, and selecting appropriate responses. These mechanics are straightforward, but they effectively keep the story interactive without distracting from its character-driven focus. One of its best qualities is the flexibility of the matchmaking system. Any of the five heroes can be paired with another, giving players considerable freedom to explore different personalities and discover how their chemistry changes depending on the combination. More importantly, the story does not suggest that romance is the only meaningful form of affection. Certain pairings can succeed through friendship and platonic love, while the overall presentation is explicitly LGBTQ+ friendly. Every possible pairing can achieve a happy ending, with an additional ultimate conclusion providing an incentive for players who want to explore the game more thoroughly. Writing is responsible for much of the entertainment. With a script exceeding 100,000 words, there is a surprisingly substantial amount of material for a completely free experience. The dialogue combines emotional conversations with puns, deliberately cheesy humor, superhero absurdity, romantic comedy, and familiar relationship tropes. The writing knows that its basic premise is inherently playful and enthusiastically embraces that quality. Some jokes may be too corny for players who prefer restrained humor, but the cheerful tone gives the experience a recognizable personality. The absence of voice acting places even greater importance on the written dialogue and artwork. Characters have to establish their personalities through their conversations, expressions, and interactions rather than vocal performances. The colorful and cute visual direction works well with the optimistic nature of the story, although anyone expecting elaborate animation or cinematic superhero sequences should adjust expectations. This is fundamentally a reading-heavy experience, and its superhero theme serves the narrative more than it serves traditional action gameplay. Replayability is another major strength because exploring different hero combinations produces different relationship dynamics and endings. The developers wisely recognized that repeating identical missions could become tedious, so previously completed missions can be skipped while still providing the necessary credit. This significantly improves subsequent playthroughs by allowing players to reach unexplored conversations and dates more efficiently. The inclusion of 33 Steam achievements also provides an additional completionist incentive, particularly for anyone determined to experience the full range of pairings. Its greatest weakness is that the mechanics surrounding the narrative remain relatively lightweight. Missions provide context and influence the dating portion, but players looking for deep tactical superhero battles are unlikely to find what they want. Likewise, knowing that every pairing can eventually receive a happy conclusion removes much of the anxiety normally associated with branching visual novels. The reduced possibility of disastrous outcomes makes experimentation comfortable, though it can also weaken dramatic tension. Whether this is a flaw largely depends on whether the player wants a relaxing romantic comedy or a more demanding choice-and-consequence experience. The free-to-play designation is particularly noteworthy because the Steam description emphasizes that the game is genuinely free rather than being designed around microtransactions. Combined with its extensive script, numerous pairings, alternate romantic and platonic relationships, achievements, and replay conveniences, it offers an impressive amount of content without requiring additional purchases. That generosity makes its relatively simple mechanics easier to accept, since the main attraction has always been its characters and writing rather than mechanical complexity. Steam Deck compatibility requires more caution. The Steam store page does not currently present an official Valve Steam Deck compatibility rating for the title. Because it is a relatively straightforward visual novel built around reading, dialogue choices, and simple interactions, it may be possible to run it through Steam Deck’s compatibility environment, but this should not be confused with official verification. Players interested specifically in handheld play should therefore expect that controls, text presentation, or other aspects could require adjustment rather than assuming a completely verified experience. Ultimately, this is an appealing example of how a familiar genre can become interesting simply by changing its priorities. Instead of concentrating on villains, destruction, and complicated combat systems, it asks which heroes work well together and whether their growing relationship can become powerful enough to make a difference. Its combination of humor, inclusive matchmaking, substantial writing, charming artwork, friendship options, and accessible structure makes it especially suitable for visual novel and dating-sim fans. The mechanical side is modest and the consistently upbeat outcomes reduce tension, but its warmth and flexibility give it considerable charm. Rating: 8/10
